so this is something i really want to hear from people about.
my top 3 are:
3. Needle in the Hay (Elliott Smith)- The Royal Tenenbaums
2. Ladies&Gentlemen...(Spiritualized)- Vanilla Sky
1. Llorando "Crying" (by Roy Orbison; sung in Spanish by Rebekah Del Rio)- Mulholland Drive
Fuckin' in the Bushes by Oasis in Snatch was the best runner-up probably.
let's hear some maybe i didn't think of.
I've always loved
'Where is my Mind' by the Pixies at the end of Fight Club.
And I really like 'Wise Up' by Aimee Mann in Magnolia.
And Chris Thomas King singing 'Hard Time Killing Floor Blues' in O Brother, Where Art Thou.
Pixies surely wins here
It sounds like it was written for that exact moment in film
I remember being an underage chap sneaking into the cinema and being blown away by that track
Purchased my first Pixies album the following day.
i definitely agree
with the pixies.
probably should have made the list.
the pixies is predictable
but onlybecause it is so perfect for that moment in the film
All of the music
in Magnolia and that track that builds and blasts out in 28 Days Later.
that's Godspeed!
and it's epic.
Gary Jules' version of mad World at the end of Donnie Darko.
theres
def a godspeed one in there from F#A# (dead flag blues?) but I'm pretty sure the track at the end when he's running around the house is someone else. Its been used in a car advert aswell.
.
the other song has, not godspeed
its called
In The House - In A Heartbeat and its by John Murphy if its the one I'm thinking of. Does sound like godspeed though
godspeed=
hastings is in 28 days later.
.
good one, -1 godspeed points to me :)
i was definitely thinking of that too
that is for sure in the top 5.
i love that scene and song.
smashing faces into brick.
awesome.
Or..
The Killing Moon at the bit at the beginning when Donnie's on his bike.
Silver Mt Zion
'thirteen angels round the side of yr bed' in Mister Lonely, when it kicks in it changes the whole tone of the scene (Nuns jumping out of a plane w/out parachutes) from absurd to really striking
what a difference a day makes
run lola run
Mad World
in Donnie Darko
Taxi Driver
Jackson Browne "Late for the Sky" playing after the final shootout scene. Awesome.
Echo & The Bunnymen
as the opener is pretty fine too.
^ and Head Over Heels by Tears For Fears
in the slow panning shot around the school. Donnie Darko is probably my favourite soundtrack ever actually.
Scarborough Fair in
The Graduate. Completely perfect. It shouldn't work. Its the most beautiful song I know, old English folk song reworked, set to Dustin Hoffman walking around the suburbs and driving to New York.
And also
that one in The Departed, not sure what it's called. When they're driving out to the exchange. Some Irish thing that just fits really well with the pace of the scene.
Shipping Up To Boston by Dropkick Murphy's?
How did I forget to mention that? That song is used so well in that film.
That's the one
good isn't it?
'YMCA' in One Night At McCool's
in Coming Home
the uses of Expecting to Fly by buffalo springfield and Once I Was by tim buckley are heartbreaking
Totally in agreement with the Donnie Darko calls;
both phenomenally chosen tracks - I will never forget how excited I was to hear Head Over Heels to that montage. Great stuff.
Another one I really liked was Six Different Ways by The Cure in Rules Of Attraction (an underrated film I thought)
Damn straight
Coming Home is a great movie.
Bit of an odd one
This is an odd one cus it was just in the trailer of the film Everything Is Illuminated, they play 'How It Ends' by Devotchka and it is just wow...made me watch it,and i'm pretty sure the song is not in the film.
haven't seen that one
seems like i'll have to.
My top 3
3) Elliott Smith - Miss Misery (ending of Good Will Hunting)
2) Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels (school shot in Donnie Darko)
1) MBV - Soon (Late night taxi through Tokyo in Lost In Translation)
*MBV - Sometimes
Obv.
Rookie mistake.
