So we had this before and it brought unto me a rather plentiful amount of great CDs.
The rules are: albums that are CHEAP (let's say 1.50 or less, not incl. p+p) and are more worthy than 5/10 mediocrity. Links and loose descriptions also help.
The first one is Brian Wilson's 'Smile'
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0002LI11M/ref=sr_1_olp_2?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1211963027&sr=8-2
Gold Chains - Young Miss America
experimental, dancey hip-hop a la SpankRock
50p + postage
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B00008DCD4/ref=sr_1_olp_1?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1211963792&sr=8-1
Good
albums. Both of those
care to recommend some more?
People gave some SUPERB contributions last time
Well...
The second Portishead album is only £2.98, and is vastly underrated:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B000003TSP/ref=sr_1_olp_8?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1211964771&sr=1-8
And the best British record of recent years (in my opinion), The closer you get by Six by seven is £1.98:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B000040OV6/ref=sr_1_olp_23?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1211964853&sr=1-23
good call with Portishead.
I'll investigate Six by Seven later on and see if i care to put my feet in the water.
i think they have...
the portishead 'roseland nyc' live album for cheapness too. that is also well worth checking out. maybe my favourite live album ever.
yes, they do!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roseland-NYC-Live-Portishead/dp/B00000DLV1/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1211965442&sr=8-4
£2.98 is a right bargain.
The Six By Seven
record is superb, get it!
sounds like....?
(well this sounds like we're playing charades)
It came out
at the same time as lots of great loud stuff - QOTSA, Trail of Dead, Idlewild, XTRMNTR, ATRiot etc but its like a cross between controlled anger, full on rock, shoegazery type stuff (thats evolved a bit) and great songwriting.
Thats a terrible description, but it is really, REALLY awesome.
God, those were good years for music. When was the last time we had 6 rock albums that were anywhere near as good as that batch?
well written, layered, british rock
most songs slowly build up. For that price it's really worth a look, 'another love song' is amazing.
Prefer the first album, and the one after (I owe you love? It's got 'american beer' on anyway) is good also.
All 4 of their initial records
Are great. They lost it a bit after "04", but there were moments of utter genius on that too.
"The way I feel today" is 'almost' the best album of the 90's. It's so frustratingly close to being amazing...
It was so sad to see them decline
members leaving as there was no livelihood in it. Saw em three times after 'the way I feel today' was released and they never played american beer once :(
pssst - The way I feel today was released in 2002 according to wiki, are you thinking of 'the things we make'?
Really?
Blimey... No, I was thinking it came out in 1999. But then, I'm terrible with dates and years!
I think I saw them play American Beer live? Maybe? I seem to remember thinking I did anyway. But it is one of those songs that sounds like it's live on the record, so maybe I'm getting confused again?
my mate saw them play it in exeter
just before we were going to see them in leeds, and said it was one of the best songs he'd ever seen live. We were so excited :(
The only reason I knew it wasn't 90s was cos my mate at uni introduced them to me, and I only started in 2001. I'm terrible with dates an all.
However, in a move that may be a masterstroke or may be my undoing, once I've gathered all my CDs I'm going to reorder them in chronological order, should help with this kind of knowledge...
I saw them
on that tour supported by Trail of Dead and Zan Lyons. Now THAT was a good gig.
THAT gig
ROCKED! Trail of Dead... trashed the stage... and Six by Seven tore it up again!
The early 2000s were a good time.
There doesn't seem to be as much rock at the moment, you really have to look for it. Too much stuff sounds like phone adverts or the Foals.
6 x 7
You need to own The Closer You Get... An amazing album! Then follow it up with The Things We Make, 'Candlelight' and '88-92-96'... which is £1.11! Get it now!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Things-We-Make-Six-Seven/dp/B000024CJI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1211981012&sr=8-2
good call.
just bought the gold chains album.
Breaking my own rules, but 1.89 for SpankRock's YoYoYoYoYo
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B000EGD264/ref=sr_1_olp_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1211966713&sr=1-1
^ Ordered!
Came to £3.13 inc postage.
like L'Oreal, it's worth it
i got loud reeds transformer for 2:99
from play.com :)
^ breaking the rules by too much
But with p&p
surely a £1.50 amazon CD comes to nearly £3 anyway?
good call, i forgot play do free delivery via carrier pigeon.
3 buck play CDs also allowed
ah but my rules
state that if it's proper amazon (like the portishead ones) you can get em free on the £15 deal...
accepted but CHEAPER IS BETTER
yahwuhl
but I'm till not going above £2 for a CD (my get out clause is Volta for £5 cos it's that much in FOPP anyway, and I'm seeing Bjork in July so I NEED this record)
HAHA :D
Hey this is an Amazon thread..
..GET OUT!
Death in Vegas
The Contino Sessions
50p for good condtion or 99p for like new!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Contino-Sessions-Death-Vegas/dp/B000025A88/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1211967721&sr=1-4
what do Death in Vegas sound like?
get this CD now
layered up melodic noise (Contino sessions anyway)
listen to dirge on youtube or summit
I conur
it's got Iggy and Bobby Gilliespie on it, too
concur
even
Ack, mental image
"Hullo, I'm Bobby, and this is my wife Iggy..."
i like the amazon description,
but Bobby Gillespie and Iggy Pop don't do much (anything) for me and i saw them name-dropped
At the risk of the wrath of DiS
I'm not a huge fan of either of them normally either, but this is more about the music than the guest vocals. They actually sound fine on their respective tracks though.
For that price though, it's so worth a chance.
i'll get investigating and perhaps give it a bash
=)
1998.
:'D
Miles Davis
Kind of Blue - £1.30
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kind-Blue-Miles-Davis/dp/B000024F6G/ref=cm_lmf_tit_7_rdsssl0

