Portishead’s Adrian Utley is angry that his band’s new album has been leaked online.
Not due for release ‘til the 28th of April, Third is nevertheless available now from all good file-sharing websites.
"We're definitely pissed about it. But I suppose there's nothing you can do about it,” the guitarist told MTV, before his despair drove him to divide the world’s population in two.
“You can only hope that it's not going to fuck everything up for you, because I think, in this world, there are downloaders and people who buy. I don't know if you can convince downloaders to buy.”
Which are you? Portishead aren’t swimming in money, you sods.
"If we don't sell records, we can't make any more records," Utley explained. “We're just not rich people."
Is that a threat? Quite possibly. Heed.

Adrian Utley lives just up the road from me
in a nice house.
Having said that, I think it's wrong if people just download with the intention of never buying anything. I do.
yawn
i wonder how many have downloaded the album and are forking out £35 to see them play live?
^
this. Live appeal and ticket pricing more than compensates them.
how would you like it....
if your boss turned round to you and said "i'm not gonna pay you for your work this month, don't worry, i'll pay you next month?"
you'd be properly fucked off and rightly so.
tell me what's the difference between not paying for recorded work just because you'll pay to see a band play live and this. someone has spent months/years working on a recording, surely they should be paid for it.
what about all the labels that spend all their money on recording costs, manufacturing & marketing? most of the stuff you download is not put out by universal but some small label paid for out of someones own pocket. these labels will be few and far between soon.
April Fool!
He actually love love loves downloaders. Cheers Adrian!
I laughed out loud
!
I think Third is actually the first album I've illegally downloaded
and I'm certainly buying it anyway, I just wanted to get used to the songs before I see them on tour. Whether I'm a typical downloader I'm not sure, though, so I can see why he might be worried.
DIDN'T YOU READ HIS COMMENTS
PEOPLE WHO DOWNLOAD AREN'T PEOPLE WHO BUY. THE WORLD IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE. NO MORE MUSIC FOREVER!
I downloaded
and I will DEFINITELY buy. Am looking forward to it - on vinyl, lights off, full volume, am gonna keech ma pants
ah generalisations don't you just love em
All illegal downloaders are paedophiles, they will steal your job, be a burden on the NHS, move into your street with their caravans and claim benefits. SCUM!!!
Good album though!!
Let me see...
... approx. £140 to see them at ATP (okay I admit that I would have been going to ATP anyway but hey ho)
£40 for a deluxed boxed edition of the album
Almost £40 including booking fees to see them at Hammersmith
I think I'm spared the guilt at wanting to hear their new record as quickly as I can via a naughty download.
"We're just not rich people"
yeah right.
From the Observer Music Monthly article in Feb
"The home studio on the top floor of Portishead guitarist Adrian Utley's five-storey Georgian house in the classy district of Kingsdown supplies an abundance of circumstantial evidence as to how that decade might have been spent."
Wish I was 'not rich' enough to just spend the last 10 years making an album in my home studio in my 5 storey Georgian house...
^ lol
way to cite precedent!
he's right to be pissed
if i'd spent 10 years mking an album, only to have it leaked at a degraded sound quality to a load of cheapskates who will probably not give it as much attention as it deserves before "moving on" to something else long before it actually gets released then yeah, i'd be pretty pissed off too
And you lot can go on and on about how you'll buy it when it comes out or go to see them live, but the former are very much in the minority of downloaders, and the latter are trying to justify an essentially immoral act
Not that i want to get into this discussion YET AGAIN, but leaks are killing music and seriously fucking about with musicians. Don't get pissy when an affected artist declares themselves upset
hey
i dont disagree with the general jist of his point. Of course he has the right to be pissed. I was just saying he certainly won't lose any money from my pre-release d/l, so his off-the-cuff generalisation was (predictably) off-the-mark.
in general
I have a lot of sympathy for that point of view. However, I think Portishead themselves probably won't do as badly out of this as perhaps they fear, not least because:
i) the album's so good
ii) many of Portishead's fans are slightly older and thus the sort of people who still buy CDs.
I think he's right.
I think he has a point, not everyone who makes music is Bono like rich...ok he has a decent house and studio but he's a musician,he is allowed these things.
I love how some people, not all I'm not gonna brand everyone in the same way here, think music should be a free commodity .If you took 2 years of your life to do something would you just give it away for free. You don't go work and expect not get paid do ya.
Speaking as a musician, yeah it should always be about the music but if its your only source of income at least give us a chance to earn a living just like anyone else.
I walk past his house
everyday on my way to work. It's beautiful. He'll need to sell 100.000+ albums to pay for the heating bills alone.
FACT!
And yes, I've downloaded it but fully intend to get the vinyl which should pay for a few hours worth of heating.
is it any good?
i dont want to waste my time buying it, if it's cack?
thoughts?
it's the best thing I've heard so far this year
(IMHO)
IT IS A GREAT ALBUM
i just hate whiny artists though who are struggling. nonsense i was in a band and i held down a job as well, yes it would be nice to not have to work and to focus on a hobby such as music making, but reality check people you are paying for someone to have a great lifestyle.
all the musicians who moan about 'theft' and being unable to pay for their creations would still be making music if they were on an average wage.
it is time that these artists and performers (including sports celebrities) realised the privelaged position they are in and stop crying about it!!!
you're the whiny one
"i was in a band and had to work so why don't they? WAH WAH WAH"
hmmmm. download it and see
....
They should have...
done a Radiohead
I think you're right
it does seem like a bit of an old-fashioned release campaign overall; tour to promote the album rather than album to promote the tour etc.
Not sure what to do...
Downloaded it cause frankly couldn't stand reading about it and not hearing it.
Subsequently ordered the $90 box set...
My age dictates I still believe artists need to get paid...
I am an old f**k! :-)
