...'good' according to erm, me.

It's my friend's brother, who wants to get into more guitar music. He often comes around and asks what I'm listening to (when it's not really crap). I promised that I would burn some CDs before moving out, but I dunno where to start and which albums of the chosen bands would be best.

The bands I have in mind

The Classic CD

Husker Du
The Jesus Lizard
Fugazi
Dead Kennedys (I only have the first album)
any other seminal bands I should try to add?

My Attempt at Indoctrination CD

Microphones
Talibam!
The Residents
Red Krayola
John Maus

(basically, he will hate this CD)

CD of Recent Indie Stuff

Broken Social Scene (only have the second album)
Animal Collective
Who else???

Thanks. xxx

PS if you have any whole entire lists for good introductory compilations, that'd be good!

Let me be the first to say

that this is a stupid thread.

eh?

He's 19, he's from a small town in Wales, only listens to Nirvana.

What can I say?

He if he likes *your* taste

why don't *you* put bands *you* like on *it*?

well, i was thinking it might be fun

to do a patronising kind of introduction.

Then do

but I don't see how this thread is anything other than futile; you're going to end up with 200+ suggestions.

aigggght

I don't know. I just don't want to make a boring compilation. It's always tempting to go 'Listen to my semi-obscure taste in noise!' instead of 'actually these bands are just really good and are maybe all you need to know'.

But if you just suggest what you like

then maybe he'll discover all the "greats" by himself.

Pavement?

Mudhoney.

yep

good one.

Les Savy Fav

Good Guitar Music.

I'd have none of those bands on a 'where to start with music' CD, tbh.

they all seem like the general indie point-scoring bands.

for the classics

all the bands featured in our band could be your life would be a decent starting point

Mudhoney

AFGHAN GODDAMNED WHIGS
Screaming Trees
Dinosaur Jr
Mission of Burma
The Stooges
The Wipers
Sonic Youth

For the classics.

For the new stuff one:

Leave Animal Collective off, they're rubbish.

Dananananakroyd
TV on the Radio
Black Lips
Times New Viking
No Age
The Mae Shi
Johnny Foreigner

Animal Collective

ARE THE BEST THING IN MODERN MUSIC

No, they're a bunch of hippies playing with synthesisers

And attempting to gibber like Butthole Surfers, whilst in actuality they are completely missing the plot.

I'm going to write that

down and/or commit it to memory for the next time someone starts spouting off about those utter shitehawks.
Thankyou

Yeah I know I am so sick of

their imaginative, fun pop music. Shower of bastards.

It's not pop music!

It sounds like it's recorded underwater with Jabba the Hut on vocals as Bill Oddy gets his beard stuck in a theremin.

The start of 'Faded' by Afghan Whigs

sounds a bit like them and you know it.

Also it is pop music. Its also in my opinion very good pop music. And there is nothing wrong with sounding like your music was recorded underwater. Once climate change happens we will all be forced to live in pressurised underwater bio-domes on the ocean floor, so...

Pedantry alert*

These bio-domes would still be air filled I hope? Thus recorded in air but underwater....

I can't help it

science is my real game, I'm just pseudo-indie.

I just saw animal collective

and it turns out they are in fact totally awesome in many ways.

lemonbrickcombo

is that a pro or a con? sounds like a big fucking con.

lemonbrick to the rescue again

thanks

that's sorted out apart from I only have four of the new bands and animal collective are ace! xxxx

each to their own I guess.

I've made my opinions clear.

Do you want me to send some stuff?

aw

Danananananackroyd
Johnny Foreigner
Black Lips

- a couple of songs each would be rad

fanx xx

my e-mail is mrs.menard@gmail.com

i dunno what i could give in return

musically

let me know - we're last fm friends, aren't we?

don't put on Black Lips

if he knows nothing about modern music, he will assume it is all shit

I have a lot of Black Lips and a couple of JF tracks

but no Dananana....cause I'm waiting for their EP to come out. I thought you'd be a fan!

"Could you send me some?"

"I'd rather send you something better."

no, i haven't heard any of their stuff

I am frankly rubbish with anything that's come out recently. Embarrassing confession. I go to see bands a lot, though

Yeah

'I go to see bands a lot'. EXCUSES.

I've hardly got my head to the ground on new music

My favourite artists tend to all be aged around 40 or 50 these days. Unless they're rappers.

I was born in the wrong decade.

yeah, but at least the bands have retro-cred

What if you're 28, and liking bands that were around in your teenage years?

I can't stop listening to the Lemonheads, and Violent Femmes, and JAMC.

But those bands are great

I wish I could've liked good music when I was younger. At the Drive-In live :(

hasn't music taste improved generally?

