Please?
Currently I like *shels, and the song 'Friend Of The Night' by Mogwai. But I want to listen to some more post-rock.
So, suggestions?

God is an Astronaut
"Far from Refuge" is my favourite track. See their page on last.fm: there are some free full lengthers on there.
Also try Mono (the Japanese band, otherwise you might end up with some lounge music). Explosions in the Sky.
Good luck. This genre is strangely addictive.
- Andrew
mono are indeed excellent
Mono are amazing
I'd also recommend Dirty Three wholeheartedly, maybe not "post-rock" as such but stunning instrumental music.
The first Set Fire to Flames album is gorgeous, and Hanged Up can do great things with just drums and cello.
spiderland by Slint
I can't stop playing this at the moment..... not strictly post rock, but one of the bands charged with crafting the genre.
I'll do the obvious ones...
someone with imagination can suggest some others....
Mogwai - Young team, Come on die young
Slint - Spiderland
Godspeed you black emperor - lift your skinny fists, FA infinity
Silver Mount zion - he has left us alone....
Explosions in the sky - how strange innocence, the earth is not a cold dead place,
and a couple of token gesture newbies....Yndi halda and Vessels.
enjoy
You missed out..
65daysofstatic - one time for all time
Sigur Ros - ()
They're pretty obvious. ;)
65days?
I wouldn't class 65daysofstatic as obvious.
I really don't rate them at all.
But sigur ros are epic
Jaga Jazzist - What We Must
erm, wins.
This will destroy you
do make say think
rumah sakit
russian circles (post metal)
this will destroy you are pretty boring though dont ya think?
nah i don't think so, sure there like explosions in the sky
but they're still worthy of holding the tag that they're the new explosions in the sky.
i just think its a bit dot to dot and not very adventurous
Actually you're both right.
The first TWDY effort 'Young Mountain' was solid post rock if a little dull. Their S/T album is much better and more dynmaic.
I found it was the other way round.
Young Mountain tried a bit of everything and very much succeeded in my opinion. I just find with their S/T they don't take things far enough and the songs can verge towards dull. I still like the album, but I found it quite disappointing after the brilliance of their EP.
But S/T uses electronics and gets
a kind of 65dos sound in places whereas Young Mountain takes its entire sound pallate from EITS surely?
Different strokes for different folks I suppose.
What about on 'Grandfather Clock'?
That uses electronic sounds and gets a bit 65dos. This is what I mean, on Young Mountain it seems to me that they tested the water a bit and experimented with different sounds on different songs, like the building repetition of 'Quiet' or the crescendo-type EitS song that 'The World is Our ____' turns into, but along the way made a very strong record.
I think they do this a bit on S/T, but not as much. I still like the debut a lot though.
EITS are better
what a valid arguement
^I agree
try some isis, if you are in the mood for something heavy
'oceanic' or 'in the absense of truth' (which i'm listening to right now) are the best probably
...
The For Carnation - S/T
Panopticon is the best shirley?
The other two are quality, one more brutal one more intricate (drums on absence are acness) but I think panopticon (In Fiction in particular) has been the high point so far.
Ex-Girl
Post-Rock
Hi try upcdownc they are a good post-rock band
world end's girlfriend
oh and
kyte
www.myspace.com/kyteband
i think
I recommend Kyte, I saw these supporting...
iLIKETRAINS, who must surely count as post rock. Go for terra nova, the beeching report, voice of reason and death of an ideallist.
World's End Girlfriend
is/are excellent. I was dithering as to whether I'd call him (and his percussionist) post-rock or not. I hate this genre-definition nonsense. I'm also an idiot for not mentioning 65daysofstatic, and no-one has mentioned Red Sparowes yet.
^Red Sparowes are most excellent.
They certainly are
I am rather excited that I have a ticket to see them in Sheffield in July!
^
indeed they are.... in bristol soon as well...
Let airplanes circle overhead
you might find their S/T album hard to get hold of but it is well worth it. NO samples, no vocals, nothing but stripped back and energetic epic instrumental punk. Superb. Get it.
try
a genuine freakshow, caspian, and so i watch you from a far, red paper dragon, Do make say think, glissando, maybe she will, and perhaps my band ' flies are spies from hell'

