Is it selfish being in a band?

Personally I like making music, I love playing live and it's the main reason I do it but..... and this is my point; why should I? Or anybody for that matter?
There are so many average bands saturating the market surely they should just give it up and quit :P not that the music I make is ground breaking but how many times have you played on a bill with bands or been to see them, that just shouldn't exist?
I don't want to stifle creativity but some people need to be told straight that they suck and/or be culled. Particularly bands that use flying V's. If a band comes on and the singer sounds like the guy from Nickleback going on about the wind in his hair then they should do the world a favour and quit.

  • haha...

I see your point, but you wouldn't stop someone from pursuing a different hobby, such as painting would you?

"stop painting you douche, you fucking SUCK!".

    • yeah, but

if a painter is crap their paintings generally won't get displayed anywhere. whereas if a band is crap they will probably at least be able to bag small local gigs or support slots. so i suppose it could be argued that someone just arsing around with their mates, knowing full well that the bland old shite they are playing has been done a million times better a million times before, is taking up valuable time that the audience could have spent watching someone good or interesting.

      • Like Van Gogh you mean?

So who's to be the arbiter of all this then? Maybe the government could set up a department.

Personally I'd like to see a cull of crap, ill thought out and timewasting threads.

  • If I'm honest I genuinely believe there are too many bands in the world.

And that most bands are pretty mediocre.

Which doesn't necessarily mean people shouldn't do it if they enjoy it but I do feel people who are in mediocre bands should just play for the enjoyment and not worry so much about "making it". I think part of the problem with things like Myspace is that it means everyone can get music out there which is fine itself but not everyone's music is really worth hearing...

Obviously I'm in a band myself and probably hope to end up making it the thing I make my full-time living out of (or at least the bulk of my full-time living). I suppose I just have to hope my band are good enough for this not to make me a hypocrite for the above paragraph...

    • post a myspace link

...in hope of some delicious irony.

  • Average

200X bands in saturating market shock?

  • :)

'Songs are just something to waste your time,
So is everything else so do whatever makes you feel Fine'

    • :D

'If you feel like singing a song,
and the whole world's singing along,
just rememeber what was yours is everyone's from now on'

    • -

Anyone who thinks my band sucks should give up listening to music.

      • To me it's like other way round

I feel selfish that music has given me so much pleasure but what have I created? Wella ctually have done quite a few tapes but ages ago but feel should stop being lazy and get recording but I'd rather listen to stuff

  • Yeah, everyone has the right to be in a band

It's people who give record deals and PR money to mediocre or bad bands who are selfish. I can endure the dross at small gigs and sharing a stage (because we'll always sound better), but not when it's flying at me from the radio/TV/press/nightmares.

...And don't diss the Flying V. At least you're unlikely to hear any blandly strummed, jangly shite coming out of it. Les Pauls and Telecasters are far more likely to be sersiously abused!

  • I feel like this sometimes

but then i remind myself that its only music and its not that important and its silly to waste time and energy on bands you don't like.

plus its all about opinion. I'm sure the guy from nickelback gets letters every day telling him that 'this is how you remind me' stopped someone from killing themselves or something.

ultimately if you are watching or listening to a band you don't like than you should go and do something else, its not up to them to change to suit you.

  • i feel selfish making friends pay

£6 to see my band whenever we're playing with a bunch of crappers at crap venues on the other side of town. But when we're playing on good bills i feel like I'm doing a public service.

    • Some bands get better

over time. The 1st time you see them, they're all over the place, but they get the hang of performing and writing after a while and really come into their own. But I do think it's a load of rubbish when crap bands get signed in favour of real talent

  • It would be a bind if there was an I in band

(you know, in place of the 'a' like)

  • I get the point you're making

but many people enjoy the music that others would call shite. And anyway, let crappy indie kids make all the music they want, it stops them from being on the street drinking white ace by the gallon :P

And as for the flying V comment. Dont diss them, I have a flying V bass and it looks and plays extremely well
