'pparently their albums are not that good but all the singles i've heard are total smash hits, so it makes sense to me that that's the best place to start.
In that case I shall elaborate. Standing on the Beach singles collection is the one to get. Faith, 17 Seconds, Pornography are classic goth Cure. Head on the Door, poppier, but brilliant. No one likes TheTop, but I do. Everyone likes Disintegrati9on, but I think it's just ok. Boys Don't Cry has the best collection of early Cure singles, like Fire in Cairo.
EATB: Heaven Up Here is darkest. Crocodiles is rockiest. Porcupine is best. Ocean Rain has lots of schmaltzy strings, great, but a notch below the first three. The Grey album starts a long slide that never gets terrible, but they wasn't the same after that.
My third favorite band of the era was Siouxsie and the Banshees, but I'll save that for another time. :)
as i do myself with all bands with large back catalogues.
My first Cure album was Pornography, and i guess it's not a bad place to start. very dark and has one of my favourite riffs ever on it (One Hundred Years)
disintegration
wish
head on the door
kiss me kiss me kiss me
staring at the sea (1st singles collection)
in my opinion, even though their "singles" are excellent, they are sometimes the most whimsical songs on the album....from the edge of the deep green sea (on Wish) is a good example of this...one of their best tracks ever & not released as a single.
Oh...nd Pornography was their 4th album...after Boys Dont't Cry / Three Imaginary Boys, 17 Seconds, Faith
Staring At The Sea (1st compilation)
Three Imaginary Boys
Seventeen Seconds
Faith
Pornography
Head On The Door
Disintegration
The Singles (2nd compilation)
singles compilation

...
If you want the more 'upbeat' stuff, than Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. Either that or The Head On The Door.
if you want something more introspective and 'downbeat' than Disintegration probably.
Anything from the 80s
Nobody ever wants to know about the Bunnymen. :(
I have Ocean Rain!
But I haven't started listening to it yet, I'd assume that's the album you'd reccomend first? Lol.
i have three echo and the bunnymen albums!
Disintegration
I think I'll play it safe
and get the 'greatest hits'. Just to start me off, and I like the sound of Disintegration.
PS I would also like to know about the Bunnymen:)
Greatest Hits followed by disintegration
was the route i took - and i fully endorse it
this is the correct answer.
disintegration is the best album ever!!
/kyle
I also took this route
and would like to confirm that it is indeed the best way to go.
:)

I have just scribbled on a post-it note
Standing on the Beach Cure singles..Echo Porcupine
Hopefully that will make sense when I go CD shopping tomorrow.
Thank you, I was too busy learning how to walk in the 80s to listen to any music.
It's called Staring At The Sea on CD
Standing On The Beach was the cassette's title, fact fans. But yeah, get it because it's great.
As is Head On The Door.
My favorite album is Wild Mood Swings,
but that probably is not a good place to start with them.
any love for Bloodflowers on here?
i really rate it
I just bought it the other day,
along with Disintegration.
I like them both, but like I said on the thread about CDs purchased this week, the happy Cure stuff gets to me more.
I'll give Bloodflowers another few good listens though.
Boys Don't Cry
The American release of there first album. One of favourite ever albums. Not really liked any of there stuff post that apart from the odd song.
this is a good start
nice a poppy, then you can get into the rest of the stuff through that
Pornography
Go straight to "The Figurehead", then "A Strange Day", then "Siamese Twins", then "One Hundred Years", then everything else ;-)
i really would suggest a best of or something
as i do myself with all bands with large back catalogues.

buy in this order
disintegration
wish
head on the door
kiss me kiss me kiss me
staring at the sea (1st singles collection)

I don't get the love for Disintegration
It just sounds like an hour of slow-paced moping to me (excluding Lullaby and Love Song).
I much prefer the early albums, Head on the Door and Wish.
That's why I like it
I'd say
Staring At The Sea (1st compilation)
Three Imaginary Boys
Seventeen Seconds
Faith
Pornography
Head On The Door
Disintegration
The Singles (2nd compilation)
The rest? Take or leave at your own leisure.
I guess that's the beauty of The Cure
Something for everyone!
