Could you give up booze if you wanted to?

I've been on antibiotics for the past week and have therefore stopped drinking. I've never been a huge drinker, and I rarely get drunk, but I do have drink (a bottle of beer, a couple of glasses of wine) pretty much every day, and I thought this week was going to really piss me off.

However, I've barely missed it at all. I was planning to get trashed tomorrow in celebration, but now I'm not sure if it's worth it...

Anyone here ever given up the demon drink? Could you?

  • no

    i tried

    • yeah

but it'd have to be replaced by something else

    • I've never tried

but I really think I could if I wanted to.

  • no i dont think so

i like getting drunk.i dont care how silly that sounds

    • That sounds so silly

I visualised you donning a clown outfit before hitting "post reply".

  • I did it for 40 days once.

It wasn't particularly hard. Just, y'know, have a different drink when you go out.

  • Yes

I could do anything if I wanted to.

    ANYTHING

  • I don't really touch a drop mon to thus

I don't drink much at all really so yeh I think if I was told I couldn't drink again I'd get over it.
    Besides, there's always crack.

  • if i wanted to, then yes.

I don't have the desire to do so, however, so no.

    • ^^^this.

I went off booze for a month a year or so ago, it was really difficult but I like a drink/drinks.

  • Yes

I've done it before, for about a year

  • Yes- though I'm not sure for how long!

I did so last year for a couple of weeks.

  • Yes

So much will power I keep it in stores
I've even got it coming out of my pores
Your father, your mother, your sister, your brother
Everyone's got to be an AKA lover

    • Give us the motivation we can cause a sensation!

  • Yep

have done it in the past. It's pretty easy.

  • unlikely

unless i cut out all the stressful bits of my life, but those are.. y'know.. the fun bits.

  • yes but

that would mean I couldn't be around drunk people otherwise I just get really uptight and pissed off with them.

    • ^ the worst part of giving up drink

  • I've had to sack it off

for periods of time when I've been on antibiotics and didn't miss it all that much, but I don't think I could give up completely. I certainly wouldn't want to. Er, unless it was life-threatening of course.

  • no wayz I'm alwayss drunk lol

  • I'm not sure I'd want to

If I had to though I expect I could/would stop.

  • p.s You can drink on all antibiotics

    Apart from one...

    • A friend told me this,

but considering they didn't know which one, and the doctor when prescribing them told me I should stop drinking for the duration, I figured it was better safe than sorry. It is a a little known tip though.

      • I could tell you if I could remember the name

Doctors say you shouldn't drink on any. They say you can't on one

        • metronidazole

It is the one they tell you not to drink for three days after as well.

          • ^ this

i ignored my doctor's advice cause someone told me you can drink on antibiotics and it was bollocks that you couldn't. never felt so ill in my entire life. not recommended at all.

  • No, I really don't think I could.

There are many things I can motivate myself to do but this isn't one of them.

I've always enjoyed drinking, ever since I was 13. At one point it got very out of control, I'm glad I sorted myself out and didn't have to go tee-total to prevent it happenng again.

  • I'd like to think I could

I tried detoxing for a month, and then decided a month was too long so I endavoured to give up for two weeks. It lasted 2 days. Try going to a pub with all your friends and not drinking, it's tough.

  • I've just had a week and a bit without booze

    It didn't really bother me.

  • I started driving to have an excuse not to drink socially

    So the answer is yes.

  • yeah, easy peasy

  • You'd hope so, wouldn't you

otherwise you're probably addicted. Drugs are bad, mmmmkay?

  • I tried

unfortunately I tried over the month of my birthday and so failed miserably.

  • yep

have done before, just need to find other ways of alleviating the unending tragedy of life during the period of abstinence.

  • Yes

Anything that doesn't have severe physical withdrawal symptoms is easy to give up if you have even an ounce of motivation and self-control.

I gave up smoking, drugging and drinking in the space of a couple of months a few years ago and now drink sometimes. I can take it or leave it now, but I used to love it.

Those who honestly believe they probably couldn't do it are alcoholics.

    • Really, even if you have your drinking under control?

I can go for weeks without drinking but I still think I'd find it almost impossible to give up altogether.

      • Yes

The motivation point is the key. If you have the motivation to give up (for whatever reason) and you can't then you're addicted. End of story. That's how addiction works.

  • very easily, yep

  • I could do it

    but have no inclination to.

  • Yeah, I basically have

    Certainly given up getting drunk.

  • yes

  • I did it for 6 weeks last year

and I'm a very heavy drinker. I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would though it didn't take long to fall back into old habits.

Mainly because people tend to not trust you if you're tee-total. I got annoyed by it at first, but after a little while getting preachy I just couldn't be bothered so fell right back into the mould.

    • "Mainly because people tend to not trust you if you're tee-total."

      Wut? I haven't found this.

      • Once I start recalling things that happened the night before

It didn't go down too well. I guess being new to it was interpreted by others as a naive aura of smugness. Then again I may have just been being paranoid.

  • Yeah

Just takes a little willpower to start with (telling people to fuck off and stop buying you pints) and then it's pretty easy. I did about 4 months entirely teetotal in 2005 (before London Marathon).

  • yes

    easily.

  • I had to for two months last year

As I broke my liver by falling down the stairs.

It wasn't too bad, except I had a few pints halfway through for my birthday. Which shouldn't really count, they aren't real beers.

I could do it if I wanted to. But I don't want to. Ask me when I'm hungover.

  • Probably could if I wanted to.

But then I don't really want to.

  • ive not drunk alcohol for nearly 3 weeks

being a student thats fairly good going.havent found it too bad really

  • i just recently, gave it up for over a month.

i felt great for it too!

  • I'm going to say yes

    but that might be optimistic.

  • yes

I gave up for about a year and a half once, it was easy and fine.

I don't drink that much really anyway I guess.

  • how many prescription drugs do i have?

  • Yes

    actually. No.

  • i don't think i could do it

maybe if i NEEDED to give up booze, then yes.

i've cut down on my drinking though, drastically. only 1-2 nights a week of mild drunkeness. compared to most nights.

  • Yeah.

    Quite easily.

  • I've never been a massive drinker

so no problem. When i do have a drink it's usually a pint, a bottle of wine at the max. I don't think i've had booze in about 2 months. Probably won't for the next. I feel better and i have more money. Win win.

    • i've tried to curb my drinking so many times in the past few months.

      so far, none have worked.

  • I have.

    Three months dry and counting.

  • no

I can't imagine being sociable without it, even though I'm sure I've managed at times.

  • i just got home,

sat down, opened a beer and read this thread. thought i should share that.

  • Yes.

    Easy.

  • no problem at all

i like a couple of drinks on a night out but i'm not really a fan of being probably drunk so i think i'd hardly miss it at all.