The only decent bands I listened to were JAMC, and Husker Du (courtesy of the amazing local music library that must have had some cool library assistants) and Pulp (but everyone knew about Pulp). I also really liked Soul Asylum and bought the 'More than Words' Extreme single as well :(

Really can't imagine getting away with that now.

oh yeah

The library only stocked the 80s work of Iggy and Leonard Cohen and David Bowie, so I thought they were lame! Ha ha.

I meant to add Velvet Underground to the good list (in order to cancel out Extreme)

lend him some Fugazi CDs

if he doesn't like them he is a lost cause

I would not have liked Fugazi at first....

I proved not to be a lost cause.

I don't think anyone will actively dislike The Argument

Repeater or 13 songs, maybe, but not The Argument.

yeah it is probably worth being a little more diverse

but it's just, where do you start? Surely just put a bunch of your favourite music on a CD or just lend a few albums that you love.

I'd say half and half

I mean...I heart Shellac but I wouldn't put them on a cd trying to introduce someone to new stuff.

For a Nirvana fan I would say yes to Husker Du and maybe Dead Kennedys but no to Jesus Lizard

seriously

Pixies
Lemonheads
Modest Mouse

then some more obscure stuff.

yes to Pixies definitely

but I would go with Jesus Lizard over Husker Du just because the production on that SST stuff takes some getting used to.

I don't know song names

which albums are those on?

The first one is the opener to Zen Arcade

With the wobbly bass line and staccato drums.

The second is the 2nd track (?) off New Day Rising. Which is definitely their most accessible.

I think Flip Your Wig is more so

and certainly Warehouse which actually has decent production.

Oh and does this boy know REM? Something like Document or Green might be good for a Nirvana fan.

They're the two Husker albums I have not

Are they worth it? I heard they jumped the shark a bit after New Day....

Warehouse songs & stories is really amazing

It's the first album I heard, was obsessed with it - I think it's a double (or has almost 20 songs on it).

It's quite ballady and slow, emotive and romantic, so quite different from earlier stuff!

I went in at the deep end

Metal Circus EP.

Then Zen Arcade
Then Land Speed Record
Then Everything Falls Apart
Then New Day Rising

Such an amazing band. Really.

I don't really listen to them anymore

(although I am going to tomorrow) but Flip Your Wig has always been my favourite album of theirs. Definitely get it.
It is easily in their top 3 along with NDR and Zen Arcade. It's very similar to NDR but I would say even more consistent and catchy.
Warehouse basically sounds like REM as far as I remember but there are still plenty of great songs.

what does he listen to at the moment?

is he the type of person who will be scared by metal?

basically, not much

I think Nirvana and the Smiths.

What about trying some Mogwai on him?

Or maybe squeezing some Isis/early Pelica on there?

good call

on Mogwai

I don't have any Isis, but I think that would be way too heavy anyway for this compliation.

hmmm

in the style of the record doctor in the really good Observer music supplement, I prescribe "Smells Like Twatcore" by World of Carpets.

Use these:

Kick the fucker off with "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart" by Wilco, or possibly Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot."

eurgh..

someone mentioned screaming trees and its made me think...eugh. theys shite.

..

put in some Q and not U.

If you don't put Youth of America by The Wipers on there

He could grow up never hearing them. This would be bad. It happened to me. And then a knight in shining armour handed me two cds. His name was Jamie Summers.

good call

and a pretty big influence on Nirvana, down to ripping off several elements

They're amazing

I got into them through Mission of Burma. Who covered the afore mentioned song.

you would definitely like

definitely definitely

Lies.

oh my god

get the box set on amazon

yes

but don't buy a Wipers T-shirt when you fall in love with them and then realise that it looks really rubbish and you never end up wearing it.

No.

albums that anyone with a soul should like

Thin Lizzy - Live And Dangerous
The Stooges - Raw Power
Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstacy
Santana - Abraxas
Minutemen - DNOTD
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly

and loads more etc blah doodley

recently

i made cd for my sisters who has spent the last 2 years listening to only radiohead, biffy clyro, turkish music and chart rnb. I'm not even exaggerating.
I stuck with the big names and strong tunes.

what about

sebadoh

final list will be posted up tomorrow

after I do the compilation. If anyone cares to know. Thanks! x

Get every Deep Purple MK ll record and hand em over

Don't laugh, MK ll was amazing

Big Shout for Residents but it's doubtful he'll get em- most people thrice his age can't.

forget the first four (classic cd) Classic what?

Husker Du's alright (worst vocals and melodies ever)

The singers of lizard and DK are fucking flakes and anything that comes out of those two brains is cringeworthy.

Fugazi are PC nazis

Husker IS "seminal" the others are "semenal"

I'd just make the cd that you would have wanted at ninteen, give it to him and then discuss later to see where his head is going.
