Why do I like Bright Eyes?

I just purchased "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" and I really like it especially "Road To Joy" what an amazing song.

If you look at my general music taste it seems quite random that I should like Bright Eyes and it's not just me this applies to.

This leads me to a couple of questions.

1) Do you like Bright Eyes and does it fit in with your general music taste?

2) Why do so many "indie people" like them/him.

-So good that he/they can be appreciated outside of people usual tastes?

-A way for "indie people" to appear more eclectic?

-Psychological reasons? You like Bright Eyes because people keep telling you how amazing they/he are/is.

I think it's a combination of the above, having said this I know I'm not fooling myself I genuinely like Bright Eyes.

Either that or just talk about anything to do with Bright Eyes, your choice.

I like Bright Eyes

because I just do really.

I really, really think Bright Eyes are past the point where anyone gets any indie points for liking them.

Not extra indie points..

..but surely you lose a couple of thousand if you don't like them/him and own at least one album. :)

^Probably the correct answer.

I wondered how long it would take for someone to say that.

jamie can hardly talk

i hear he kisses a picture of morrissey every night before he goes to bed.

morissey...hmmm..

I picture him as more of a Johnney Depp with Christopher Walken for dessert...

um

i used to like bright eyes because i related to his emotional outciries???
i don't like him anyomre, maybe because i "got bored"??? or "grew up"??? i have no idea.

I wouldn't say indie people

like him to appear more eclectic in the slightest.

I used to really like him/them but his whiney vocals started to grate after a while and the lyrics came across a little too try-hard.

I don't listen to lyrics generally..

..but surely that's the best part of Bright Eyes.

you don't listen to lyrics generally?

How does that work, do you hum until it gets to the solos?

if you dont pay much attention to the lyrics

then bright eyes must be pretty dull for you being that they are nromally the main focal point non?

normally*

innit

you're weird

very weird

Why?

I know people that like Bright Eyes and they're always pointing out how good the lyrics are, that's why I notice them.

i stand by my initial claim

you're weird

because of what jamie said.

more likely: i think he has a great way with words. i like how there's always a glimmer of something hopeful in his songs. i like the way mogis' arrangements, and the way that a lot of them on paper shouldn't work but they it all meshes together. i think Lifted is a brilliant piece of work, a sprawling, messed up concept record for a sprawling, messed up world. i like that he doesn't feel the need to pander to anyone with his music.

plus, i really AM emo.

^Good answer

I need more listens to notice some of this but the "glimmer of something hopeful in his songs" bit I agree with.

^ everything this man says

i've also cried over bright eyes. real men cry to bright eyes when they relate to the emotional outpouring of his songs.

the more i listen to him, the more i realise that bright eyes may actually be my real favourite band/artist.

Most people I speak to

Seem to think he's rubbish and a bit of a chancer! I like him a lot, although his lyrics veer from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Isn't an indie fan listening to the bright eyes to show they're eclectic a bit like an oasis fan listening to shed 7 to show they're not all about the britpop?

When I first listened to Wide Awake the only songs I really liked on it were Road To Joy and Lua! I like them all now though. Although First Day Of Your Life's a bit silly.

I didn't like Bright Eyes

in so much as I'd never given Conor (+ band) a listen.

But boyfriend was excited about Cassadaga, so I had a listen and thought it was ok, went back to literally last week (a year since its release, I guess) and really liked it.

It took listening to the lyrics etc. to see that... and also the quality of the music. So I'm planning on stealing some more albums off of him to see if i really do like Bright Eyes.

Though his long hair is a bit pants

I don't see how listening

to Bright Eyes would seem leftfield for an 'indie' fan.

It's not.

I don't mean indie in an obscure sense such as the tastes of people on this site, just people that are "indie" compared to the mainstream.

Wasn't he self releasing records

when he was 16? He's the most indie man alive! Also shambolic acoustic guitars is pretty indie.

What's everyone's favourite Bright Eyes record? Mine's Lifted by a small distance (it'd be in my top 10 ever). I'm not sure he'll ever better it but the new stuff's still good. I think Cassadaga could do with being a couple of songs shorter.

I see why people are getting confused.

I ment the indie sound not being "indie". When I use indie to mean obscurity my friend always thinks I'm talking about the sound. I could give an example.

I too can see why people

are getting confused.

I know what I'm on about..

..but no-one else seems to, that happens a lot on here.

I'm still confused!