I got 'Palmless Prayer/Mass Murder Refrain' by mono & world's end girlfriend.. thats two awesome post rock bands for the price of one!
oh and its really good.
Don't Mess With Texas
They're from somewhere in Eastern Europe, but very awesome.
I think you need a 1st class stamp to Post-Rock
I hope this helps.
Her Name is Calla
The Heritage is out in two weeks!
The first
Six By Seven album was quite post rock, and sounded good in 1998 at least.
I don't want to argue about what is and isn't post rock but...
Six By Seven are just indie rock.
fairly progressive indie rock though
I can see why people who like one would like t'other
Most stuff on
Constellation Records
World's End Girlfriend is/are incredible!
Explosions in the Sky/Sigur Ros are probably the best places to start though
the recent reissue of...
mogwai's young team is well worth picking up if you've not got it. good stuff.
Followed by Ghosts
are an excellent post rock band that sound kind of similar to EITS and they are giving their new album away for free!
Well, they leaked it before someone else did. If you can call that free...
Unwed Sailor, c'mon...
...post-rock for the sweet-toothed. Brand new album Little Wars can be checked out in full here:
http://www.virb.com/unwedsailor
Good calls...
... on Her Name Is Calla and Vessels.
Perhaps not strictly post-rock, but iLiKETRAiNS are excellent live if rather dull on record. What about Oceansize? How would people classify Sigur Ros - glacial Icelandic pop?
Yndi Halda and Vessels
are the two best 'newcomers' in the UK at the moment.
Kaneda
Are pretty cool www.myspace.com/soundsofkaneda post rock with a bite
otherwise
You may Die In The Desert
Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson
The Site of Future Rome
The Pirate Ship Quintet - particularly I Kina Spiser De Hund possbily the heaviest post rock track I've heard
They Don't Sleep
To Be A High Powered Executive
Tracer AMC
Pelican - More on the Post-Metal side of things but instrumental
The Ascent of Everest
Grails
One of the few bands still keeping the genre fresh.
JAG!

And for the sake of
recommending bands closer to (my) home:
CAPGUNS
www.myspace.com/capgunsband
JOHNNY HORIZONTAL
www.myspace.com/johnnyhorizontal
Omega Massif
are a little know German post-rock/instrumental outfit, who put out a stellar LP last year. Check it out if you can find it.
Codes in the Clouds
www.myspace.com/codesintheclouds
Just discovered these guys, defo worth a listen!
howsabout....
Ben Hur - Bitch Magnet.
completely brilliant and absolutely mint live.
No one has said iLiKETRAiNS
So I'll say them...iLiKETRAiNS
Also, mucho plaudits to This Will Destroy You and Sennen, both of whom have released killer albums this year.
Rosetta
Galilean Sattelites is an awesome album, more on the metal side in terms of the vocals but the music is more ambient - it works!
Otherwise check out Tides, the utterly ace You Slut!, Youthmovies, Manatees, Latitudes...
GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLS
The Youth Movies EP
'Hurrah! Another year, surely this title will end soon' is one of my favourites. I much prefer it to their new one although I have listened to it a hell of a lot more.
El Ten Eleven
i don'[t think i know what post rock is
but try these anyway....
Oceansize
Biffy Clyro
Reuben
Million Dead
Hell is for Heroes
Aereogramme
Amplifier
"i don'[t think i know what post rock is"
No, you don't.
I haven't heard of Hell Is For Heroes for like seven years!
wow 7 years?
you must have been just out of nappies by then right?
by the way, post rock has been around a lot longer than you think mr smartarse.
Like Nu-metal is defined by Linkin Park, sure they're old now but they still define the genre ;-)
essential post-rock
i would say that the following are essential starting points for post rock investigations;
talk talk - spirit of eden
mogwai - young team
slint - spiderland
gastr del sol - camofleur
explosions in the sky - how strange innocence
i forgot...
bark psychosis - hex
my favourite album
and i like Aerial, maybe a bit too explosions sometimes but i like them.
and
tortoise - millions now living will never die
Talk Talk
indeed.
I think I'm pushing the boat out posting in a post rock thread but since peeps have said Sigur Ros and Silver Mt. Zion I think you should check out
Held By Hands
I wouldn't call
Spirit of Eden 'post rock' in the slightest.
Talk Talk
Yes yes yes! Listening to this is like watching a new life form emerging from the primeval ooze of 80s pop, knowing that in time it's going to shed its vocal cords and evolve into something rather magnificent.
you don't make sense
Original poster here!
I've checked out almost all the bands you've posted (except the JAGs, I'll get round to them) and thanks very much to whichever ones of you recommended:
God Is An Astronaut
Vessels
This Will Destroy You
Red Sparowes
and El Ten Eleven
you've introduced me to some great bands. Any more suggestions?
.
do make say think > all
good call ^
i love that band a great deal..
www.thesilentballet.com
is good for instrumental music, only webzine that covers it extensively.
If you're new to the genre check out the free compilations they have, good stuff.
As for bands:
Caspian (best post-rock band going)
Gifts From Enola
Pg Lost
Maps
Aerial
Mouth of the Architect (post-rock meets metal)
Te
Foxhole
Giants
for FREE post-rock...
check out the Lost Children Net Label
http://lostchildrennetlabel.wordpress.com/releases/
loads of albums/EPs for free download.
Oh yeah, that's brilliant too
French Teen Idol, Loss of a Child, Double Handsome Dragons and Roncatto Braathen would be my picks from them.
Flies Are Spies From Hell
Brilliant name, brilliant live.
so
we got this far in another one of these threads and only one argument as to what is and isn't post-rock.
Come on peeps where's the hatred and vitriol?
^ Post-Cock
Is that going to be enough to get something going? SAFETY WINK
