Does anyone out there agree with me that The Damned were the most underrated of the "original" British punks? Not wishing to court controversy, but listen to their debut LP Damned Damned Damned (which beat the Pistols to the market by the way) and it has energy, excitement, rawness which still sounds great after 32 years. Oh, and a great Stooges cover. We hear so much about The Clash and Sex Pistols but never The Damned. I know who I still listen to the most.

no matter what anyone says i stand by that wholeheartedly.
The Damned
are absolutely amazing.
Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries are some of the finest "punk" records ever made, and even Phantasmagoria, which saw the edge of their goth phase, is bloody good.

i was just about to mention how rad the adverts were. gaye advert, wow. anyway, the damned are pretty damn good, but the clash are the punk band for me...
i love the adverts.
shame the second album was mainly pretty bad (though they did experiment and had some great songs on it)
Damned Damned Damned
God, I had forgotten the Ruts. But onto The Clash, depends how you define what's punk. Most of their stuff was great but more of it's reggae than punk. I guess the definition of punk is a whole new thread. Short, loud and abrasive? Unable to play? Annoying the establishment? Independent labels only (cuts out my own pick The Damned I know)? Are Green Day "real" punks by any of these definitions, or are these definitions wrong?
