I've decided to take up bass guitar, but don't know what would be a decent (but cheap-ish) guitar to buy that would be ideal for a beginner.

Below here is the part where you write nice suggestions/give me links to pretty pictures.

p.s. Can someone give me lessons kythxby

playing bass

somthing I quit doing after discovering DiS.

Just made a deal on a 1968 Sunn 200 s bass rig though.

I have some bass books, I'll dig them out and get back

Only bass I'd ever want to have is

http://tinyurl.com/3nu376

or this Gibson my brother has which looks like a guitar but is actually a bass.

swish? my god boy, do you want help or not?

that is a killer axe

I suggest you get a a Squire jazz or precision bass and the best amp you can afford. With bass having a decent amp is key. Practice amps are ok but just don't support the bass experience very well. You can get good combo amps for a fair price. If you can find stuff on craigslist used that would be even better.

google this:

type in what you want then "craigslist.org" and hit enter, the expand by doing advanced w/ 100 hits per page.

also, along with the item your looking for type in your general location so:

bass guitar birmingham "craigslist.org"

remember not to put the apostrophe in craig's (craigs) and craigslist.org in quotations "craigslist.org"

then once you get your gear; find a teacher and learn stuff.

you called me a boy.

:'(

absolute legendary axe! the ric 4001 (4003?)

I have a fender jazz butterscotch w/ black pickguard

basses I want

Hagstrom 8 string

gibson rd

gibson eb-1 my dream bass, it's shaped like a fiddle and has painted on f- holes, it's a rock solid chunk of wood.

gibson grabber

gibson doubleneck sg bass/six string electric

gibson jack cassady

gibson ebo

fender areodyne jazz

ampeg dan armstrong clear lucite w/ interchangable pick-ups

ok- i'll look for the books now

you actually are calling it an axe

without irony arent you?

I have a squier musicmaster

they stopped making them about 10 years ago but crop up cheaply on ebay all the time, they look amazing http://www.ii-park.net/~students/images/impression/sq_musicmaster_bass_1024.jpg
they have a shortscale neck which makes it easy for beginers and it sounds preety great (they are actually better than the fender originals which used guitar pickups)

I can't see the whole guitar

but it looks very cool, kind of like my Son's Mustang and how many frets?

Squire basses are the best for the money

nice floors too!

19 frets

its very mustang

I can't really recommend a good beginner bass

but all i can do is tell you to learn with fingers

It may be harder to start of with but it sounds far better than a pick and you'll thank me for it

I always play my acoustic guitar

without a pick anyway... thanks for the advice.

If you're around over the summer

I can attempt to give you lessons. For a nominal fee/beer.

Fender Jazz and Percision ones are good to start with, and Peavey do a good line in starter ones too.

And no picks. No sir.

I would be infinitely grateful

and beer/food would be given of course.

That and GH3 breaks.

this might be the guy^

the "no pics" is a good sign he knows his way around the instrument.

But just between you and me: picks crush on bass!

But for now, listen to the man

ernie ball

olp musicman stingray copy things are pretty cheap, but very decent. i have one and love it. was going to save for a standard precision bass when i bought it, but the difference between the two wasn't enough to justify the extra cost at the time.

I brought myself a mustard yellow Fender p-bass

the other day. It is the sex.

But seriously, you can't go wrong with a squire

p-bass copy. Have only just stopped using mine after about 6 years of gigging and practice. Can't complain really.

Coolbeans

I agree, I've had mine

for 6 years and it's done me proud!

And sorry to be pernickety but...

It's a "squier", not a "squire"

Just to point it out...

:D

BUT

if you ebay SQUIRE instead of Squier you can get some tasty bargains. fatfingers.com is your friend

HOOO!!!

its the double!

I got this:

http://www.andertons.co.uk/acatalog/info_0301670406.html
(although, not from there, so shop around!) and I reckon it was a great place to start. Came with a book that, while being a little too "so you're 16 and want to be a rock star?!?!", at least got me started on the very very basics. Although it looks like they've changed it for a dvd now, so I don't know how much that still applies...
Once you've had it a couple of weeks, I'd strongly recommend this: http://preview.tinyurl.com/4pjttu
It's covers basic technique and six or seven different styles (a few reggae lines, a few blues, a few funk, a few rock, etc) so you can work out what you want to learn more.

And finally, it's a "bass". Just, "bass". No "guitar". Ya dig?

Squier Bronco

http://www.interstatemusic.com/wcsstore/InterstateMusic/ims/ipf/GTS310902558.jpg

sexy bass.
i think youd be able to get one for about 100 quids. simple yet effective

this is looking a likely prospect

fanks' people

yey!

i win!

http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/squier-bronco/3819

only 95 pounds. ultimate bargain. :)

ordered, in black

I can't wait (it's an early birthday present I don't actually have any money)!

nice one!

i hope you love it

Yay,

girl bassists are totally the hottest kind of girl there is.

...this is a nice squier jazz..

...

http://www.squierguitars.com/products/index.php?partno=0326702521

...it is a wee bit more expensive but is pretty much as good as a `proper` fender & near indestructable if bit heavy...

I have a Peavy Dynabass

Its done me really well for about 5 or 6 years. Its only about £180 and is good for semi-professional level - Plus its green as well :)

Go for a squier jazz or p-bass

Cheap, cheerful and will last you a good few years. You can get one second hand for about £100 if you're lucky.

re: picks

didn't Kim Deal use a pick for THAT bass sound in the pixies? Surely therefore picks rule?

vintage mustang bass

http://www.glenngoodman.com/images/old_pix/78%20Mustang%20Bass%20pic%20from%20eBay.jpg

as i see you are a fellow female, try to find one of the smaller basses like the lovely fender mustang (they've reissued them, but try to find a vintage one if at all possible!). i used to borrow an old friend's vintage mustang (looked just like the one in the picture -- i miss that bass!) as it was far easier to play than my fender jazz bass. don't get me wrong, the jazz bass is amazing but as i'm only 5 feet off the ground, my jazz bass looks far larger than i am and it's really heavy!
