Sun. Oh. Bracket. Bracket. Bracket?
Well anyway, they were the one of the featured artists on MySpace so I clicked on them and listened to their first song, pretty much entirely.
I think it was enough to write them off.
It was so nothing that I can't even comment on it.
But how someone could sit at home and stick a record on with that sort of background noise just constantly happening and then gradually ending without having anything at all is pretty surprising.
I'll try it out.
More or less melodic than Fuck Buttons?
I don't think you can even begin to apply the word melodic to Sunn o)))
abandon ideas of
melody and rhythm
That's gonna be
difficult for me. Meh, no harm in trying.
I just did
I was expecting some form of climax in the music, but it was just one, long creepy bass note with some cymbal (sp) wankery occasionally. Suffice to say, I Don't Get It.
I really think you should listen to afghan whigs
I said it yesterday, I'll say it today.
i predict his reaction would be
'too american'
'too heavy rock'
I'm not so sure.
They've got that bluesy, soul style thing going on. Which wrighty seems to like.
maaaybe
he'd probably like the 1965 album the mostest if he liked any of em
What is the right amount of
"American"? And "Too American'? Examples please.
I don't think Jamie is making that assumption
But wrighty has a noted distaste for music he considers too american. Just as I have a distaste for stuff which is 'too british'. Like the fucking Libertines.
I'm not offended
just intriqued. I'm guessing Southern Rock might be too American?
silly thing is
he likes the byrds and ryan adams and CSNY, all of which i would call veeeery american.
but i think he usually means american modern rock. nickleback. etc.
and he loves Kings of Leon don't he?
Nah.
I love very very American things though. I even like The Black Crowes!
I think when I say too American, I'm thinking American Pie music. And all that evil stuff flying around at the start of this decade. Seriously the ultimate worst music of all time.
But I'm in love with America a bit. If my life goes to plan I'm pretty much definitely going to live there.
PS. I'm on my way to checking out Afghan Whigs. I don't remember having them recommended before.
Ok so Afghan Whigs.
They didn't do it for me on MySpace.
The tunes weren't strong enough and I wasn't really feeling their vibe. Also, I'm not big on that late 80s early 90s sound, productionwise. I don't think its dated too well.
And '66' was really really bad.
Oh well!
And PPS
I think my dislike for Yank music only really applies circa post-Led Zeppelin. They've just sort of gone from really bad to really worse.
They've had a resurgence of brilliance though, around 2001.
Is This It?
Indeed.
Heartbreaker, Gold, White Blood Cells, BRMC...
Nowadays, when American bands are REALLY REALLY doing well, they're miles ahead of British bands who are at their best. But because a band like The Strokes set the standards so high, its a long way to fall when you release something as shocking as 'First Impressions of Earth'.
I listened to that earlier.
My is it aweful.
And no one corrects Jamie Summers that Nickelback are, in fact, Canadian?
Shameful.
I love that record
Why the hate?
Oh that Wrighty
Just don't piss him off.
?
"sit at home and stick a record on..."
You probably wouldn't do that whilst listening to sunn o))). I understand that the right context would be to see them live, possibly whilst wearing rib protectors, because apparently they're quite a heavy band.
I like Altar the best, then White2. I like "N.L.T." from Altar best.
They pretty much ruined my hearing at ATP
I listened to NLT.
I think anyway. Wow. Is that one of your favourite songs?
But yeah, Sunn O)))
They're not the kind of band that work coming out of tinny laptop speakers. I don't love them in the way some types do, they are indeed a bit 'nothing'. But Black One cranked up to full is a pretty exhilarating experience if you're in the mood. It feels so enveloping and oppressive.
Best thing Sunn O))) have ever done in my eyes is the Boris collab. It's loud, noisy and doomy, but accessible enough for you to actually want to play it quite a lot.
On a similar note
my friend sent me the fuck buttons album the other day thinking i might like it. I do not understand the attraction whatsoever. I mean itd be ok if you had it on whilst you did something else maybe...
If you had said any other instrumental/post rock act there
I would understand. But Fuck Buttons are just so completely exciting the whole time. Within the first thirty seconds of that album I've already started punching the air. They're post rock for people who are bored of post rock cliches.
