NARCOLEPSY - part two.

Some of you may remember my concerns about suffering from narcolepsy. As luck would have it, I most certainly am.
I blatantly fell asleep during training last week, and only woke up when my head fell forward.
Also, I have now discoverd that the sleep paralysis that I first began to encounter 10 years ago is a typical symptom of narcolepsy.
Fucking brilliant, eh?

Any suggestions for staying awake?

i think

this is what is making it worse. since starting my new job, i have made a point of being in bed at a reasonable hour. this is when it started to happen.

^

it'll just be your body getting used to the changes. I fall asleep regularly, i'm tired within an hour of getting up, don't be too quick to have someone diagnose something, it'll just be your body not getting enough of something, be it the right types of food, regular sleep or load and loads of coke, you massive madhead.

haha

<3

dont read your

threads...BAM!!!! got your there...fight fight fight

you know

i had irn bru today. ergo, i would win.

Did u know America wont allow this stuff to be imported

because the scottish wont tell them whats in it

I bet you were thrilled

that we only had 2 mixers during ATP and one of them was IRN BRU, u welled up and wept a heart tear of love to joey, liam and I as we said 'have some?'

you forgot

the pigeon <3

ELLLO!

ELLLO!

It had been there all night, you speak to it and it pisses off!

not before

pecking dan lovingly on the foreheed.

I definetly

bought it in San Fran Cisco

that's complete rubbish

when i was in America, i actually got bought some Irn-Bru from a shop in Portland. so there.

Conjur up a nightmare

that haunts u no matter where you you

....

i already have one of those.

:O!

i actually had an even meaner alternative to that post

but it would have had the potential to be so spectacularly offensive...i'm glad i didn't

seriously though,

lay it to rest?

Doesn't your doctor have the right advice?

Is it not chemically controllable? Sounds mega-shit, anyway.

but i dont WANT to put those nasty chemicals

into my body to keep me awake :(

Find a support group/message board?

That's really rubbish, sorry to hear it.

a guy from my local has got narcolepsy

he's always nodding off at the bar, and we're never sure if he's falling asleep or just drunk. i'm sure i've seen him driving, though. are you allowed to drive if you are narcoleptic?

Yeah but I don't understand it so this may sound silly

but surely if you could just 'keep yourself awake' it wouldn't be a medical condition? I thought you just fall asleep regardless of what you're doing.

NARCOLEPSY - part threzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

i have actual sleep paralysis

but I didn't know that anything to do with narcolepsy.

I have a perennial allergy, and on the days it's really really bad, I can't sleep, hallucinate, and have visions of people pressing down on my chest (because I can't breathe properly). It sounds scary, but I know it's just because of the allergy (which makes it less frightening afterwards, at least).

Some nights I've basically only had 14 minutes sleep.

I think narcolepsy doesn't just happen - I would try to sort the sleep paralysis out though. That's actually quite dangerous.

!!

not just dangerous, but pretty terriffying! i read below that you suffer from sleep apnoea...this is the conclusion that i'd pretty much come to with my sleep paralysis - the hallucinations are awful - with mine, I can actually 'hear' footsteps climbing the stairs, the room is blurry, i try to shout, but can't and it feels like someone is ascending on me, then theres the heavy weight on the chest. awful.

you should get it sorted out

if you think it's narcolepsy-related because that's potentially dangerous

it only happens about a dozen times a year at the most, and it's really not so bad afterwards. if it's properly affecting - on a weekly basis - you might need to have an operation

it's been good being able to speak about it, as most people find it too fucking weird. my boyfriend used to say it was like being with linda blair in the exorcist (i'm lucky with boyfriends)

i have this

well, the 'people pressing down on my chest' part. i can feel myself trying to scream and punch out, but i don't move. it's scary as fuck. it doesn't happen very often, and hasn't happened for about a year. but when it does i force myself to stay awake for the rest of the night so that it doesn't happen again.

If it really is narcolepsy

you need to go to the doctors. There are plenty of things that they can do for you. I know someone who has it and he has to have regular naps during the day as well as medication. He's had it for years and it's a lot more under control now.

install a sprinkler system on your forehead

that is activated by slow leaning of it's possition

I've read that driving is good for narcolepsy

Can you drive?
It's supposed to be even better if you can't drive because you have to concentrate more.
Try driving around for hours.

....

I've heard operating heavy machinery is the best. Could be untrue - maybe needs to be tested.

I always thought

Narcolepsy was uncontrolable, if you can keep yourself awake then it's unlikely you have it. Its often caused by a trigger as well such as excitement, stress or fear.

Exactly

I might have narcolpsy though so I'm a bit senstitive.
Everytime I get in bed at about midnight I fall asleep.

i think im narcoleptic

i tend to fall unconscious for hours at a time every night

no -

it's not completely uncontrollable. there are varying levels of narcolepsy as well - plus, i told you i ACTUALLY fell asleep during a training session...clearly not controlled. i did it again today - mid conversation with a sales guy - i was a passenger in a car, luckily.
i am going to the doctors on monday.

what is sleep paralysis?

