CULT OF LUNA - where to start?

Following a link from this site into the unknown (well, Youtube)I was blown away by Cult of Luna's 'Leave me here' -huge slabs of screaming noise but with all that post-rock goodness packed inside - but where do I start with their discography? The salvation album?

  • The Beyond

It's less 'post rock' than Salvation and more in Isis territory, but a fucking good album none the less. Buy it!

    • The Beyond eh?

cheers - like Isis a lot so this is sounding promising

      • ...

I second The Beyond. The first (second) track is the heaviest shit ever.

its heavy, but not the heaviest shit ever.

          • ...

Maybe I exagerrate a little bit. Though I guess it depends on how it comes across: Low quality through PC speakers on Youtube is kinda heavy. Having the band lined up in a row right in front of you at the Mean Fiddler is another thing entirely. Heaviest shit ever?

            • nah

i bet they are immense live though.
ISIS in a room that holds less than a hundred people four/five years ago=heaviest shit ever.

              that or Cephalic Carnage.

  • hooray

    i won!

    salvation is my favourite yes

  • just make sure you get

somewhere along the highway, comfortably one of my favourite records ever! and the new one is good too, but not as good as that or salvation really..

  • the self titled album

    :D

  • One of my top 5 bands

So nice to see that every album has been nominated now :o)

Beyond and Salvation are both stunning, Beyond is more immediately accessible but salvation has more tunes that will grow on you like a mofo. The self titled and Somewhere along the highway are both a bit patchy but ThirtyFour & Dim are two of the best tracks ever and totally justify the purchase of Somewhere...

The new album is out on the 16th and is a belter - the title track is up on their myspace.

    In short: buy them all!!

  • i too was blown away by Leave Me Here

when I first saw it on a free Metal Hammer DVD but I was a little disappointed by all the songs on Salvation all doing basically the same 'meandering post-rocky bit...metal...meander...METAL' thing.
I've heard some great stuff from their other albums but this is the only one I own.

  • I thought/hoped

you were going to be asking about how to get to grips with Luna's fanbase.

  • I prefer COL to ISIS

Usually get slated for this, but for me, there is no comparison.

You've got to see CoL live too, immense stuff, almost as good as Envy!

  • New album is pretty good

and I've only heard The Beyond before that. I need to hear more of them really, they're right up my street.

  • First album for sure.

Scala on 1st of July. Better than Isis for sure.