Absolutely outstanding record...
wowsers!
buy buy buy
Oh blimey yes
Get it!
is this circa Satan?
I have the Satan Live single and it BLOWS MY MIND
Satan was
a live song they played around that time, and they released it as a single a bit after this record came out I think? They also rereleased In Sides with The Saint cover on it (avoid this version, it ruins the albums "flow").
The Satan singles are really cheap on Amazon too if you don't have all 3, and well worth getting for all the great B-sides and live versions.
The Box single is one of the greatest EP's ever...
What does it sound like?
here's the single from it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q25Zx6B5HJA
It sounds like
The future

Not sure, I usually only buy new ones.
The only used one I bought was Penance Soiree a while back and that worked perfectly fine.
^SNOB
just kidding i like new stuff as well
I always buy new too
the only ever used cd I bought was Perfect Pitch Black by Cave In, and it turned out it was a new copy anyway...ZINGGGGG
they state at the side
their condition, i.e.
"Used - Mint"
"Used - Good"
"Used - Acceptable" etc
Watch out for the item descriptions - very, very occasionally they'll be promo versions, so pay attention! It's the most amazing way to buy music if you hit the right deals
how acceptable is acceptable though?
the CD's still round
i never buy 'acceptable',
only 'mint', 'very good' and 'good'.
Never had one single problem, and i must've bought about 300 CDs off marketplace
^ this
I buy 90% of my music through Amazon Market Place. It's incredible

I think I'm going to end up spending a lot of money today.
But the albums are really cheap, are you buying 50?
Yes
There is a distinct possibility.
The most I've ever bought at once on Amazon is 9.
Does this meen I have good self control? :)
Maybe. I guess that depends how much those 9 cost?
I'm not normally one for buying so much at once as I end up not listening to them all properly. When they are this cheap though it's damn tempting. I think if I set myself a £15 limit I will be okay.
I think they cost about £44 without delivery.

gah
where do you go to on the site to find the cheap stuff?
'used and new'
Or just
search for an artists and then sort by Price ascending: low to high
Or even
search by category, then price low to high. Category -> CD -> CD Album -> Price Low to High.
I've been through about 200 pages of the indie category.
my eyes hurt now
you make it sound so easy
search for an artist.
On the main search page there will be many results listed. Just below the amazon price is a "USED AND NEW FROM X" price. Click this and you'll be taken to the marketplace section and before you know it - BLAM! - 50 bucks down the drain