This! They are incredible.
I suppose
i just dont get post rock really. My friend loves it.
I had no idea they were post-rock
I love them.
well whatever they are!
i dont like that sort of thing. I like loud short songs mainly
Fair
game.
I just ordered "Street Horssing"
When I first started posting on DiS Fuck Buttons had a real buzz going, but not much lately. I look forward to checking them out. I haven't heard Sunn O))) either but I like the name, and Sunn used to make killer bass amps.
that where the name be from
If you like street horssing
check out boredoms
boris > Sunn O)))
BORIS>boris though.
BORIS BORIS BORIS
oh they give me joy
yeah so i finally got some BORIS
and i'm quickly understanding what the hype is about :D
Did you play it very very loud?
If not, it's easy to not get it.
yeah they're pretty dire
its basically chris morris music :)
the Nightmare Before Christmas gig
was amazing. It's the closest thing to Spinal Tap i've seen. Creepy smoky intro ruined by loud smoke alarm, band fighting on stage...ace
^this
sounds amazing, is there video?
not that I can find :(
amps fell onto Stephen O'Malley too. Good entertainment! Here is a crap account of it written by some fool
http://www.themelvins.net/forum/index.php?topic=9070.0
plus, mental tree man thing howling into a mic.
It was hypnotic.
Tree Man
was very good to be fair.
I don't think I'd listened to enough Sunn o))) to really get them live at that point
It was all a bit comical though. And they followed Earth, who were astounding, despite me never having heard any of their work. Since then I have acquired 4 Earth albums, each of which is amazing.
I wish I could've made that Altar show they did in London. That would have been just, well, amazing, to be honest.
Earth were so good that day
Absolutely spot on. The extra slide guitar guy made it perfick.
I didn't like Altar very much, but Sunn O)O)O are really good if it's loud enough and they ain't fighting.
I was just lying down, staring at the ceiling and listening the that incredible lazy americana drift
perfect moment of my life.
What i love about Sunn O ) ) ) is that
they make pretty boring/long/drawn out 'spaces' of noise, make 5 copies in each pressing, and then sell them for £349345 a pop.
They're just taking anyone they can along for a ride. It's kinda funny.
srsly?
they dont do it that much
boris are worse.
Boris are worse, yah.
no, BORIS are actually amazing
I just download the limited edition stuff
I got my copies of Black One and White Two for about a 5er each.
Let's see now...
It's Sunday pm. In a few short hours I have to go back to school after my holiday knowning I haven't prepared fully for the upcoming term and I have some very very complicated relationships with a couple of my co-teachers.
I need something to soundtrack the creeping claustrophobic terror that I'm experiencing right now. Ahh... good old Sunn O)))
Bloody teachers.
You're all lazy sods. The only reason you choose your profession is for the lengthy holidays.
Yeah - it is truly amazing
The best thing is, during term time, I don't have to worry about providing entertainment for myself. I don't have to be renting films, making time to see loved ones or going out to gigs because I always bring a few hours worth of marking home to keep me entertained. It's fab.
Having said that, I can mark to Sunn O))) - a very good marking band that one.
Oh how tough. MARKING.
Its not as if you haven't been sat on your backside all day long though. I could understand it if you'd been on your feet, carting stuff about like a workhorse.
Actually I give every member of my form
a horsey ride round the school EVERY DAY. So nuh.
Admit it.
You became a teacher because you enjoy the sight of young legs.
sunn o)))
pronounced sun.
man, so amazing. sin nanna on black one is quite a song.
definitely not to be played on your tinny laptop/computer speakers though.
I'd be willing to bet I've got a better sound system in this PC
than anyone else in the thread. I've got this super soundcard, and these huge monitors at either side of my head, bombarding me with more amazing sound quality than most people get from their stereos.
lol "song"
wut? was that a direct quote?
I didn't have the word "song" in that post.
