People who wear band t-shirts as a fashion statement

as opposed to a declaration of love for the band on the t-shirt.

This really gets on my chopper! A while ago my flatmate - who considers herself a bit of a fashion statement, caught sight of my Sex Pistols t-shirt. When she saw it she let out an excited yelp and said "Oh I've got that t-shirt!"

I think I said something like, nice one! Your a fan then? and obviously it turned out that she wasn't.

Does this get on you tits or is it just me? (that gets on your tits)

Not too bothered to be honest...

... it usually tends to be boring old dadrock like the Pistols / Clash / Maiden etc anyway.

You're not suggesting there should be rules? You can only wear a t-shirt if you've seen the band live and own at least 75% of said band's records etc.

Yeah

I reckon you should, it pissed me off to. Espeically when its Chavs in Ramones t shirts with really wack diamons stuck on the front...

No, I'm merely suggesting that you should at least know who the band are.

Liking them would be a bonus, but not necessary.

You do have

a tendency to get on my tits, but thats my buisness and I'll ask you not to air it in public.

But no, it really does piss me off. That period about 4 years ago when New Look was selling glittery Motorhead and Led Zep T-shirts made me want to burn the shops down......

way worse..

were the MC5 tshirts levi's did. The number of girls I quizzed over those leaving them resenting me and I feeling slightly alone but also slightly better numbered AT LEAST into the tens.

rar.

Don't really care

Very rarely to I know upon seeing someone their motivations behind wearing certain clothes

I once saw

one of those S Club Juniors wearing a CBGBs tshirt on TV. Made me see red.

I think there must be plenty of people who think CBGBs and the Ramones are fashion labels.

Tell me about it. I know someone who actually does

think that The Ramones were a fashion label!!

Are.

:(

so, erm, you should only

wear a cbgb t if you've actually been there?

yes?

Why else would you wear it?

Becasue your a fan of the place? How would you know if you've never been?

Its like wearing a Disneyland shirt without ever stepping foot in it.

I bought a "SAVE CBGB" t-shirt when I was there.

Check out my rad indie cred. Though it does get boring explaining what CBGB is (was) and why it needs (needed) to be saved.

I was chatting to a chick in

skin tight jeans, studded belt, Vans slip-ons and an Iron Maiden shirt outside a pub not so long ago.

I asked her what she thought of the new album. 'Which album?' said she.

Errr...the new Maiden album!

'Oh, I don't like rock music'

Right.

I wish girls would go back to dressing like gypsies or slappers or whatever the trend was a few years back.

ironic?

I love NKOTB, where can I get me a tshirt?

POTD^

"gypsies or slappers "

thats GOLD

seconded.

.............

'Boho chic'

Essentially the same thing.

:D

I remember your band t-shirt thread.

Will have to resurrect that one sometime.

And yet...

my good lady wife dresses 20% hippy to 80% office worker, yet has a secret nu-metal past.

I can understand band t-shirts being confusing in the wrong hands though...

Don't make a sweeping generalisation

about girls wearing band tee shirts. That's horrendous. There are plenty of genuine female rock fans who marry the fashion with the taste. This board can be so sexist and male dominated; makes me balk.

Don't get your knickers in a twist love..........

my anecdote concerns a girl who most certainly wasn't a fan of the RAWK.

Calling someone "love" my strengthens my point, sadly

But just to end the debate, the plural was clearly used.

Oh, I love you cupcake!

That was deliberate.

The funny bit is

you're assuming that I am female.

he said 'people' not 'girls'

equally annoying with either sex. this board can indeed be sexist and male dominated, but this was a pretty shit example to pick.

No

He clearly used the word "girls". Go look.

If you laugh at that

it just proves the lacking confines of your mind, really.

^this

but with Stones/Ramones t-shirts.

I can't believe someone called The Clash 'dad-rock'.

Oh lorrrdddy!!!

Now thats what I am talking about.

That whole message board

is like a parody of the kind of posers you are talking about.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

"luv the t-shirt it relli kwl dunno if ill buy it as it order ova da internet if any1 does get it plz tell me if it comes ok"

that poster has to be a joke

surely no one actually writes like that.

Hehehehe

I was about to paste that very same post as a comical example myself!

If wearing these t-shirts

leads to the wearers actually listening to the band and enjoying the music, then I don't see much problem.

i dont give a shit to be honest

peoples clothes have no reflection on what they are like as people

But that's what

clothes and fashion are supposed to be about (to people who are interested in clothes and fashion) aren't they, reflecting who you are as a person?

maybe youre right

but i still dont care.it doesnt make me think
"oh i wont talk to them they are wearing so and so trousers"

although to be fair

the sooner skinny jeans fuck off the better in my opinion

I do tend to make judgements

about people who dress "scene"... I think I find fashion in general hypocritical, all the women's magazines tell you its all about "expressing yourself", when actually very very few people really dress in a unique, individual way. (Wow, I didn't mean to go on such a rant there!)

I admit I do wear skinny jeans sometimes, they make my legs look better than normal jeans! But skinny jeans on men is horrendous.

i have fat legs

So I agree.

Do you have fat legs to?

not true

if they dress in a way that suggests that they give too much of a shit about clothes, i'm probably not going to like them as much.

if they buy sweatshop clothes and don't at least pay lip service to giving a shit, i'm not going to like them at all.

To me it seems wrong

to wear the t-shirt of a band you don't like or even know.

It only seems to be

the band t-shirts they sell in places like HMV that people wear casually without knowing who's on it, and those t-shirts just look crap anyway... the worst I've seen is the abysmal glittery JUDAS PRIEST t-shirt you could buy in Kays catalogue for £40

loads of people seem to have Ramones tshirts

Twice now i have heard it pronounced "The Ray-mons". The Ramones weren't even good.

