The great iLiKETRAiNS robbery: band mugged by fake Italian policemen

Thieving cads posing as policemen managed to steal an entire night’s gig takings from iLiKETRAiNS in Italy last week.

The audacious raid happened in Piacenza in the early hours of Sunday morning, where the band were pulled over by an unmarked police car at 2am.

Two ‘police officers’ in full uniform with badges said they were doing a routine check,” the band’s manager, Dominic Brownlow, told DiS, “and then asked if they could see any cash they may have earned at the gig as there were counterfeit notes in the area.

As soon as they saw the money-bag, they grabbed it and ran into the waiting car.

We were pulled over by two guys flashing a police badge at three in the morning on an Italian motorway,” continues guitarist and lead vocalist Dave Martin. “One of them came to the window with a gun in his holster and yelling in aggressive Italian. He asked to see our passports and if we had guns or drugs.

The whole crew was searched and in the ensuing confusion they ran off with the night’s takings. It was a very slick operation and sickening to lose so much cash.

How much did they make away with? €3,000, apparently, which equates to roughly £2,414.34, if this abacus is correct. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined there to be such a demand for gloomy, historically-informed Yorkshire post-rock in northern Italy.

No-one was hurt but pride [was] damaged,” Brownlow continues, getting back to the point. “The police have known about the trick for ages and have never caught them.

Seems we can’t just tarnish the Italians with this, either – a similar thing happened to former Drowned in Sound Recordings artists Jeniferever when they were in Spain late in 2006. Wretches.

iLiKETRAiNS continue their European tour in Frankfurt, Germany tonight - find details of forthcoming shows at their MySpace here.

2 1/2 grand is one night's takings?

i'm in the wrong business..

Minus travel expenses, hotels, food

etc etc = not alot.

and hire a projector

and possibly a dry-ice machine.

Oh no!

Oh God! Where did they take the outfits??? I guess only foreigner can believe the trick tho. It happened to me while in Hungary and none of us had ever seen an Hungarian policeman so... We believed them! HA!

A fantastic scam though.

Screaming at foreign musicians and accusing them of holding drugs.
And easy too, I'd imagine. Follow their van from the show, and pull them over down the road a bit in the middle of nowhere.

Its not going well!

"He asked to see out passports and if we had guns or drugs."

EEE-EEE.

'Thieving cads posing as fake policemen'

I'd of thought posing as real policemen would be more effective, but hey, obviously not!

That is incredibly shit.

Glad nobody was hurt though.

DanBeasy was with you on that one though ^

I can't believe they got away with no drugs... Don't tell me the car was actually clean??

Maybe the band were glad they weren't real and didn't find the half kilo of above the bit you pull down to block the sun from your eyes (what's it called again!!?)

Just to clear a few things up...

The money taken wasn't one nights fee, but the takings from the whole tour up to that point. It was also closer to 2000 Euros, but it pretty much wipes out any profit we may have made on the tour.

We feel pretty stupid to be done by such a scam, but once we'd pulled over the ball was rolling. It all seemed pretty dodgy, but we didn't see too many options out!

Anyway, we're all fine, and putting a brave face on it. It could have been much worse.

Shame about the scam, but hopefully soon it'll be something you can look back on as a minor setback. The TRAiN must trundle on!
