FUCK YEAH
Seriously all da h8rz are so rubbish, r they havnt heard blood sugar sex magic. It's amazing:
Guitar solos
songs about having sex with policewomen
mohicans
amazing bass (Shut up anyone that says "slap bass is rubbish though AHAHAHAHAH")
One of the tightest drummers. Yeah he's not stunning technique wise but he's clearly got da funk and is sort of loose but really tight at the same time.
And they're all cool.
John Frusciante
needs mentioning. he is a genius
he's one of my top 3 heros
chili peppers were my teenage band
i got all their albums, i should listen to them more often, i never get round to it though. did you hear any of Frusciante's solo stuff, some of that was ace.
got it all :)
Niandra la des is probably my favourite ever album
all? that must be loads
didnt he release like 6 albums in 6 months at some point? i never got niandra la des, but i loved to record only water. did he ever do more stuff like failure33object? that song blew my mind!
hmm yeah his "post drugs" stuff is very different
i prefer his druggy stuff. A lot of the 6 albums in 6 months stuff was pretty weak, as you'd expect for trying to create at that rate. Ah well.
Curtains, Inside of Emptiness, and The Will to Death
were pretty good.
You'll never be able to convince me that
'Funk Rap' is ever a good thing.
I look at RHCP like this:
Started off really shit, apart from Under The Bridge.
Carried on being shit.
Got good with Californication.
Were ok with By The Way.
Started getting really shit again.
I think they can only get worse. I doubt they'll be able to top Give It Away on the dreadfulness scale again though.
you'll never be able to convince me
that you have anything worth saying
I also think they're part of this
typically American reincarnation of early 90s rock music.
What they've become is similar to the Foo Fighters. Started off with a fairly new, dazzling idea a few years ago, and have finally planed it down so that its smooth enough to be gobbled up by the billions of U2 lovers out there.
Its also awfully cringeworthy when they try clinging on to their prime days. That Funky Wunky one they did recently was like watching my stepdad dance at a wedding.
I don't like
Flea's constant show off basslines - we know you're good even without hearing thousands of notes, DUDE
.... They started about 10 years before under the bridge
And the album that comes from is probably their best, i.e not shit.
By the way is better than californication
Their new album is one of the worst things i've ever heard.
^Give it away = A pile of dinosaur diarrhoea
they're
immeasurably shite on so many levels -
funk bass - check
wanky guitar solo's - check
indicipherably gash lyrics - check
you know you're struggling if you're trying to "big up" a band by referencing their musicianship
shut up.
hipster idiot
aye thats me
in a nutshell,excellent comeback
you know you're struggling if you're trying to "big up" a band by referencing their musicianship
that makes no sense. since when has it been wrong to commend good musicianship as a reason why you think a band is good? and if it that statement is right, its surely also true that you are struggling if you are trying to dis a band by referencing their musicianship.
it makes quite alot of sense
for example he's obviously trying to make a point about how "good" this album is in terms of - "you should really listen to it and the music is ace" but the only reference he makes to this is how there's songs about shagging a policewoman
its not wrong to commend musicianship it just doesnt fit with the rest of his point,if i wanted wanky solo's i'd listen to dragonforce
the guitar solos arn't "wanky"
Lol
Clearly this chump has no idea what he's talking about.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers are a great band. Not only have they defined their own unique sound, they've written some of the best rock songs of the last fifteen or so years plus they've also managed to retain and expand their popularity to this very day.
Whether you like that or not, or think that's cool or not, you cannot deny that it is remarkable.
i find it even more remarkable
that people actually lap this shit up
good use of the old "you clearly dont know what you're talking about as your opinion differs from mine" arguement btw :)
One day,
I hope I will be as cool and indie as you *sigh*
me too
i bet he was listening to Devo in the womb
i think devo are terrible
not quite on a level with your laughable attempts at decrying anyone who doesnt agree with your taste music as an indier than thou hipster though
lmao
"immeasurably shite on so many levels -
funk bass - check
wanky guitar solo's - check
indicipherably gash lyrics - check"
^this
^ exactly this
Just because a band can play their instruments well (which is clearly the case with the Chilli Peppers) doesn't mean they don't make utterly laughable music.
an awesome band
and yep, stadium arcadium is a bad record by their standards.
its got some great songs on it, but it doesnt really seem to work as an album. and the funk stuff is fun but not a patch on the glory of bssm.
have you heard the b-sides for the album though? some of those are amazing.
i dont know if you still can, but way back in the day, frusciante did a solo album for free on tinternet. 'from the sounds inside' it was called or something. that was pretty cool album.
and in fairness
the original post only says bssm is amazing, and then gives some reasons, which he thinks constitute that amazingness.