It doesn't get on my tits, i just sigh and blink slowly.

I trust other people here

have heard the Tim Lovejoy/Martin Freeman story?

I haven't

What is it?

Just looked it up and it's pretty good

Freeman was being interviewed on a British radio show when he noticed the host, Tim Lovejoy, wearing an oh-so-fashionable t-shirt. After Freeman realised Lovejoy may in fact be suffering from Ramones Syndrome*, the following exchange took place.

Martin: “Is that a Ramones T-shirt Tim?”
Lovejoy: “Er, yes.”
Martin “Do you actually know any Ramones songs?”
Lovejoy: (silence)
Martin: “Can you name two albums?”
Lovejoy: “Er, no.”
Martin: “Thought not.”

Well done Martin Freeman, Tim Lovejoy is a penis.

He is a tosser.

What annoys me about Lovejoy is his obvious belief that all ladies think he is drop dead gorgeous.

Lovejoy

had a live chat show on Sky One for a bit a few years ago and on one show he was wearing a Ramones T-shirt. Martin Freeman was a guest, and the initial exchanges progressed something akin to thus:

Freeman: "Before I start, name ten Ramones songs."
Lovejoy: "...."

"The Ramones weren't even good."

in time, you will realise theyre greatness.

I wish Cannibal Corpse t-shirts were stocked in H&M.

Or the infamous Cradle of Filth 'JESUS IS A CUNT' one.

Hahaha

yes!

or better:

the "Dani Filth Is A Cunt" one

you can buy

diamond (diamontte?) encrusted "vintage" sonic youth t shirts in topshop. they look dead nice.

It's just warholian innit...

... taking something dull like soup cans into art... Taking something dull like boring old tuneless Sonic Youth and turning it into beautiful looking fashion. Pop art man.

Anything you wear in some sort of fashion statement.

In so much as you've made a conscious point to put that on and project that image to the world.

I don't care. If people want to walk about dressed as walking unpaid advertisements for (and in fact people who are paying for the privilege of advertising) bands they've never heard of that's entirely their business.

There was a massive uproar

in the States when Jennifer Aniston's character in Friends wore a MC5 t-shirt in 1 episode. Ha!

Ramones

I was out with a friend at uni once at some indie club or other in Brighton...he was wearing one of those Romanes t-shirts...Hey Ho Lets Go came on....he came out with.."THIS IS GREAT...WHO IS IT!?"

Beckham

in a Cult Electric t-shirt. Oh really David, and what's your favourite tune? Peace Dog or Bad Fun?

HALLLLARIOUS!!

I woulda actually slapped him lol

I don't agree with the 'rule' that

you should only wear a band shirt if you've seen them live at all. You just might not have been able to, for whatever reason..despite loving the band to bits and owning all of their albums

Where is this 'Seen them live'

thing coming from, I didn't say that did I?

I remember that episode

that *was* a really nice top

AIG is the best label for t-shirts and shorts

I Dunno why it is but i seem to get alot of stick for wearing my AIG clothing down the pub. :-)

Actually this thread is spot on!

I saw a guy in a Fruits of the Loom t-shirt.

Turns out he didn't even eat fruit!!! What an idiot!

Then I saw a guy in a Puma tracksuit. he didn't own any kind of big cat.

Aren't clothes and music separate things? If someone in a band wants to make t-shirts then fine but I was under the impression it was fine for people to buy t-shirts 'cos they liked the design rather than any other reason.

If what we wear on our t-shirts has no bearing to what we like.

Then it wont matter if I wear a t-shirt with a swastika on it then?

'd assume it meant you liked the swastiska design

or deliberately wanted to offend people.

It'd mean you were either really naive or a twat but wouldn't be conclusive proof you were a Nazi.

So you draw the inference that someone is a twat from what they wear in that instance

but you cant draw inferences in other circumstances?

Surely wearing clothes is to project something to other people?

You can draw inferences in any circumstances you like

and of course clothes are something to project to other people (I state as much about 12 or 13 posts above this one).

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't draw inferences - just that the inferences you're drawing might be invalid.

As far as I'm concerned if I like a band's music I'll buy a CD, not a t-shirt. How the hell am I going to listen to a t-shirt?

On the other hand I'll buy clothes 'cos I like the design. I don't see it as in any way unreasonable someone can like the design of a t-shirt, or the lyric, logo or slogan printed on it, but not know much about the band.

So you might like what that particular t-shirt projects in its own right, without knowing much about the band. I don't see a problem with that.

Yeah but thats not the issue

i would be pretty sure that the people wearing ramones t shirts just do it because its 'cool'. its nothing to do with the design of the t shirt. I think thats where the issue is, projecting that you like a band simply because everyone else dos, rather than just representing what you do actually like.

Surely that's liking what a particular t-shirt projects in its own right?

I mean even if what it projects is "I'm up to date with the latest fashions" that's liking what a t-shirt projects in its own right.

Yeah but then you get into the arguement

that liking a band shouldnt be about whats fashionable to like, just what you think sounds good, and thats where i think the problem with this whole thing starts.

But you're not liking a band.

You're liking a t-shirt. A t-shirt isn't a band. A t-shirt isn't a band's music. A t-shirt is a t-shirt.

We've already established they don't like the band - that was the original point at the top of the the thread!

Thats where we disagree

some of my t shirts of the band, now as much as i like the look of peter shelly, im wearing the t shirt more because of the band than what they look like.

That's fine if you want to do that.

But that's your decision and I think it's unreasonable of you to expect other people make decisions on clothing for the same reasons as you do.

I bought a puma

so I could wear puma clothing with impunity.

Wouldn't recommend it.