Mine are
1) Wise Up - Aimee Mann - Magnolia
2) Jumping Jack Flash - Rolling Stones -Mean Streets
3) Love Reign o'er Me - The Who - Quadrophenia
I forgot to add..
all the songs in Grease. YEAH, you heard me - GREASE IS THE WORD.
I'm going with
Nico's These days in The Royal Tenenbaums.
Yann Tierson's La Valse D'Amélie in Amelie. And The Stone's Jumping Jack Flash at the end of Fear and Loathing.
I quite
enjoyed 'Something in the Way' in 'Jarhead'.
When it first played, I wasnt so sure, but as the scene went on, I couldnt think of a more perfect song.
Wild at Heart
Powermad & Nicholas Cage - Slaughterhouse/Love Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEz-cwJxtu8&feature=related
Repo Man- Iggy Pop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiC-HIIzJZo
Big Lebowski / Gypsy Kings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqsdVH9QA9k&feature=related
Tiny Dancer in Almost Famous
yes
¬¬
It has to be
Exit Music in Romeo and Juliet.
Talk Show Host
surely? Exit Music isn't in it apart from the end credits is it?
I'm not sure whether I agree with using pop songs.
It's quite nice to be watching a film then going "oh i like that song!", and it can be really effective sometimes, but usually only because the song has a pre-existing "feel" to it. I.e needle in the hay is about addiction, depression, desperation etc, so it's really effective in the royal tenenbaums but pretty lazy on the directors part.
I don't know what the alternative would be though. I'm pretty sure it would be unreasonable to expect an OST for every film ever made.
So, best creative uses of songs in films? Where the song is used for more than just to emphasise its meaning anyway, or something?
the guy who did
the music for Amadeus should have got an Oscar.
Everyone
loves a bit of Sigur Ros in The Life Aquatic.
Good times - Jimmy Barnes & INXS
in the Lost Boys. When the vampire blows up. Death by Stereo!
who chooses what songs to put in?
cos its a massive job. is it one persons full time job to put music to films? if it is then i want that job.
it's an awesome job
they're called Music Supervisors. I want it!
Donnie Darko wins this thread for me.
The opening scene with Echo and the Bunneymen, the Tears for Fear montage, the Notorious usage, the Mad World ending... simply amazing.
However, Zero 7 - The Waiting Line is really good in Garden State.
.
REM - 'Stay' in A Life Less Ordinary, when Ewan McGregor's being forced to dig his own grave.
Rage Against The Machine in Natural Born killers, when Woody Harrelson's walking around the prison room telling the guards a joke, just as it all kicks off.
L7 'Shitlist', in Natural Born Killers... just as it all kicks off.
NBK is the best-sountracked film of all time, no competition.
Shitlist
in Natural Born Killers - I absolutely agree.
'Bonehead' by Naked City in Funny Games (US) - although it's used a couple of times in the film, particularly the first time in contrast to what has just happened and what the music foreshadows.
Aphex Twin (Come To Daddy if I remember correctly) in 8mm - when Nicolas Cage is in the house looking for that guy and it's playing really loud. Makes that scene all the more intense.
AH!
i wondered if anyone had seen a life less ordinary.
that scene is great too.
not too big on rem overall though.
i'd probably go with...
the donnie darko love too. you can't beat a lot of the cheesy 70s rock in dazed & confused though. hell yes!
Just Dropped In (To See What My Condition My Condition Was In)
Kenny Rogers and The First Edition
in
The Big Lebowski.
I don't usually like it when some twat smugly declares 'end of thread', but in this case I make an exception.
End of thread
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
the overdose sequence in trainspotting
to the tune of lou reed's perfect day
YES!
no one said this?
ernio morricone's
scores for once upon a time in the west and once upon a time in america must surely destroy all the competition.
and yes i love mad world.
also, the other song gary jules and michael andrews did for it (i cant remember what its called, the one also in the car advert where they float off on balloons) was almost as good.
