Dreadlocks.

Okay, so I've decided I'd like to get dreads. Or rather.. I'm looking into it.

Does anyone know about how to go about it?
I'm aware that there are different methods; including a dread perm, which I'm wary of because I get the impression you need to get it maintained professionally and can be expensive..
I'm not really willing to go for the neglect approach as I'm far too impatiant to wait three years or whatever.
From what I gather the backcombing method is the best, instant dreads naturally. Would a salon speciallising in dreads do this for me, or do they only do dreads using chemicals?

Also, my hair is pretty short at the moment, about three inches long roughly. Would I need to wait until it's longer before getting it dreaded or will it be long enough now. Is there such a thing as permanent synthetic dreads?

And another thing.. Is it possible to bleach and/or dye hair that is already dreaded?

I'd be really appreciative if somebody replied to this now that I've went to all the bother of typing it out. :)

Don't do it!

You're really beautiful, DON'T RUIN YOURSELF. JUST DON'T!
:'''''''''''''''''''(

I thought I might get a 'don't do it' or two.

Everybody said that before I shaved my head and it was a truely liberating experiance.
I've had my hair every colour and cut and I'm just bored with it now. I've always liked dreads and I LOVE the idea of having a hairstyle that won't take much maintenance (hence being bald).

Erm.. But..

Thanks anyway. :)

My friend had them

and said they were very high maintenance.

um, as far as i'm aware they're not low maintenance.

you have to take an awful lot of care with them, wax(?)ing them every day and stuff to keep their shape. i think.

if you really really want to do it

a friend of a friend or something like that once gave herself some using hairspray and a flat iron or something, but that's like the back alley abortion of dreadlock-giving i'm sure. also, i bet it smells.

^HELPFUL

do it

i love dreads. If i could be bothered to grow my hair and suffer looking like one of the beatles for a few months id probably have a go too.

DON'T DO IT

GET A MOHICAN.

a mohican on a girl when done right

looks lovely. in my opinion.

I'd love to see if this is true

But the sides of my head like warm and cosy.

ohhhh you mean a mohawk!

how does even that have a different name? weird. you don't even have mohicans and mohawks that side of the atlantic.

Mohawk then... Well, I'm lost.

Eek. I think mohican and mohawk mean the same hairstyle here.

I'm confused.

WHY DID I EVEN MENTION IT D:

they do; i've googled it

i just didn't know what you were talking about at first because in the u.s. (where i am) we call it a mohawk

I expect you to be rocking a mohican at Field Day.......

then I want people to be stopping and pointing at NaziPunkBirthdayLauren as you flaunt your swastika cake to their liberal dismay!

no no no.

i'm going for the 50s look. i already have the blondeness, i just have to grow it a little and put it in rollers. white shirt, pencil skirt... sorted!

You can go as the indie Eva Braun then!

:D

Not that she lived to see the 50s of course.

okay but i'll need a hitler too.

i might get arrested or something though.

Sweet jesus, do you reckon I could pull off

an 'ironic' Hitler moustache?!

go for it.

it'd be funny! oh remind me to book my ticket tomorrow please. and flights and stuff while i still have the money.

Ha! I'm semi tempted......

Will PM/email/Facebook you with reminders tomorrow.

fanx

won't be on DiS in the day though, unless you start a thread i can't see it 'cause i can't log on. i hate the work IE.

OMG

Okay, you have been proven correct.

I loved that season of America's Next Top Model.

meeee toooo

she's so pretty. i was rooting for her to win. anyone who can model with that hair = amazing.

I've had a mohican.

Not completly bald at the sidea, but shaved pretty close.

It made me look a bit too dykey.

ohhh, do you have a picature?

i've always wanted one but never had the guts. i don't think i have the face for it.

I do, but not on this computer.

It looked pretty bad, but I think the colour had a big part to ply in that; black and green.

Not holding back when getting new hair styles feels great, you should go for it!

hahaha dreads

I had dreads

in the early 90s. I blamed grunge. What's your excuse for getting them now??

I had a friend (who also had dreads) do my hair. He did a pretty good job to be honest, and charged next to nothing - it was ridiculously expensive at the hairdressers even then, so its probably even more nowadays.

No idea as to the other questions, I'm think that you will have to ask these to wherever you are going to have them done at.

you use bees wax and back comb it

but dont do it!

FAILlocks

i did my brothers dreads for him...

...wax and lots of back combing.. takes agggesss. his hair was a bit longer than 3 inches too. But yeah, they do smell a bit after a while! and i don't know about dying the hair once it's dreaded. if they're big fat dreads you may have some trouble. but thinner dreads i would imagine, would be ok.

for wax

http://www.knottyboy.com/

and it has some instructions on how to dye the dreads too :)

I've always toyed with the idea

of me having a medusa hairstyle, like with tangles/dreads beaded and platted locks , maybe it might need some formers to give some snake like stability, some dangly snakey locks some writhing and a few poking uppish (not necessarily with snakes heads on) Im kind of already there as my hair is knackered and all over the place, I'd like to go the whole hog.

Go with your rasta idea if you feel like it, dont let people put you off by saying 'no i love your hair like it is'

Or if you cant wait cos your hair is too short try these hehehehe

Get dreads!

Go for it! I think they would really suit you. i came across this post whilst i was looking for some dreadwax so i thought i'de add a comment :)
basically the best way is to section your hair in a bricklay pattern about 1" x 1" then just backcomb crazy! especially at the roots, wax em up,& dont wash them too much to start with. maybe 1/2 time a week them more after they've locked better - washing really helps them lock up!!
it might be better to grow your hair a lil longer first.
they do take patience, but keep knotting them n palm rollin loads & you should be good. can get them done in the salon but ive heard its very expensive, & theres few places ive found that do it.
ooh, & ive bleached mine a few times & i have some fat dreads too but it seems to work fine - i found some hair dye on ebay (cant remember what it was called) but it was specifically for dreadlocks - keep meaning to try it!
I know the post is a bit late but hope this helps! I love my dreadies! :P x

When I was at primary school

I misheard the deputy-head referring to dreadlocks as "dead loss". Thinking about it, I was probably right.

they're not low maintenance

at all, apparently. Well, you have to look after them so they don't look completely gross anyway.

but yeah, don't do it. I have only ever seen dreads look good on one person, and he looks way better without them now anyway.