Sorry, mis-replied.
was a quote from thetreestheyspeak
!
what do you want me to call it....?
yeah but streaming off myspace...
meh...
you need a big fat subwoofer for Sunn O))) though
at the very least. I have a jbl system with two satellites and a dome sub, and that ain't even nearly enough. They're pretty much solely a live band.
That said, I don't think you'd ever like them.
WELL BLOODY ELL.
In order to appreciate them, first I've got to see them live. And secondly, I've got to have a subwoofer.
WELL BLOODY ELL!
Black One has their mantra written on the back
'Maximum Volume Yields Maximum Results'
This really doesn't sound worth the effort.
ATP
...was amazing and the drone mash up of Sunn O))), Earth, Boris and Om was truly amazing. If punishing.
Here's some photos:
http://www.peterguy.merseyblogs.co.uk/2007/12/all_tomorrows_parties_the_nigh.html
If you scroll right down you'll see the 'tree man' people are on about - he looked like a cross between somekind of medieval torture victim and a hedge.
That tree man rules.
He was kinda creepy and unintentionally comical at the same time.
Regardless, I like Sunno o))). Though I really want to hear what they sound like on vinyl.
not in my house
I also have a very nice soundcard and monitors as welll as a vvvveeerrry nice rotel amp.
I am happy.
To be fair,
If you're listening to it on the internet, and thus probably on bog-standard speakers, then they won't sound great.
Listen to their album Black One on a decent stereo, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Yeah, imagine music sounding good through bog standard speakers
Fuck that!
I remember the days before i shelled out on my £930458304983 speaker system - everything sounded SHIT.
OH, YOU'RE SUCH A CARD
some music sounds good whether it's played through £800 speakers or through shitty iBuds, some music is more SOUND than music (y'know, music at a base level is sound innit) and so requires a reasonable level of quality/equipment to be enjoyed properly. Sunn o))) is one of the latter
Basically, i'm not surprised that some people don't like them, that some people might say "this isn't even music". But you're not supposed to listen to it in the same way you listen to riff-chorus indie pop. You're supposed to just fall into it, let it envelop and carry you away in the sound. It's not music in the Radio 2 sense, but it has a purpose in the grand musical spectrum
to be fair
i can appreciate that some people might be interested in this type of thing, but i refuse to believe it's based on anything to do with music. it's a completely different medium, really.
i have to admit all this experimental music doing the rounds lately i find hard time with. I understand it's inovative and inventive, but i could never really enjoy it. but that's just me.
You see I think this is fair enough.
I'd rather people admitted that they didn't like a certain genre than picking on a certain band and slating them.
I know I don't like hip hop (I'm sorry I've tried) so I'm not going to post a thread slagging off Public Enemy. If you don't enjoy drone/ambient metal, why pronounce your dislike of Sunn O))) particularly?
i think
the above is a very valid point.
i personally love sunn O))) but it seems a lot of people take them way too seriously and for me there is something very tongue-in-cheek and theatrical about them which i enjoy.
they are abit pretentious and you have to invest time in what they do, but their records really made me reconsider how i listen to music...black one, white one and the stuff with merzbow are all truely baffling.
its completely pointless listening to them through shitty tinny headphones/speakers or from crappy youtube footage because of the very essence of the sound they produce.
in my opinion they are a fun, provocative group that are really worth the effort...not just a casual judgement via myspace.
I come in peace
and not to slag off sun O))) (i'm not a fan) but i feel the subject of listenting to them on "good speakers" is a non-argument. What on earth did people do in the 50's and 60's when they had their shitty little AM radios. They didnt say "This Stones record is rubbish cos I am listening to it on tinny shitty AM radio speakers and can't make out all the subtlities in the sound."
Perhaps sun o))) records are a densely layered music experience with cuting edge production techniques but I will have to say its not why I am into music. I listen to music cos its a catchy tune or cos i worked at it, it grew on me.
this might be true
but sunn o))) produce music in an era when you can listen to music through big fat speakers. its like saying that the rolling stones would be shit before electric guitars werent invented (this may well not be true, but see my point) Sunn o))) are just doing, what i find to be, intersesting musical stuff pushing the boundaries of what can be done with the equipment that we have, they are named after a brand of amplifier after all (boris used some last night!)