*prepares to be mocked*

waking up and not being able to move for upwards oif 20mins

and shitting your pants thinking you've either died, or have somehow snapped your neck by sleeping

that happened to me once

though it seemed instead like every muscle in my body had decided to time its pulling, or whatever, at the same time. not only couldn't i move after waking up, i was in agony doing anything for the rest of the day. then, next day, i was fine

sleep paralysis means exactly that

you can't move in your sleep, and you suffer auditory/visual hallucinations. Dreams where you are trying to run but feel like you can't are usually due to mild sleep paralysis.

Basically, your brain is 'awake' even though you're in REM sleep (your brain should switch off, so you're not terrified by your dreams or attempt to act them out). If your brain is awake, you'll basically experience your dreams as real.

i think it's quite common, but might be exacerbated by things like narcolepsy (I didn't know this before) and sleep apnoea (in my case).

sounds horrible.

I kick in my sleep loads.

it's pretty fucking scary

One night, I hallucinated three times. I could see someone on my window sill, then standing over, and then basically leaning over me. Each time, I was really really scared and struggling to breathe and move.

But to be honest, nightmares shake me up each time much more (no more horror films for me, for a while...) The hallucinations are always pretty much the same with the sleep paralysis, and you can at least put it down to a medical condition.

I'm rubbish at realising I'm going through sleep paralysis

Once I was sure there was a ninja in the shadows of my room who had injected me with a paralysation potion.

Another time, I thought I could hear a small creature scuttling around on my floor and I was waiting for it to come up to my bed and bite me.

And another time I could see a jellyfish pulsating light in the corner of my room whilst a woman repeatedly said softly "Please stop, please stop, please stop".

I really struggled to sleep at all for the rest of the night after these...

jesus christ

are you serious?! You are joking?

I wish I had hallucinations like that!

I think mine are the standard Fuseli type visions which you get with sleep paralysis. Boring!

They're really horrible

and in each I can't move which makes them even more terrifying.

Lots of them culminate in someone or something applying pressure to the centre of my chest, which I believe is a common feeling that accompanies sleep paralysis.

Did you know that thought to be the real reason behind lots of UFO abduction stories?

yeah, apparently

they are also a source of stories about demonic possession (this is probably less common than UFO abduction stories).

It would be so amazing to think you'd been abducted by an alien...or maybe not. The creature thing sounds horrible, and the woman thing...genuinely disturbing. Have you got any help for the paralysis?

Yes, the pressure on the chest! That's the worst. The freakiest thing was I dreamt that I was sleeping next to a weapon, but was too paralysed to get it to fend off my attacker and instead I was going 'urrrrghhhhh' trying to scream as his/her face got closer and the chest pressure got worse.

I wish I got some of these weird visions

I have had sleep paralysis about 10 times and the only "hallucination" I have ever had was of my dad coming in to my room and opening the window, when he actually hadn't.

Sleep Paralysis

is pretty awful. Unfortunately I went through a phase of experiencing it virtually every night for about a year. The worst hallucinations generally involved some sort of amphibious man coming into the room, he would then move towards me reallllly slowly, then sit down on my chest, sometimes even with hands around the neck, face coming closer to the point where our faces were essentially touching etc. It really played around with my mind to be honest. But I seem to experience the paralysis without the hallucinations most nights (including last night). Im not entirely sure how much conscious force you can exert in the situation, but it does seem like panicking is the worst thing you can do, and usually trying to mentally move the toes and the fingers a little bit is the best!

But the day after

hallucinations usually precipitates in a strange delirium thats actually quite conducive to writing. A certain type of writing though, all things considered.

wow, for a year?

that sounds really damaging!

Did you go to the doctor?

I think mine is related to my allergy, as it only happens on days I can't go to sleep because my sinuses are so fucked.

I don't know about the writing, personally. Mine are quite mundane! Don't feature jellyfish or amphibian men!

Oh yeah

it wasnt that fun and mostly meant that I didnt want to go to sleep ever. But no I didnt go to the doctor...I think it was possibly more to do with certain things I was doing at the time (that I dont think I can talk about here!) and generally being quite stressed out.I think I knew in advance that there was very little point in going to the doctor because he'd give me a solution that I probably wasn't too willing to take. Needlessly vague I know!

yeh these are scaaaaaary!

like once or twice ive woken up to see a massive spider the size of the room hanging over my head. naturally i screamed and ran out of the room to wake up the rest of my house. unfortunately tho the spider was gone when they came back and i was ridiculed.

but it was shit scary!

Once I woke up in the mddle of the night

I was convinced it was wake up time and started getting up. It turned out to be 5am!

LOL!

haha

a guy in my group did this in africa last year. He got up at 2am or so and starting putting on his clothes and packing his tent up!

!!

this - SO MUCH!!
