err...
I just listened to Bon Ivers album. All i can say is that he is a total legend but thanks to having some genius god like songs not all are at the same level... but my god man it's like hearing the equivalent to what might have happened if JB hadn't drowned.
Steady
It's a good album but seriously, don't compare it to Buckley. Every song plods along at the same place, it's pleasant, interestingly-produced accoustic fare but people will have forgotten about it in a year's time.
^i agree its not quite jeff buckley worthy
but i dont think people will have forgotten about it in a years time.his voice is amazing
I agree too...
I think Bon Iver is good. It's a good album and i would never slate him...
However i don't quite see what everyone is going on about with regards to him being THAT amazing!
I think he is just another of those artists that people need to calm down over a bit.
Sometimes i wonder what people are actually hearing rather than reading about...
"Sometimes i wonder what people are actually hearing rather than reading about..."
you do realise some people may have stumbled across this gem without having read up on it? I was sent it as a recommendation through lastfm months ago.. never heard any reviews, had no idea of the hype... etc etc.. and i was blown away by his voice independent of any external influence.
If he continues to produce music like this, he will not be forgotten.
seafulloftrains
hits the nail on the head.
yeah i got it recommended by last
and thought it was ok and bought the album.
i think it's really dull. i'd rather have a bit of phosphorescent any day.
^^^^^^^this
Pride is so, so much better. It just hasn't had the hype machine behind it.
yeah
i got the album after hearing him at atp, read nothing about him and really like the album but to be honest was a little disappointed by it considering how much i adored the live show.
Excuse me :O
I found this guy at ATP and hadn't read ANYTHING on him. I just went in for some time killer before Born Ruffians came on, his voice was amazing live and his set was very emotional. I baught the album and it's not untill I had already posted my verdict on it till I started seeing all these buzz thread :)
I have now seen him live 3 times and all 3 of them are highlights x
^^That's great^^
By no means you are not the type of person i'm talking about.
Anyone is allowed to love anything they listen to no matter how they find it. I mean, this thread alone has made me want to go back and listen to the album again (remember i do actually like Bon Iver).
Im merely remarking on my shock of how some things that in my opinion, aren't THAT amazing get people flocking on message boards.
I then end up respecting the people more who have the balls to just say they don't like it rather than go along with the flock. x
I won't have forgotten about it in a years time
No way. It's my favourite album released this year. Seeing him live Monday night just confirmed what I already suspected from listening to the album, the man is a genius! It was one of the best gigs I have ever been to (top 5). Calling it 'pleasant' is like describing JBs music as 'nice'.
But it's really, really like him
like they've channelled his voice on to wax. It's like WAY like him...really like him. It sounds more like Jeff Buckley than Jeff Buckley in parts*.
(*I haven't heard the album)
Hark at Mystic Meg
up there
Good Idea
lets hype an artist up so that he can't possibly live up to our expectations.
He is both a god and a genius.
Genius thread also
Jeff Buckley...
...was terrible. Over-emoting does not equal good songs.
he wasnt terrible though was he really
really.like really think about it?NO
I really, really, really don't like Jeff Buckley.
I always think that he's be that kid at school who is in all the school plays and would play acoustic guitar at lunchtime in the spot where the most girls physically possible could see him.
lol yeah i agree with this but his voice is beautiful
:)
That's
what you want to think. It is, however, total bollocks. The man was amazed and appalled that at 26 he'd become a sex symbol when at school he'd been ignored by girls. He's also of the most credible artists of all time.
hahahahahahahahahaha
hahahaha
Why do people like him so much?
He am rubbish.
I'm very excited about the Bon Iver album
mainly because for once the artist I'm listening to on heavy rotation is one my wife doesn't hate. This is not normally the case. So yeah it's nice to have a spouse friendly quality album to cheer for.
(she is a big Jeff Buckley fan, if this is relevant)
Don't see
what all the fuss is about myself
have you actually listened to the album fully?
Ahhh
but in my opinion, that is what is good about Bon Iver. He writes really nice songs and he is clearly a gifted writer...
However, i am unable to justify and 'god like' comments about him at this stage. It's just another example of people jumping on the "OMG a new artists who EVERYONE likes and so therefore i HAVE to like them" syndrome...
Hope that makes sense...
And the Jeff Buckley comparison is ridiculous
Also I don't really get the Jeff Buckley comparison
surely Iron & Wine is the obvious comparison or perhaps Will Oldham
No, Will Oldham is an interesting songwriter
He is really something special live
Not a huge fan of the album beforehand, but on the strength of his live show I'm convinced he's got the talent to really make it big.
Yeah
My brother got it the other day,i'm just not really a fan of the whole overwrought, she killed me lyrics. Like a creible Dashboard!
ntohing wrong with a credible dashbaord!
I think
its a fantastic album, but I hate it when these things get ridiculously hyped - he's not reinventing the wheel. I missed him supporting Iron and Wine in Sheffield - curse you early door times! Yeah its really good, but in a similar vein I think the Ola Podrida album is probably even better, today anyway.
The only thing credible about Bon Iver
is how INcredibLY boring he is.
Or, it's like hearing something very, very boring.
^exactly.
Give me Envy any day.
There are a subset of posters
on this forum who declare an artist is a genius or god when there new album comes out. They forget about them in a few weeks when the next thing they buy comes out and declare that as genius.
It's just like the NME here
the word genius
is used far too much nowadays
*shakes fist at anybody looking my way*
Except without a crossword.
