Funny buggers. Fall play single song gig

mark e smith the fall

Last night (May 29), veritable genius / mardy old bastard, Mark E Smith, AKA The Fall played a single track to an invited audience at Bloomberg SPACE, in Finsbury Square, London.

The track was ‘Blindness’ and appeared in extended form as part of a Fall exhibition of paintings and things like that by Stefan Bruggeman and Dr Atl.

Essential Friday news.

Did anyone go? Let us know if it was any good, why don’tcha?

  • Oh dear

Sounds a bit wanky to me.

    Sort it out, Mark.

    • Was going to go

but it sounded pretentious beyond belief so we gave it a miss.

  • I've never really got(ten into) The Fall

Where should I start, and should I bother?

I've had a complete lack of exposure to them, and that grumpy old cunt Smith has never really appealed to my 4/4-loving self.

    • Nearly two and a half days later

And no replies to this. I therefore conclude that they're fucking awful (until someone proves otherwise).

      • peel sessions box set

= all you need if you've got a spare 20 quid

  • I got an invite to this

but gave it to my Dad. Basically sums up how I feel about this event.

  • He's almost as aesthetically displeasing

at that indescribable creature from The Enemy. Isn't Mark E Smith in Von Sudenfed? Everything's neutral then.

    • I went last night...

my girlfriend got me in as her guest as she was going to the private view anyway.....
i am a fall fan and only knew on the day before that they were due to play...
the invite stated that the fall were due to play 'blindness' at 7.30pm, i intially thought it was a wind-up (why play only one song?)....
once inside the bloomberg (posh banking office in finsbury square, near moorgate tube), the ground floor holds the exhibition space and then on the lower ground floor was the area where a stage was set up for the (mighty) fall to play....so no wind-up....
the band without mark went on stage at 8pm and started to play 'i've been duped' off the new 'imperial wax solvent' album - half-way through the song, a slightly dishevelled looking (probably pissed) mark e smith took to the stage as well.
then came 'white lightning' which sounded fantastic and finally 'blindness' which lasted longer than it's usual 7 or so minutes, mark needing lyric sheets to begin with, but were soon swiftly discarded.......
it was an odd gig of sorts - the band were presumably asked to play, as part of the exhibition is a tv installation of the fall live (with no sound!) - and they looked thoroughly bored in doing it, particularly elana....
quite why they did it was probably down to getting a hefty appearance fee and the crowd that were there (bar a few) were definitely not fall fans and looked more than a little bemused at the sight of the band.......
so, in short, odd gig, three songs played to an art crowd and mark and the band back in beer tokens for a few weeks....!

      • oh, and...

having just re-read the DiS news piece on this, the exhibition, bar the tv installation, has nothing to do with the fall, so fall fans - no need to go and have a look at it!
it's just paintings of mexican landscapes and some 'modern art' works....
quite why the tv installation of the fall is there is beyond me, but then i am no 'modern art' fan......
        answers on a postcard please......

      • Sounds brilliant

        XD

  • Just one song,

    but WHAT a song.
