ISIS - best album?

I own Oceanic which is pretty good but where do I go from here? Any other bands doing that whole ambient/post-rock/growl like something insane and diseased/back to ambient (breathe sigh of relief)/drool-inducing skull-crushing riff/ambient again - type thing?

Cult of Luna do that thing

and if you want to keep it brit-underground so do Bossk

there are lots and lots of bands a bit like them

but for me they are still by far the best.

Get Panopticon next. It's pretty much just as good as Oceanic and a couple of songs are the best things they have done IMO.

As for other bands, if you are thinking atmospheric metal then I'd start looking at Neurosis and Old Man Gloom (who also feature Aaron Turner - get Seminar II and III).

Jupiter by Cave In is good too

and all that French Black Metal.

I need some names by the way doc.

for atmospheric black metal?

Wolves in the Throne Room are my favourites but they're not French

then try Alcest for something shoegazey

Oceanic -> Panopticon

is fairly standard progression i think. Celestial is pretty cool too, and In the Absence of truth is unfairly maligned - some great songs and the drummings cracking. Not quite so crushing though. But they'd aready done 3 albums of that.

i took panopticon from the library this morning

it's amazing!
wish i'd discovered this band sooner.
is oceanic seen as there best lp then?

You're too kind

about In the Absence of Truth. In fact you're plain wrong.

It has a few greeat tracks on it and some very average ones.

I would say Panopticon and Oceanic are equally immense.

Celestial and sgnl05 are also both very good.

The Neurosis and OMG tips are both spot on.

End of.

you need oceanic, panopticon and in the absence of truth

I honestly think all 3 are essential. There are a lot of metal snobs who don't like 'in the absence' as it has singing on it not just growling. Sod 'em. It's inventive, varied and demonstrates their superb musicianship. I love it. Imo it is ISIS (much more so than tool, for example) who have done to metal what Radiohead did for 'indie'.

Panopticon

My favourite album of theirs.

If you're looking for more stuff like that, I'd recommend Bossk, Envy and Neurosis. Not such a massive CoL fan, though they are pretty respected within their genre.

Maybe Pelican are worth a look as well? Definitely their S/T and Australasia EPs which are utterly brutal.

Pelican definitely

Envy are coming more from a hardcore background but still have the ace dynamics and intensity.
