Have you guys noticed how much indie is creeping into the mainstream? I swear that's a Papercuts, or maybe Ruby Suns song on this one car commercial... anyway, still it's people like Usher who sell records. Have you heard Usher? After years of seeing this smug motherfucker on entertainment tv shows, I finally heard a tune and it was exactly as crapola as I knew it'd be.
Still not Celine Dion loathsome, but close enough.
Most Detested Mainstream Acts Which Aren't Coldplay!
PS. Can't be arsed to start a new thread.... on a scale of 1 - 10, the effort I should make to see Swervedriver tonight?

Yeah rules
Pop Ya Collar rules
Love in this Club droolz
Oooh, look at how cool and leftfield I am.
Look at all these bands that uncool people like! Look how rubbish they are! scoffscoffscoff.
.
"Love In This Club" is shite, though.
Fergie is the worst ever
she makes Celine look like Janis Joplin
i don't think that
love in this club is that bad, but i was expecting something stellar from him y'know? I always considered him and justin to be kind of like a modern day prince and michael jackson. so yeah, i was expecting him to step it up alittle, considering how good futuresex/lovesound was. I guess confessions is the best we're gonna get...
Modern day Prince and Michael Jackson...
WTF?
Everything Usher does is complete shit
everyone you do is complete shit
Hence me bumming you last night
You're an idiot
'crapola'
I don't have anything against Usher, I just think you're a bellend for (once again) thinking there's a difference between mainstream and music in general, which there isn't.
that's a point
johnwiddop. as i stated, prince and michael jackson. probably the most mainstream you could possibly get. is anyone going to argue that thriller or purple fucking rain are worthless and throwaway? You'd have to be a total asshole.
wtf
at what point did he say usher was bad because he was mainstream. he just said he was bad and mainstream. dont confuse the two.
I also wasn't referring to his point
I'm referring the to the title of the original post. I get really annoyed with people who say 'mainstream' or 'that's a good pop song' or 'girls aloud are a good pop band', and I just people would think about things as a whole picture. If someone said "who's your favourite obscure band" or "who's your favourite non-mainstream band" they'd get shouted down.
umm i dont think they would
its only that in this context it would seem odd, because this is a community which almost exclusively discusses non-mainstream music. imagine using a forum which only discusses the top 40. discussing your favourite obscure bands would be a break from usual discourse, and the "obscure" would therefore be a necessary disclaimer.
using mainstream as a descriptive is totally viable, because usher et al are palpably "mainstream", in the same way that a band like half man half biscuit or wolf eyes are palpably non-mainstream. effectively, its tantamount to asking who your favourite new band is.
incidentally check out those vertical "dis"es
this website is indoctrinating me
I'm not saying it's not a viable description
I just wish people wouldn't do it!
Go see Swervedriver !
Really !
They're ace :!
As for Most Detested Mainstream Acts Which Aren't Coldplay! : it's easy... Keane !
Scouting for Girls
END OF THREAD
swervedriver
are the suckiest mainstream act
Girls Aloud
Simple
wrong
cracking pop tunes
Oh dear...
Someone's being reading one too many "critics" opinions.
no
I just like dancing to them when drunk :(
even though they irritate the hell out of me
they (or whoever writes for them) are damn good at making catchy poppy songs. of that there is no doubt.
Catchy doesn't always mean good
it does for record sales
anyway i didnt say catchy means good, it normally means annoying get the hell out of my head (like i said - they irritate the hell out of me)
So do Scouting For Girls
It means nothing. Virtually all of the top 40 is full of catchy songs that constantly stay in your head no matter how annoyingly shit they are.
A good mainstream pop/indie song
The new Mystery Jets one.
And Black Kids two singles (even though it is Cure-lite).
I love 'em.
Nothing wrong with a bit of good pop.
