which is awful. i'm gonna watch Cries and Whispers tonight :-(
without him the sort of cinema i love (Leigh, Allen, Von Trier) just wouldn't exist.

i just ordered

the seventh seal, out of respect. and to watch it.

did you see the documentary on him a bit ago?

his life on faro, it seemed a fantastic way to live out his days.

i may dig out my copy of the seventh seal tonight.

:(

i was talking about persona just last night.

actually that's probably the only bergman film i've ever seen. shame on me. what should i watch??

and on friday night in tommy flynn's i said:

"some of the girls here look like they could be in ingmar bergman films"

By far my favourite director.

I feel really sad. Everyone should watch Fanny and Alexander.

.

Cries And Whispers
The Seventh Seal
The Virgin Spring
Through A Glass Darkly
The Silence
Persona
Hour Of The Wolf
Shame
Fanny and Alexander
Wild Strawberries
Smiles Of A Summer Night
Autumn Sonata

that's for starters...

bf

Poor Ingrid.

I definitely would have, when she was younger of course

my friend

is going to be gutted. I've (quite shamefully) not seen any of his films. Will try and see 7th seal this week, now it's been re-released and all.

sad news

.....and mike reid seems to be getting all the press attention.

I;ve only watched 7th seal.Really enjoyed it. Not sure which one to watch next.

not unexpected

but so so so sad.

Maybe would feel less horrible if Bergman's films didn't make death so unbearably depressing.

Amazing person though - Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries are two of my most favourite films ever. It's scary to think his films could be any more depressing, and I guess now they will be...

I felt so so so horrible

when I woke up this morning and found out.

And I don't even feel that connected to him or his work, I've only seen The Seventh Seal, which was amazing...

:( :( :(

I don't think the death of someone I've never met has ever hit me in the same way. Possibly Brando.

Erm its not like it was a sudden young death

I think you have to realise sometimes that this is what happens when people get old.

perhaps we need it to be like brave new world

where kids watch oldies dying in hospital to get used to the idea, that and start sexual experimentaion at 8 or whatever.

I'm not saying it was unexpected.

Well, it was in the sense I didn't exactly consciously expect him to die, but he was very old...

Obviously he had a long life, but it's still really horrible.

nestor, death is the only inevitability in life

the means may be horrible but the act is always gonna happen.

Well, yes...?

Not a big surprise

He hasn't made that many great films lately, and he was pretty damn old.

I'm going to see "The Seventh Seal" at Curzon Soho tonight at 19:30!

Never seen Bergman at the cinema before. He's the man.

HOw dare you

but yes.

I wish Leeds had Seventh Seal on re-release

Hyde Park is usually great for that kind of thing.

i know but...

if you take a step out of leeds i'm sure there'll be something here: http://tinyurl.com/33glsv

plus the curry is better.

Bradford?

Hmm. I don't think I can afford it.

I'll just rent Wild Stawberries or Cries & Whispers or something tonight.

I can recommend...

"Ansiktet" ("The Face" or "The Magician").

The full version of "Fanny & Alexander" is his masterpiece though, I reckon.

:(

A Shame...

Yes he was old, and yes he wasn't working any more, but it still makes me sad when a great artist dies. His films are breathtaking, they constantly reveal hidden depths when you re-watch them. Bergman and Vonnegut in the same year - tragic.

Hopefully though the BBC will put a Bergman season on - that isn't on freeview! Either that or HMV can reduce the prices of his DVD's... Since the demise of Fopp I've only been able to get cheap World Cinema from Ebay...

Thanks...

...But I already have it! I suffer from the plague of collectors with very little money - I own most of the DVDs that are often cheap!

Ok

I was thinking of buying the complete Bergman dvd box set. Then I might sell my other Bergman dvds off. Will let you know!

I was just thinking about Bergman

a week or two ago, thinking that he would probably die soon.

I've only seen The Seventh Seal. For me it was over-serious and not the exhilarating experience that some critics have said it is.
