Are there any metal bands who write good lyrics?

I do like metal but I have grown accustomed to disengaging my brain in terms of its lyrical output and concentrating on the music. Even discounting bands that are over enamoured with their silly be-as-evil-as-possible cliché stuff I don’t think I have ever thought to myself ‘wow, how insightful’ when listening.
So... are there any bands actually saying anything interesting?

or Rock in general...

increasingly it's impossible to find a riff alongside bearable lyrics.

Lesbian don't...

I'm seeing Lesbian in Manchester next week . They are a heavy metal instrumental post rock type band from Seattle and the one thing they don't have is lyrics;-)
Heavy riff laden instrumentals bit like Pelican, I suspose, but sorry no proper lyrics.

is that ^ the best jag ever?

I like pelican, where are they playing?

Anal Blast

Their lyrics remind me of the blues. See for yourself:

Fell in love with a girl at the coffee shop
Rachel was so beautiful
"…now she's dead" The paper read
severed flesh, laceration, degradation
pleading for me to let her go
sho told me no
can't handle rejection
all my crimes are perfection
charmed your pants off
now you're horrified from my many personalities
this one, a sadistic rapist
the one before, college student nerd, ridden with acne
Pretending to be your tutor, necrosadonomitry
I taught you how to die
Penetrated, before and after death
I still jack off on the maggots of your exhumed remains,
The alarm goes off
I awake
From a beautiful dream
The exhumed remains
Of that weed
I excavated
Got me baked
I must've passed out
Rachel is pissed
I had to give her a lesson last night
Instead got higher than light
My shorts are stuck to my dick

^^ Lesbian are at

The Star & Garter, Fairfiled St just near Piccadilly Station, 15/04/08.

65dos are playin that night

65dos???

Type O Negative

Christian Women

Type O is metal with Satire

Carcass

write good lyrics

I don't really think lyrics are that important, they certainly aren't when it comes to metal . Who wants some clean singing fanny going on about their feelings when you can instead listen to some primordial roar/bark?

Mastodon

zing!

^seconded

Any band in any genre who can compose a concept album based on 'Moby Dick' are obviously winners lyrically.

Anyway, depends how broad your definition of 'metal' is: I love Converge - if you read the lyrics and like them then that's great, if not you have zero chance of making most of them out so you can make up your own.

In my head, the chorus to homewrecker goes:

'That was my pie!
That was my pie!
That was my pie!
Why?
Why?
Why did you eat my pie?'

no heroes...

some guy has made a youtube thing trying to deciper the lyrics to the title track including gems such as
"we stole a tape-roll, we don't need alf!"
etc

^Seconded.

No, really. Mastodon.

Shit.

Thirded.

chuck schuldiner

wrote good lyrics I think (later albums anyway)

Type O Negative

Some great lyrics. Very amusing. Mastodon for sure have some good lyrics to match the musicianship.

I always

Liked ETID's lyrics, singer is an ex English teacher, so has some interesting stuff to say!

Also most hardcore or punk bands usually have something good to say and some mint lyrics.
Always dug Modern Life Is Wars lyrics, check em out!

Pick a song, any song. Really. They've all great lyrics.

More blues-rock than metal these days though.