Do you mean Bright Eyes is too mainstream (and hence he's not indie in an obscure sense)? Or do you mean he doesn't sound indie (like, erm, other indie bands)?

He's not that indie sounding..

..but it seems acceptable to like him, like an artist to make yourself look more eclectic. A bit like Why? but obviously with a completely different sound.

P.S. I've not actually heard any Why? tracks this is just the impression I get.

Oh, in that case

I disagree! I think he sounds quite indie and would expect him to feature on a ''best indie in the world... ever'' compilation.

please define what you mean

by an "indie sound."

Ok, I'll try.

Interpol. Mew. Broken Social Scene. The Strokes. The National. The Cribs. The Libertines. Bloc Party. Arcade Fire.

Should I do more than this?

His music doesn't sound like the type of music people that listen to the above bands would listen to.

Another artist that is similar in this way to Bright Eyes is Regina Spektor.

The bands in that list

are as disaparate and different to each other as Bright Eyes is to them.

But they're still all what I would consider as indie.

In conclusion the term "indie" needs to be scrapped. One huge grey area, I hate it.

I'm afraid I really don't understand the point you are making

I think you've just demonstrated a plus to using broad terms to describe music; a fan of say The Cribs might be recommended something such as Mew because they are both, ahem, "indie" and so not be limited

Yes but people get confused.

I actually think it's because Bright Eyes is essentially one guy, whereas the bands I mentioned are several people, maybe that's what I mean, I have no idea anymore.

Bright Eyes isn't one guy

I quit this thread

Not literaly, I know that.

It's seen that way though.

Except it's not seen that way

I don't even like Bright Eyes and I'm well aware that it's not just Conor Oberst. As for the bands you listed, half of them are on major labels.

proving my point below about "indie" being a confusing term.

I'm not talking about how obscure bands are. Indie basically has two meanings these days. I mean indie sounding as in "rock music for girls" and all that shit.

at the end of the day music,

like all things in life needs to be classified to an extent. its what humans do. we classify things, crystallise their important common features, downplay their differences, and contrast them to the next category.
these categorizations are often unanimous across social groups. music is quite an individual thing though, so unless you buy heavily into some music 'scene', your categorizations are probably gonna be different to the next guys. this reflects the wide range of similarities and differences between bands, and shows that people are having different subjective responses.
so unless you have some all conquering genre definition plan which everyone will agree with, is it really worth pointing out that you disagree with him until he squirms and claims bright eyes is a person?

Bright Eyes is definitely my favourite band,

and have been since I bought I'm Wide Awake/Digital Ash when they came out, after a friend played me At the Bottom of Everything and convinced me to take a chance.

I can't say exactly why I think Bright Eyes are so good, or why they mean so much to me. But I'll try:

The lyrics are the best I've ever heard and by that, I mean the most poetic, with incredible use of imagery, switching from ambiguity to clarity, with a use of language that is often astounding. For example - the opening of Digital Ash - "Death, data entry, anthill law, encoded arc, our common cause, drink liquid clocks till I see God, crystal display, can't turn it off, don't talk, don't talk" - the way the first world of the album sums up its main concern, subtly reaffirmed by the repeated D sound, the image of the anthill that comes back as a symbol of blind faith, and way the first syllable of "our common" repeats the "arc" that comes before it, the way the last phrase repeats itself as a self-denfing mantra. The expression that he attains with such simple language is mindblowing.

I also think the repeated concerns of his whole work - death, time, language, sickness, reailty, love, etc - are the great themes of all literature, and that Oberst is completely aware of the profundity behind them and unafraid to explore it (hence why some people think he tries too hard, or that it's 6th form stuff). The line in Landlocked Blues - ""you'll be free child once you have died, from the shackles of language and measurable time" shows an awareness of the two things that limit all human expression, and which his art seeks to overcome.

Thirdly, the songwriting is brilliant, simple yet inventive chord structures that anyone can hum along too, mixed with more experimental sounds and arrangements that are frequently challenging (Thereza and Thomas anyone?).

I like Bright Eyes because they're sincere, and not afraid to make mistakes, or to take a risk.

But in truth, I like them for the same reason I like chocolate. I just do.