Yes
Once Upon A Time In The West is incredible. And Ecstasy of Gold from The Good Bad Ugly.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
in Face Off during the big shooting scene. Something about the innocent sound of that song up against the blood and guns.
Baby got Back
at the end of Shrek where donkey serenades the dragon with "I like big butts and I cannot lie" ...
Two slightly different ones
1. 'Bright Eyes' in Watership Down. Gets me every time.
And, for pure comedy value,
2. 'Aquarius/ Let the Sunshine In' at the end of 40 Year Old Virgin.
Sorry to lower the tone, guys.
Damnit
Gonna have to watch the latter now!
Mr Brooks...
Rubbish film but when the Vicious Traditions by The Veils kicks in, it gets a whole lot better. Even though the track itself isn't amazing it just suits the scene really well.
This is a really good one actually as I could name loads thinking about it. There is a really cool 60's soundtrack in a film called 1969 with a young Keither Sutherland and Robert Downey Jr. Love that soundtrack.
AND if we are getting classical at all then:
Star Wars - Binary Sunset
Raiders Of The Lost Ark - The Map Room
Any time Clair De Lune kicks in!!
^yep - Vicious Traditions
'haunting'
Vicious Traditions
is a great track!
Play it again, Sam
though Bogey never actually sez that... in Casablaca. I dunno what it's called, but "A kiss is just a kiss..."
And pretty much anytime Martin Scorcese uses Gimme Shelter... I dig it.
* as time goes by
i'm getting pretty sick
of people using gimme shelter. boring.
not really a 'song'
bur the Set Fire to Flames track towards the end of Dead Mans Shoes is seriously something else
Mean Streets
De Niro walking into the red lit bar, a bird on each arm whilst Jumpin Jack Flash pumps out. Phoar!
baba o reily
in summer of sam is AWESOME
^ and
because it always reminds me of the beginning of CSI. Which I love.
Sad, but I really rate
Bittersweet Symphony at the end of Cruel Intentions, obvious but very very fitting.
That John Murphy track from 28 Days Later is wicked too.
Alone In Kyoto by air in Lost In Translation.
The weirdest [sorry to change tack] is Stereophonics - Maybe Someday at the end of Crash.
Although it does follow through with a kind of logic; shit band, shit song, shit film.
^ Yes
To Lost In Translation. Actually, the whole soundtrack from that film's awesome.
Again, possibly sad
but i love Colourblind by Counting Crows in cruel intentions too.
New Noise at the begining of Crank
Yes Yes
Really well used in Friday Night Lights too
Yeah
It should be in every film really
The end of 'Devil's Rejects' with the use of 'Freebird' is pretty ace
oooohhhhh
Sweet Emotion by Aerosmith in Dazed and Confused -- love that film, and the song.
Best track in a brilliant soundtrack
Foghat 'Slowride' over the closing credits is awesome too
M. Ward - Dead Man
At the end of Dead Man's Shoes. Perfect
Adem - Statued
also in Dead Man's Shoes
Ding Dong the Witch is Dead...
Naked Gun Two and a Half
Seriously, in terms of comedy, it's funny as fuck
These
'Mad World' in Donnie Darko ftw, and also:
'Sound of Silence' in The Graduate
'New Slang' in Garden State
'East Hastings' in 28 Days Later
The Beethoven symphony at the end of Irreversible
'The End' in Apocalypse Now
and also:
'Fever Frei' by Rammstein in XXX
Great shout
on The End
I think the film is called The Killing Fields
Its about two journalists caught up in the cambodian genocide, and 'imagine' by John Lennon plays at the very end when they are reunited for the first time in years. I know its a really big cheesy song and its really shouldnt work in a serious, understated movie, but somehow its just perfect for that moment.
It is.
.
its been a bit ruined now, by over play oin the radio
but i thought 'mad world' worked really really well at the end of donnie darko.
thats all i can think of at the top of my head
