Shearwater, or Okkervil River?

I think Shearwater are much better than Okkervil River, but seem to get less attention. Don't get me wrong, OR are fantastic, but I think Will Sheffs songs on Shearwater's Winged Life are better than anything OR have released. As for Palo Santo and Rook, wow. Am I in a minority here?

i like shearwater too

nobody replied to my post on here a while back though.

I didn't see

that post. I'll join your club!

cool

we like shearwater and we're the hippest of the hip!

I've always meant to check them out but never got round to it

I was thinking the other night will sheff may seriously be the greatest lyricist of all time, this opinion may be fleeting

What songs are Will Sheff's on Winged Life?

I thought him and Jon Meiberg were listed as joint composers on all the tracks?

Maybe

I've got this wrong then. Certainly the songs that Will Sheff sings are amazing

Again, Will Sheff sings some of the songs on Winged Life?

I thought all the vocals were Meiberg.

Hmmm

maybe Ive got cloth ears but My Good Deed, A Makeover, Wedding Bells and others which escape me without the cd in front of me sound more like Sheff singing than Meiburg. We must bottom this out!

OK

It never occured to me that Will Sheff did the vocals on some of the tracks, I thought this was Meiberg's band. I'll have to see if I can find out.

You're completely right

Just listened to the album and it sounds like Sheff does the vocals on My Good Deed, A Makeover, Wedding Bells..., and The Convert. I don't now how the hell I didn't notice this before. Just shows I haven't listened to it enough.

and embarrassingly

I've been spelling Jonathan Meiburg's name wrong throughout this thread.

probably

i love Shearwater, but i dont think much can compare to Dont Fall in Love.. and BSB on a whole. and i have trouble taking Meiburg's voice seriously at times. But am glad to see they seem to be making it big(ger) now too.

Palo Santo is wonderful though.

They're pretty different

Okkervil are my new favourite band.

Rook is a fine album, however. I'll definitely try and catch Shearwater when they're over next.

Shearwater is really pretty

Okkervil is more poptastic but Okkervil do grate a bit after a while I feel.

Shearwater

should be over sometime in July if anyone's interested.

I'm thinking of doing an Oxford show but nobody would come so probably not...

Playing London Bush Hall

on 17th July. A possible appearance at Latitude perhaps?

Where

did you find these tour dates?

i'm a promoter

so i get to hear these things occasionally, but generally miss out on most! :-(

This:

Four Points of the Compass festival:

West = Shearwater + David Thomas Broughton + Revere @ Bush Hall in Shepherd's Bush (17 July)

North = David Thomas Broughton + The Owl Service + Directorsound @ The King's Head in Crouch End (18 July)

East = Trembling Bells + Hush Arbors + The Exploits Of Elaine + Ben Reynolds @ Cafe OTO in Dalston (19 July)

South = Liz Green + Beneath Fire And Smoke + Shady Bard + Table @ The Bedford in Balham (20 July)

8 pounds per night or 25 pounds for all four.

west looks best

cheers, might have to check it out.

Does anybody

want to do a Sheffield show? Please?

The Dissolving Room.

Will Sheff sings about half the songs on that.

If you go on the Fargo record label you can pick up some of there stuff for about 5 Euros.

i like palo santo

in fact, I like it a lot, but it doesn't make me think "holy fuck this might be the best thing I've ever heard" like so many Okkervil River songs do.

really

really liking the new shearwater...i think his voice is so much nicer than will sheff's..
sort of talk talk-ish on a few tracks!

erm

I used to prefer Okkervil River, but after the last album being wank and then seeing them live and them being wank, and then hearing how good 'Rook' is, then I've made the switch.

I agree,

the Talk Talk comparison's been made before, and I read that they've covered them for their next single. I listened to Winged Life again last night, everyone should own this album. It was my intro to the band and I love it.

shit

just seen that they're down for playing dour on the 19th, bang goes that truck appearance!

Shearwater

are awesome. Palo Santo (in my eyes) is one of the best albums from the last decade. However, Okkervil are king. BSB is seriously close to my fav album of all-time.

Is 'Rook' the new

Shearwater out now then?

Its out

next week

Nice one

Had no idea about this. Will pop along to the Bush Hall gig too.

Gigs like

these are the sole reason I wish I lived in London. Shearwater and David Thomas Broughton, beyond amazing.
