Lou Reed: The person that thinks they'll gain a slightly more favourable cultural cache, and quite likes the self-titled Velvet Underground LP and Perfect Day.
David Bowie: The person who has listened to Hunky Dory, Station To Station and Low and realises that the man, in his given period, is untouchable. (And also produced The Idiot by Iggy Pop.)
That's utter bullshit, you clearly have no idea. MMM is an hour of ecstatic, harmonic beauty, and a work that Lou has repeatedly said he is immensely proud of.
Lou Reed's 1st solo album isn't so great. Transformer 'is' great (thanks to it being produced by Bowie/Ronson?), Berlin is wonderful but Ziggy Stardust is better....
But Bowie wasn't in The VU....
Hmmmm.
I'll call it a draw as I heard dreadful stuff from both.... e.g Bowie's band 'Tin Machine' and Reed's album 'New York'....
I guess it depends if you're comparing their whole musical careers.
Good post, got me thinking on a Sunday morning. :)
This was the hairshirt album he had to make after Metal Machine Music, he promised his lable that he was just going to make a simple rock and roll record- and he did- except for "Kicks" and "Coney Island Baby"
If so easy win to him, if not it will go to Bowie.
I prefer Transformer to any Bowie album but that and Berlin aside Lou's solo career is far to pathy to moun t a serious challenge.
But if you let me have Velvet Underground then it's an easy win they just about invented anything good in music.
Lou has some brillant stuff ones, but Bowie has so many more.. and personally I love the whole Ziggy Stardust thing!
who do you think benefited more from the Waiting For The Man collaboration...?
Reed and VU i got into at a fairly early age and only got into Bowie during my late teens, so gun to the head my heart lies with Lou... need to get into more Bowie i feel
You need Lou Reed to be able to get to David Bowie. Lou is the master. Bowie is the pupil. The VU stuff is untouchable in terms of rock and roll classics and deserves it's place in rock a nd roll history. Lou's solo stuff is patchy as a whole though still some great tracks in there.
As a footnote i cannot believe anybody has ever sat through the whole 4 sides of MMM. It's pish as we say round here.
Just very good at spotting trends.
His two most creative periods were with collaborators (Ronson & Eno). I like Bowie but the question mark remains of how much he bought to the table.
no contest. Releasing a classic album every year for a whole decade, 70-79....and then Scary Monsters in 1980 too. I don't know any other band/artist who has done come close to that.
1. Ronson - The almost immediate drop in quality after Bowie and Ronson seperated. Bowies recorder material took a dip until he collaborated with..
2. Eno - Eno's production skills, innovation can be heard through his pop alubums, ambient records, collaborations and productions.
After they seperated Bowies release quality dropped until...
I've been in love with him since he did that introduction thing on The Snowman with his little blue scarf and twinkly eyes. I can't remember just how young I was but that section of the VHS must have been weary from constant playing and rewinding.
The only album (solo) that Lou Reed has done to rival Bowies 'good' material is Transformer - and this was co-written by Ronson and produced by Bowie (I think).
Bowie
He's got better footwork.
6th round
Knock out
Bowie
easily, Why? Heroes, Low, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Ziggy Stardust. need we say more?
Bowie
He's in Flight of the Conchords therefore wins. :D
My heart says Bowie
however Reed is relatively unexplored territory for me. Berlin is a fucking cracker though. Verdict: indecision.
Yep, Reed has his moments
such as The Transformer album but for every one of those moments, Bowie has an answer and some more!
...

Fine points on Lou Reed
Might I add that anyone seriosuly claiming 'metal machine music' is good is also trying Far Too Hard.
I dunno
Transformer?
Transformer
is an almost perfect album.
I'm going to say "Wagon Wheel"
is the slip on Transformer. Do you have the reissue with the RCA radio spots for the album?
I'v got the standard
reissue with no radio spots. Am listening to it this morning and absolutely lovng it. What a great Sunday morning record!
Lou has said himself
that MMM was kind of a mistake. But it was cool for it's controversy and it paved the way so lot's of other artists could make horrible shit.
Erm...
That's utter bullshit, you clearly have no idea. MMM is an hour of ecstatic, harmonic beauty, and a work that Lou has repeatedly said he is immensely proud of.
MMM is nothing but a wind up.
A wind up that you have clearly been duped by.
Rubbish
That's like asking who do you like more, your Mom or Your Dad? or
I love them both but I have to go with my Mom- David Bowie. But I'm spending summers with Dad- Lou.
Hmmmm.
Lou Reed's 1st solo album isn't so great. Transformer 'is' great (thanks to it being produced by Bowie/Ronson?), Berlin is wonderful but Ziggy Stardust is better....

Coney Island Baby
Is another genuinely brilliant album Reed has done.
"Coney" is killer
This was the hairshirt album he had to make after Metal Machine Music, he promised his lable that he was just going to make a simple rock and roll record- and he did- except for "Kicks" and "Coney Island Baby"
Bowie
Though I should really get more of both
Does Velvet Underground include for Lou?
If so easy win to him, if not it will go to Bowie.
I prefer Transformer to any Bowie album but that and Berlin aside Lou's solo career is far to pathy to moun t a serious challenge.
But if you let me have Velvet Underground then it's an easy win they just about invented anything good in music.
transformer
owes david bowie and mick ronson's input to how good it is. not saying it's their album but it wouldn't be half as good without their production.
You also would never have heard it.
Why would't I have heard it?
Bowie
Bowie's work in the 70s is the single greatest artistic contribution in all of mankind.
Bowie
Lou has some brillant stuff ones, but Bowie has so many more.. and personally I love the whole Ziggy Stardust thing!
who do you think benefited more from the Waiting For The Man collaboration...?
both incredible...
Reed and VU i got into at a fairly early age and only got into Bowie during my late teens, so gun to the head my heart lies with Lou... need to get into more Bowie i feel
if VU don't count
then Bowie wins by a long way. If they do then the decision becomes a lot more difficult, though Bowie might still edge it (because Cale > Reed)
they're both 10/10
but i'm going for Bowie
chicken and egg

Bowie is the pupil!!!!!!
Pish.
It was going to be a tie for me
but then I thought of Bowie in Labyrinth so that decided it. Bowie it is then.
Bowie Is Not An Innovator
Just very good at spotting trends.
His two most creative periods were with collaborators (Ronson & Eno). I like Bowie but the question mark remains of how much he bought to the table.
Strictly speaking
you're correct about db not being a great innovator. However, there is no question how much he "brought to the table."
Bowie wins
no contest. Releasing a classic album every year for a whole decade, 70-79....and then Scary Monsters in 1980 too. I don't know any other band/artist who has done come close to that.
There is a huge question of Bowies input
DAVID BOWEH!
It's a freakeh dream!
Bowie, just.
I've been in love with him since he did that introduction thing on The Snowman with his little blue scarf and twinkly eyes. I can't remember just how young I was but that section of the VHS must have been weary from constant playing and rewinding.
Lou Reed is ace though.
Lou Reed craeted Bowie
well velvet underground did but bowie is still better more depth but vevet underground better then Bowie
Tough, very tough!
Love them both!
Hmmmmm sorry but I am going to sit on the fence as I really cannot decide!
Bowzer
Bowie
the buldge wins.
Bowie in my opinion.
The only album (solo) that Lou Reed has done to rival Bowies 'good' material is Transformer - and this was co-written by Ronson and produced by Bowie (I think).