One of which is the fact that it has a song about shagging a policewoman.
And damn straight, sir psycho sexy is an amazing song from an amazing album.
But the lyrics...
they're just... awful.
Sub-awful.
Beyond awful.
Terrible, in fact.
I know there's more to a band than their lyrics (and at the time By the Way came out, I was a Chilis fan), but listening to them now I find it really hard to get past the fact that they have a gurning chimp-man spitting nonsense out for a frontman.
Frusciante is pretty ace though.
really quite
shockingly awful live too. Surprisingly so.
What are you even talking about?
They're excellent showmen. Socks on cocks, the teddybear suit, Frusciante's sex faces etc
Seriously, lyrics are obviously not the point of RHCP
You're completely missing the point.
"They just don't speak to me like Oberst does"
:D
Dammit, I'm predicatable.
Like I say, I know lyrics/vocals aren't everything, and I have a lot of love for the way Frusciante plays, but I just don't have the time for RHCP the way I did a few years ago. Such is life.
*Slinks away to go listen to whiny-introspective-indie-electro-folk*
Seriously.
I have to admit, i used to love them more than anything, but nt so much these days. The impetus for this thread was listening to blood sugar sex magic and thinking "wait, this actually IS amazingly good"
"creamy beaver, hotter than a fever, i'm the giver cos she's the reciever"
theres a devil in my dick
and some demons in my semen! :D
Thing is,
you've got to expect a backlash like this on DiS, when you post a thread about the Chilis.
They're one of the most ultimately uncool bands ever. Dads like them. But not in a 'my dad listens to Sam Cooke' way - more a 'my dad thinks that Snow Patrol song about lying down is good'.
Y'dig?
It confuses me.
People on here think gay against you are hilarious but can't appreciate RHCP being funny. I just dont get it.
They are probably
far too busy laughing at much funnier funky Nu-Metal bands.
I LOVE Sam Cooke,
love, love, love him... what's wrong with that, huh?
I think you misunderestimated me.
I know that one day...
the human being and fish can co-exist peacefully
would you shut up about
how your dad likes sam cooke
My dad doesn't like Sam Cooke.
Sorry.
Heh. You're still really pissed off cos I wrote 'zzz' underneath that boring rant about sexism or something.
It was a joke, my sensitive Scotch petal!
i got this in PM form as well
Cool.
I've always seen them heavily criticized on her
and i kinda like 'em. That said, Stadium Arcadium is played on repeat in the kitchen of my halls and it's boring MOR.
*Here
stadium arcadium
is the musical equivalent of someone taking a shit, eating it and then sicking it back up.
Other than that the chilis got me in to music and I own all their albums.
nah
Especially In Michigan, the end of Wet Sand, Desecration Smile and Turn It Again are some of John Frusciante's finest moments ever, so it's not all bad.
There is a lot of shit on it though..
easily the worst band in the history of music
^not true but they are boring
i've never liked them...
think their a bit wank.. the reason why the have sold many records is because wank sells!
I used to love them in my teens!
But lost interest when they popped again minus the funk and with more of the pop!
I would still gladly listen to some good musicianship on BSSM than pretty much any of the shit that is being churned out these days.
boingy bass
and stupid posturing
make me hate the RHCP more than trips to the dentist and lemon juice in my eyes.
I'm in a real "hater" mood today.
Slap Bass.
'nuff said.
We
nearly sacked our drummer for attempting to mount a defence of them.
Exactly why your band is probably rubbish.
He's actually in Funkadelic.
i would like to agree with you
RHCP were the first band i got into, in fact californication was the first album i ever bought, and i spent the next few days reading the lyrics and listening to the album and i knew every word.
i have a tremendous soft spot for them and i\ll always enjoy the classics. my drum teacher was acually friends with their drummer, Chad Smith, so i kinda picked up chad's style a bit.
either way, i don't mind how much everyone here hates them, i'll always love their output up until By the Way.
the ataxia JF solo albums are amazing
by far his best solo stuff
RHCP
were the first band I really got into. In 2008, they are dull and pretty much a parody of themselves - complete shit. They have, though, written some great, fun songs.
