CSS' second album: a first listen

css

First thoughts are in on Brazilian wunderkinds CSS' sophomore release Donkey, due for release in July on Sub Pop.

Writing on DiS' 'sister' website (I think that's what we're calling it now) thequietus.com, eminent pop critic John Doran gives a worrying indication of where we're heading here: "On first listen (and perhaps this is not helped by the negative connotations of the title) it doesn’t make for very impactful listening at all.

"There is no intro as bewitching and bewildering as ‘CSS Suxxx’, no obvious massive chart smash and nothing as unhinged and laugh-out-loud funny as ‘Meeting Paris Hilton’."

Speculating as to why quality levels might have taken a bit of a dip, Doran muses: "Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Warners are distributing this for Sub Pop which means that all of the rough edges have been smoothed off."

A ray of hope? Oh go on then: "This said after several more listens it proves to be something of a slow burner."

Among highlights on the record Doran picks out lead single 'Rat Is Dead (Rage)' ("...more than a hint of the Bossanova era Pixies of it"), 'Reggae All Night' ("harks back to the debut in style at least with hyper kinetic ‘Burning Down The House’ keyboard stabs and Chicago house keyboard line") and 'More' ("The best song on the album... a real Trevor Horn slick take on the Tom Tom Club").

  • "Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Warners are distributing this for Sub Pop which m

Sub Pop has been part-owned by Warners since the 1990s. their records are distributed by the ADA in North America, which is a company owned by Sub Pop and Warners in a 5%/95% split. this comment is nonsense.

    • ooo bitch

      • their new song is crap tho

      • not really

        it's just poor quality journalism.

    • yeah

ignoring the fact that sub pop would never let that their records be "smoothed over", i think anyone with half a brain at warners (which is, surprisingly, most of them) would also balk at such a thing.

imo the first css record was a big pile of shit with maybe two or three sparkling songs (we all know which ones) buried underneath, so it's not much surprise that their second effort isn't overwhelming.

      • "balking"

in relation to css, i mean.... obviously i don't mean that warners have never interefered with other bands.

  • I'm not expecting much from this

would be nice to be surprised though.

  • Good riddance to incessant UK touring

    • WTF?

I didn't say that Warners have only just started distributing Sub Pop.

But quite clearly, someone somewhere, perhaps in the band, perhaps at the label level, has said 'We can have a massive hit if smooth this down a lot.' And it has back fired.

This is all I have speculated on - you may disagree if you like, it doesn't bother me.

      • i didn't debate with you; i made an isolated comment

      • i wasn't suggesting you were

but you are suggesting not only some kind of nerfarious involvement on the part of Warners but also that they weren't heavily involved with the release of the first LP. which they were.

        • John Doran in "aging punk" shocker?

          • I was five years old when punk broke

            you fucking ninny.

  • 3rd album will be even worse

now the blokes left, and he pretty much wrote all the music and lyrics.

I have to agree that it's pretty 'meh', it doesn't seem as 'fun' anymore.

    • The bloke hasn't left

It's the enigmatic Ira who's departed.

      • yeah

        and they gained Jon Brando

    • Eh?

      The bloke didn't leave!

  • CSS in duff album shocker!

    ;-P

  • CSS in duff album shocker!

    ;-P

    • that comment really is stupidly "oh Im so indie, fuck the majors!" sounding

why would they want to smooth the edges anyway? The last album did really well and they're selling out Brixton academy and stuff, no? Plus it's not like they're TNV or something.

  • I wonder

If it'll take an RAC remix to make me like a song off THIS one?

  • Why does he have to compare everything to everything?

Sounds like this doing this or the so and so era of whatsitcalled.

It reads like the NME having a turd and then wiping its bottom with DiS?

    • wrightylew

you are the turd that NME had. Sometimes I pray that one day you will be wiped from DiS, but then I realise that you're a necessary evil here. Like a chlamydia umbrella or a traffic warden.