(Wow. Sorry about the length/probably inchoherence. Before anyone asks, yes, I am an English student. I think the past few weeks spent on my dissertation on Nabokov and time have had a profound effect on me. I'm going to go lie down now).

above massively...

i genuinely love bright eyes, despite the feeling i get that i shouldnt and that i should grow up a bit i suppose i do not care, what alot of people dont realise is that his early work is wonderful too if not very emo but yes the boy has a wonderful grasp of language... his personality is vaguely questionable but glasto 2005 was one of the greatest live shows i have ever seen... therte is nothing like watching something teetering on the precipice of collapse...

he's...

no dylan.

lazy comparison

used by rubbish journalists. he never made the claim to be dylan, like johnny borrell or something.

i think if you're really pushed for a comparison it should be leonard cohen. but even that's a bit off.

i reckon...

within the broad context of popular music they do bear comparison. certainly for me they occupy a similar area of music... and, for me, dylan does it a whole lot better.

I really like Bright Eyes

I can be pretty emo as well though. I think I truley fell in love with him when he did Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, as it made me see that he wasn't all about the folky acoustic stuff and could push stuff forward a little bit. Plus his lyrics are beautiful and they have conected with me durring parts of my life.

his personality is questionable...

mostly due to his many vices, penchant for self destruction and inability to live without apparently self medicating in less than appropriate ways.... this is only based on the times i have seen him and what i have read.. i do love him though... so much

I don't understand how this makes his personality questionable.

He's merely troubled, surely. I don't know anything about the guy but your points don't seem reason enough to say he has a questionable personality.

he slagged off John Peel

or something which caused a lot of anger here and other places

the reaction to that was silly

especially a place like this where irreverent humour is the norm

definitely

particularly as it was apparent to anyone who wasnt a pissed lout of hack like journalist that his issue was not with mr peel but with the stream of bands all weekend lauding him in a transparent sycophantic attempt to garner whoops from an ill informed crowd... My faveourite moment was when he declared "john peel is a super serious coke head just like me!" or words to that effect and some bloke next to me started howling about how he was being disrespectful and it was some form of slander! john peel drove captain beefheart round america for a year for fucks sake! surely he indulged in the occaisional vice????

amanda palmer naked though.... that was a little bit of a highlight, she has hairy armpits like all women should

I wasnt there

but read alot about it (theres a good account in the dresden dolls blog) my favourite bit was something along the lines of 'clap your credit cards in the air, we're gonna make poverty history, we're doing it for john peel'. Seemed just funny to me, more a swipe at hypocracy than anything

indeed

the credit card bit was brilliant "visa card in your right hand, mastercard in the left" also "this songs gonna make poverty history.... watch poverty here i come!!" but the best was "john peels dead and poverty is history but who cares cos i found a place i can buy a burger for less then 5 pounds!!" brilliant

First day of my life

was the first song we played during our wedding service after our snog!

Cliches' are good sometimes!

We entered to Sebastian Tellier La Ritournelle.

I DJed at my step bro's wedding

in Ibiza and played a accoustic DJ set durring the day after while every one was hungover in the villa and First day of my life got played about 3 times in that set cos people kept asking me to rewind it.

i love bright eyes

but can understand why people don't, it's a marmite situation...

I will walk down the aisle to La Ritournelle

FOR SURE.
Have said that for yeeeeears now.

Jesus, your wedding must have been raaaaaaather emotional. I would have cried being there!

ahhh

Lovely comment, thanks.

I think La Ritournelle should be the wedding march for all romantic DISers!

and yes there were tears!

in the unlikely event

I get married, I would dub out the lottery line becuse it is vey unromantic, the rest of the song is so sweet though

i listened to some Bright Eyes a hour or so ago

it was pretty sweet.

What album?

I'm Wide Awake

i wanted to listen to Lifted but my CD player doesn't like my copy and plays it at double speed. this is, obviously, hilarious, but also Not So Good.

Bright Eyes is pretty amazing but...

Bright Eyes is definitely one of my favorite bands and has been for quite a while, but The Study Band (http://thestudyband.com or myspace.com/thestudyband) just came out and they are possibly even more amazing. It's singer/songwriter style, but it has a fuller sounds than most singer/songwriters. Good work Eric Morelli!!!

from the people who brought you...

'Why do I enjoy bright sunny days?'

'Why do I dislike the sewer outside my house bursting and flooding my life in raw efluva?'

etc

Pointless thread question...

Why does anyone like anything? Err, because ya just do?!

Just cuz its not what u usually listen to, doesznt mean u aren't allowed to like it...

This thread is making my head hurt <:(

i have a bright eyes prejudice

because of that first day of my life video. conor oberst might have had no say in it, but its ruined for me what would probably have been a good band to get into. might still give it a go, though. should i?
