I am fairly new to them (apart from seeing them live a year ago). Just wondering which album to buy first...

One of my 3 favourite albums ever.
For the proper 'slowcore' experience
'I could live in Hope' is quintessential Low.
'Things we lost in the fire' is probably the best all-rounder though. More variety of songs and moods. Superb song-writing and the last track 'in metal' is the best thing they've ever done.
AVOID the christmas CD. It was originally a freebie novelty and has not aged well.

taking the advice of the last paragraph here, the Christmas EP is terrific (not aged well? makes it sound like a Britpop album or something), especially Just Like Christmas and The Little Drummer Boy.
Would you really recommend it to someone new to Low?
Really? Honestly? It's fun for a spin in late December time but you're on much better ground with Things we Lost.

but your comments seemed to imply to never listen to it ever. I also recommended Things We Lost In The Fire, as seen below.

But I wouldn't listen to it in May either. You're right that 'Just Like Christmas' is a highlight but it doesn't hang together as a whole like pretty much all the rest of their work does. I would put it on a par with 'Pablo Honey'. Pablo isn't bad as such, but it's not a patch on any other Radiohead record.

Christmas was my introduction to Low
And remains my favourite single disc by them. I has aged badly since January but you can guarantee that'll change come late November.
For albums I'd say Long Division (controversial?) or Secret Name.
Things We Lost in the Fire
Wonderful record. Hell, they're all great but that's their high point to date.

I'd go for 'I could live in hope' but it's not as varied (though it is superb).
Secret Name is worth a punt too (and Albini recorded which Is Always A Good Thing).

is where id start, because it gives a much more vivid indication of low's sound. obiously things we lost and the great destroyer have some off the slightly more immediate moments on too.
Drums and Guns
apart from Hatchet which is terrible.
Does the record they did with Dirty 3...
...count as an album?
I think most would consider this an EP.

Is their masterpiece in my opinion - all the albums are great, but that one is amazing.

I struggle to think of another band that has been so consistently excellent (I would say Radiohead, feel free to disagree).

I love that album so much. 'Shots and Ladders' always leaves a lump in my throat. 'Last Snowstorm of the Year', 'Point of Disgust'? Gorgeous songs.
That and 'Things We Lost In The Fire' are my two favourites.
If you can still get A Lifetime Of Temporary Relief for £12
It's amazing value! It's not actually the worst introduction to the band either, you get all the videos to the singles and quite a lot of other stuff which is well worthwhile.
Otherwise, Things We Lost In The Fire, Long Division and Drums & Guns are my favourites. My least liked is Trust and even that's good.
My Introduction To Low
was 'Things We Lost...' and I followed it up with 'Trust' and then 'The Great Destroyer'. The production on 'Trust' is pretty hard to swallow after the warmth and thickness of 'Things We Lost...', the reverb just feels really synthetic and, erm, hate to say it, dated. Still a good album with some lovely songs but not a patch on 'Things We Lost'

Secret Name
has really grown on me, but Things we lost in the fire and Trust are still my favourites.
Also, the Christmas album is definitely worth having, despite the naysayers. Long way around the sea is incredible, and it makes a change from all those Christams crooner albums.