Sadly true
Beach House were genius 6 months ago but now that the album has been released...
he's really not that amazing
I think he was closer to being a god when he had more beard
but I saw him on telly and he was more shaven so I think he is missing a trick.
He's alright
but No Age and Why? have made better records this year. That said I expect him to grow on me.
No Age, Atlas Sound
as well, I like Why? but his voice gets a bit nasa and geeky for me some times hehe
nasal
I fell into the Why?
hype on here and bought Alopecia and i do have to say that it will no doubt be on top of the old lastfm this week for sure! But i know what you mean about his voice
yeah I love the album and have played it lots
infact its on now hehe... but yeah his voice is well annoying some times. So it wont be top of my end of year lists by quite a bit I dont think
fair enough...
I'd say i was probably being bit hyper earlier with the excitement of the first listen still ringing in my ears.
In fairness its only asking for trouble to call an artist like bon iver a god or a genius as that is obviously not what he's about, but for the first time listening to a record, i have been left pretty much speechless and a bit emotional.
there in't anything wrong
with getting excited about a record then shouting about it on the internet. Pasion about music is why we are all here aint it. Bon Iver is ace.
^ This. Exactly
High-5
:)
He is ( neraly very ) good
but I think many songwriters are better at the moment ( Samamidon, doveman, Radical Face, the Sleeping Years... )
He'll probably get a bit less love in a few months and I don't see the album being in many TOP10 at the end of the year ( but he should be in many TOP50... )
But I'm usually wrong, so...
i hope you're wrong : )
I think as indie becomes less and less credible and pop becomes dominant once again... the folk will come back into the main forum for everyone who doesn't want to listen to shit... sort of like how the ninties ended and this decade began. i hope so anyway!
That sounds like my idea of hell
meh, hell schmell...
it could be crap... but if stuff of the same substance and quality of Bon Iver keep popping up i wont complain.
There will always be a bunch of good bands around... i just hope there will be less crap ones.
The thing about Bon Iver is
I could take you to any middling-quality folk night anywhere and find like two or three more Bon Ivers, if they decided at any point to go retreat to a cabin in the woods so they had a good story.
Kind of like how you could find two or three more Johnny Foreigners
...at any middling-quality indie night then? We get it, you don't like the album. Nothing wrong with people hyping an artist they like, I think in this case it's actually to do with the music.
From my blog's comments:

The closer I observe the dealings of "indie" labels, the more I see they act just like the majors in a lot of ways. Example: putting out watered-down versions of bands that are already popular or artists that are making music that's simply agreeable.

Your point?
That the music is only 'agreeable'? Fair enough, everyone is entitled to an opinion.
MelesMeles
is thinking in a similar way to me.
I always curious what it is about an album that is not THAT great that makes people flock in hoardes to all agree how amazing it is.
In this case i can't help but think the the whole 'retreating to a log cabin' thing does somewhat play a role in it.
The idea of it sounds absolutely beautiful to me, and im sure it does to many, and so therefore that idea of idyllic beauty is somehow transferred onto the music. In way it can make us listen to the music whilst thinking through rose tinted glasses...
In reality as an album, i really do like it, but in now way does it justify an argument about whether we should start comparing him to figures referred to for their innovative contribution to music, when it really is just another good album.
It's the NEW artist syndrome over and over again.
You'll all be slating him when one of his songs ends up on an advert! ha ha! :)
naaa
i just watched the last episode in season 4 of House, and lo and behold a Bon Iver track popped up at the end as things got a bit emotional...
it was awesome. plus i recon if an artist gets "big" good on him - he deserves a break for the work put in touring his ass off and making a good record.
I would like to hear 'Skinny Love' on a McDonalds advert
that would be GOLD
^^ha ha i agree.
My comment about not liking him once his song appeared on an advert was only in jest...
But i bet you if it does happen for an 02 ad or something like that there will be a thread about it on here and some of the love will wear off...
Obviously not from you daudi! ;)
haha
well not unless it's in support of Hillary Clinton : )
well...
the usual "middling-quality folk night" is usually boring as hell... and a lot of folk artists seem to have nothing to say or at least nothing to make you turn your head, stop slurping your beer and stop whispering to you're mate about how freaking bored you are...
so having a good story is just the icing on the cake... for a lot of artists - you may wish to remember a good phrase: 'you cant polish a turd'
Jeff Buckley < Tim Buckley
WHEN WILL YOU PEOPLE LEARN
also, i really really really want this album
^so indie
i'll sell you mine
i like the album
it's not consistently amazing but there are some really lovely moments.
however, persistent hyperbole ftl.
From what i've heard it's pretty nice
acousticy, nice singing, pretty whimsical etc.
Nothing near "godlike", i'm afraid.
There is no such thing as a god-like artist.
Please can everyone refrain from the term god-like.
In other news I really like the Bon Iver album. Gorgeous stuff.
grizzly bear
is better
i like the record, lyrics are a little suspect in places, ALSO
log cabin? for how long? presumably someone sent him return to cookie mountain so he could ape all those vocal melodies?! a log cabin with itunes and pitchfork i reckon.
7.1
I met him while he was packing his van up after his gig on monday
and what a very nice chap he is too.
It was certainly the best gig i've been to in years.
the story is dubious
for sure, and yes the lyrics are mostly throwaway tosh, mostly. in fact, i dont think i've really paid much attention to them at all. but then the album's on it's 3rd listen today already, so joke's on me.
Tickets for his St Giles
gig in London are shifting on ebay for 160 quid a pair now. I think the album is lovely (that's why I was looking), but it does make me worry a little...
