Unlike many of their contemporaries, The Duke Spirit found themselves thrust into the limelight without having to do the hard work of relentless touring and building up a fan base beforehand. While this may have given them an advantage in getting a record deal and countless (and, more often than not, so-so) reviews of their records, it has also in some ways proved to be their downfall. Despite the fact all the ingredients appear to be right, something is distinctly lacking here.

Charismatic front woman Liela Moss obviously isn't put off by the fact she's not the only celebrity Moss on Indie Street these days, as her breathy, half-Nico / half-Siouxsie Sioux vocal is undoubtedly the highpoint once again. Occasionally, the accompanying music also manages to live up their singer's audaciously high expectations, but repeatedly the ostentatious build-ups and pontificated lead-ins turn into proverbial damp squibs, leaving the listener wanting – no, demanding – a hell of a lot more.

In the two years since their debut long player Cuts Across The Land emerged, it's obvious that The Duke Spirit have at least made every effort to come up with a winning formula to match the hype. The fact they drafted in Queens Of The Stone Age cohort Chris Goss to steer them on and re-located to California for long periods in an effort to beef up their sound suggests the band were only too aware of the faults on that first record.

There's no doubt, too, that in places they do pull off fireworks with some aplomb. Current single 'The Step And The Walk' is all Can-style guitar loops punctuated by Moss' banshee howl, her emotive plea of "I'm moving to the end of your loving" managing to sound both fragrant and menacing in equal measures. Likewise, 'Neptune's Call', the album's penultimate track, is a justifiable reason to persevere with the record until its close. The backing is more sinister, possibly as a result of the involvement of Goss, and once again Moss gives a provocatively stunning vocal performance that urgently questions, "You're not gonna lose me, are you?"

Too often, though, this record slips into a comfort zone that, while making it impossible to generally dislike, renders it hard to get excited about. For a band whose promise has been talked about for nearly half a decade now, Neptune only delivers half the goods. The most worrying thing from The Duke Spirit's point of view is whether anyone will care about them enough enough another two years down the line for album three to be received with any kind of fanfare.

haven't heard this yet

but i don't think you can say that wanting to collaborate with another person shows that they thought their first album was shit.

It's definately 6/10

Too many of the songs are just completely uninspired, and i'd put 'Neptune's Call' among them. Having said that i like the more echoy pop songs like 'Sunken Treasure' and the single as u say, and 'This Ship Was Built To Last' is very good also, but there are just so many better bands out there i really don't see them having much wider success and as you say its hard to see if that many people will care.

since their 'roll spirit roll' EP/mini-album

the Duke Spirit have been a bit disappointing.
They promise but never deliver...

have to say

i havent heard this yet. but ill get it, and their first album, i love it. really should have broken the charts a bit more.

and they did tour before the first record. they werent all over the place exactly, but saying they didnt work very hard is a bit unfair.

You know what?

You rate the Beatles a 6, Pavement and the Pixies a 5, and NIRVANA a 2. You have no business contributing anything to any music site that reviews rock bands because you don't know a thing, not one thing about rock music. Most sites would be embarrassed to have anyone contributing to their site who rated all of those bands as you did, but DiS has no standards.

Yeah ! The taste police is back !

Not liking a band doesn't mean you can't appreciate their importance or meaning.
It's not because I give 9 to a band and 2 to another than I think than the first one is more significant. Just than the music is more pleasing/important to ME !

Just one example : I would love the Pixies if only I could stand his voice which make them unlistenable to me. I give them a rating only so they won't appear anymore in 'My recommendations', a feature that was helpful a long time ago.

Congratulations on reading 6 pages of boring rating and try to remember sometimes that we're just giving opinions. I don't pretend to have knowledge or taste. I just like what I like.

As for the Duke Spirit : I've got most of what thev've released, have seen them live and can say I think they've never fulfilled their potential.

I'm checking out.

"More often than not, so-so reviews"? Check metacritic.com. The first album generally received favorable reviews, one of which was from Pitchfork (who rarely give any real rock band anything over a 6). So this review makes it official: Other than the message boards, this site sucks. The Duke Spirit are one of the best bands around, but this crappy site would rather hype weak dance punk clones like Foals, bloated prog rock bilge like the Mars Volta, and white boy reggae like Vampire Weekend. Whatever...

"You rate the Beatles a 6, Pavement and the Pixies a 5, and NIRVANA a 2."

Really? Where? I think I'd get down to Specsavers on your way out Mr Hann...

Was talking to Lyle

I like to share the hate.

Average record gets average rating.

Can't say fairer than that really.

long live the duke spirit!

i dont give a fuck what number reviewer gave, brilliant band.

the record

gets better with repeated listens - took me about a week and now there are about 4 songs which I think are stunners. There are some mid-par tracks here, but they're not offensively mid-par, and kinda sound like Mazzy Star or Cowboy Junkies.

I think..

its more than a 6. I have to be honest I loved Cuts Across the Land, would prob give it a good 8 or 9. This hasn't lived up to the first album I don't think, but is probably worth a 7 and a half or so. There are a few excellent songs, and the rest is just quite good.

Although

I have noticed DiS reviewers do seem to be incredibly hard to please!