And, yes, John Frusciante is a genius.
i think
the dissing the lyrics (which is a common criticism) is unjustified to an extent. Having read 'scar tissue' it kind of showed reasoning behind the lyrics, which at times have been pretty good.
I own:
BSSM= very good.
Californication- loved it when i first got it, no real desire to listen to it now.
By the Way- Thought it was boring when it first came out. Now I'd probably rate it as their best work.
SA- too long, does have some good songs on it though (mainly the Frusciante led ones).
the fact is that indie kids just don't like funk
particularly if it's being performed by white people. Maybe it's a sort of middle class racism based on perceived inauthenticity, maybe it's a punky mistrust of technical adequacy, maybe it's because indie kids are, at a base level, completely antisexual/sexually inadequate, so would much rather sway their greasy curtains whilst wistfully pondering some doomed romance than do shirtless pelvic thrust dancing.
I say this as no fan of RHCP. All of their albums since BSSM have been horrific, and i haven't even heard that in about 8 years. I'm just a lover of The Funk
^ what he said
i wish they hadnt become so complacent with rick rubin. BSSM was a great album. I think that OHM and Cali were great too, but more because of the change in band dynamics. By The Way was good, a tad over done in places, but JF was much more involved with the production. And Stadium Arcadium is excessively over-produced, stiflingly so.
Rick Rubin was a great catalyst for BSSM, and he's served well for a few other albums, but i think they've hit a bit of a dead end, whereas their early albums changed producer more with much more exciting results.
If they wanted to bring back the funk, its time to give george a ring. I think Rick Rubin can only help them to become stale stadium dinosaurs.
Didnt rubin used to be interesting once upon a time?
But RHCP were one of the most punk bands EVA
in terms of "lets do loads of acid, go play a show at a strip club, fuck a hooker and then not give a shit" rather than the gay "DC Hardcore" people on here love so much.
Indie people are so staunch in their "hatred" for RHCP
they even say freaky styley was shite, "even though george clinton produced it".
George clinton is like the token indie "yeah I like black music" person, and they're even willing to deny him in order to show off how much they hate "inauthenticity"
My theory
most people pretend to hate them because they're angry that Dave Navarro was kicked out just as they finally started kickin' ass (tm)
exactly
Dave Navarro is King of Men.
they're not all cool
anthony kiedis is not cool.
i don't like their image, but i did when i was like 13. i used to be really into them but its not something i would listen to now and enjoy. but im glad i used to like them.
He's not really is he?
Have you read his autobiography? It's basically just "yeah so my dad was pretty nuts and introduced me to drugs and prostitutes so i had sex with a prostitute then took a drug then made an album then took another drug then had sex with another prostitute then made and album then took another drug then..."
Still, he has good dance moves.
I'm an indie hipster fag
and so not much of a fan, I'm afraid.
But what I will say is that this thread almost makes me wish I did like 'em. Because on the one side we have yes_, who is just stating an honest opinion over which he has little control, whilst on the other we have people decrying funk/slap/"boingy" bass as a reason not to listen to a band! These people are dead to me. Larry and Bootsy are two of my heroes, and if you can't respect them at some level then you have no soul.
The Chilis, on the other hand...
I think they're terrible
and have hated them for decades!
What do I know mind you,I'm currently listening to Barbra Streisand's second album!!!
Red Hot Chili Peppers
don't particularly interest me at all
Yeah.
I only listen to bands that reference kafka and have maps of european cities as their cd inserts, with the credits disguised as street names.
In all honesty though
that would be an amazing insert!
Yeah actually.
I'm keeping that one.
YOU HEARD ME INTERNET, COPYRIGHT OF ME
Whenever my smash debut album comes out...
He isn't actually overly zealous with the slap bass
Not too much of that at all.
"Overly zealous"
kick ass
True.
His basslines are amazing. He stopped slapping it in 85 or something.
shmemenemeh
there is the slap and the pop on all their albums i think. possibly not on cali, but thats just me going through it in my head.
not that theres anything wrong with slap bass.
he said hed veer away from that style for bssm (and did a little bit, and also created some amazing bass lines).
Anyone who seriously doubts the power of good slap bass...
should listen to the bass riff in Prince's "Let's Work"... it's incredible.
i know
people will queue up to have me barred from the site.
but it is just the (hendrixesque) sex
