These are two bands I hear about a lot on here, and they sound like the kind of thing I would be interested in. Are they any good? Where to start? And is there anywhere i can hear either of their stuff online (myspace etc)?

the microphones

have the glow part 2, which heard through nice headphones on a rainy day is spiritual.
and the thermals, ive only listened to the body... and no culture icons, but they seem a pretty vital poppy punk rock band. takes me back to being 15 but ina good way

microphones...

http://www.myspace.com/elverumandsun

they are great.

thermals have maybe one song which they recycle as far as ive ever been able to tell, less great.

both are good

The Thermals are a pop-punk band and basically have one song. Fortunately it is the most euphoric, catchy and brilliant song ever.

arguably they have a second song

which is a slightly slower version of the other song

yes,

but its the same chord pattern, just slightly slower and with a minutely altered strumming pattern

which one song?

because i LOVE quite a few of thier songs

I don't know who the Microphones are

but The Thermals are one of my favourite bands. The Body, The Blood, The Machine is a fucking brilliant album in all respects.

Saying they have one song is like saying Eighties Matchbox only have one song. Take that how you want.

they do

but it doesn't matter one bit. They are also one of my favourite bands. I don't want them to start experimenting with Afrobeat flourishes.

So where would I start with the Microphones?

The stuff on their myspace sounds rather spiffing! And what's the difference between them and Mount Eerie?

mt eeire is slower as far as i know

i have the record mt eerie and its good, but lacking in songs.
the glow pt2 has songs and post rockery. so its ace

mount eerie is later stuff

its just one guy really. he changed the name after a few albums.

start with the glow part 2

the glow pt 2 is supposed to be their best

but I dont like it that much but I cant think of one to recomend above it as I think he has so many amazing songs but they tend to be scattered over many albums, I find myself listening to ive in japan the most.

theres alot of crossover between the two projects so its hard to really say but I think the difference between them and mount eerie is that mount eerie is more philosophical/less personal lyric wise and musically more sparse and kind of spooky sounding, he stopped recording at dub narcotic instead going to his house in the woods with an 8 track and uses a cardbord box and water bottle for drums (whereas in the microphones he was the best drummer in the world when he wanted to be).

re. The Microphones

The Glow Pt. 2 is a masterpiece, and Mount Eerie is fantastic as well. Great lyrics and wonderful melodies.

the thermals are great

euphoric catchy punky fun, plus they embrace religion and stuff

'The Glow Pt. 2'

...is easily in my top 10 albums ever. I've heard nothing like it ever before. The 'Mount Eerie' album is great too, the earlier ones are cool, but sometimes sound a bit like Grandaddy.

they dont embrace religon

sounds more like they are saying how phucked up it us to me
havent we had this discussion?

They're probably abit too folksy

and earnest for your tastes but the Microphones (& Mount Eerie) are probably my favourite band of all time.

They're basically just Phil Elvrum and a bunch of the usual K Recs people. They released a bunch of albums, of which the Glow Pt. 2 is the most famous and probably best, then in 2003/4 Phil went all spiritual hung out in Norway for a while and changed his bands name to Mount Eerie and released a bunch more records which are generally weirder and more stripped down.

You can check loads of amazing live bootlegs here:

http://mounteerie.trivialbeing.net/audio.php

Of which I particularly reccomend 'Live in Dundee', 'Live at the Tokyo Rose' & 'Live at the Vera Project' as they feature his best songs. Although the live stuff is very different as its mostly just Phil where as the records have real depth of production with loads of awesome drones, amazing drums and stuff.

^Useful!

Thanks!

live at the vera project

is my favourite bootleg, I probably prefer it to most of his albums

Just listening to the Thermals myspace

They're pretty ace. I see what everyone means when they say they only have one song though.

The Thermals are great

All the songs sound the same at first, but then you realise they're all amazing pop-punk ditties.

Thermals are also great, especially when watching football in winter. Tuesday nights. Jumpers for goalposts. Bovril and whippets.

i still only have the first Thermals album

are the later ones more polished? i think what i really dig about it is the "recorded in a skanky basement" thing...

yes

but the songs, sorry song, is more consistent too. The latest one is the best I would say.

im listening to the thermals now

they seem really quite good

The Thermals

are the second worst live band I have ever seen, luckily they were a support act when I saw them last year.

Was that with The Cribs?

I had to pay loads for a ticket, just because I wanted to see The Thermals. It was worth it - they were amazing. Shame noone else seemed to care.

Left before The Cribs started - the place was full of beered up tossers and barely dressed teenage girls.

Mount Eerie by The Microphones

is one of my all-time favourite albums.

Could someone

Please describe these bands music in one sentance, so that I can be filled with enough excitement to warrant me remembering to have a look when I get back to my myspace friendly connection at home.

:

The Thermals go right to your head; The Thermals have sex in your bed; Everything in circles.

Noones having sex in my bed without my say so.

Not even the Thermals.

Cheers!

That warrents enough excitement for me to blah blah blah etc!
