and hated it. I played it again and loved it. I guess it's my definition of a "grower".
In fact, I recently played it (and loved it) but was thinking he was a band that just got lucky.
Like it was just a bunch of noodling shouty nonsense ... that somehow by the mysteries of the universe was brilliant that had nothing to do with the band themselves.
the best "post-rock" album i've heard, which puts it a tiny notch above Spirit of Eden, a couple of notches above "Lift Yr Skinny Fists.." and a country mile above anything in the Mogwai canon (Tortoise albums are exempt)
i think it's excellent, but for me it doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the 'post rock' bands. there's something uniquely sinister about it, and it doesn't rely on the reverb/delay twinkle followed by the big overblown musical 'splurge' dynamic that make a lot of post rock bands sound exciting at first but sort of predictable and cliched with repeated listenings and in context with all the other bands with the same tag.
a classic, 10/10 record - there aren't many of them, BUT it will never have the impact now it would have done if you hadn't heard all the bands that have copied them.
Good Morning Captain is the greatest way to end a record that I have heard. The last minute and a half makes me want to smash things and hide under the bed, at the same time. Never gets old.
Much more minimal. It seems to take exactly the same route as Spiderland, building slowly, down to the epic ending, but everything is quieter, more grown up somehow. Don't have too high an expectation and you'll adore it. It's taken me years to really "get" it, if I can say that without sounding like an arse.
yes
so much so that some bastard stole my 12" ages ago and wont give it back :-(
its absolutely fucking brilliant
you should have bought it a long time ago
I played it once many years ago

okaaaay
i loved it first time i heard it. do i win a prize?
You, sir
are way cooler than me. The effects of *that* prize aren't as immediate as a shiny new car, but it's longer lasting. So you've got that going for ya!
no
washers good though
meh
Even if you hate it, it's a record you *have* to own. It's mandatory. Your indie cred is at stake. ;)
it's my dad's favourite album
it's not bad. breadcrumb trail, nosferatu man and good morning captain are stunning - the rest fairly forgettable
don, aman
and washer get stuck in my head regularly.
its fucking incredible

basically, its rules big time
its def up there
but Ocean Songs still wins :D
i don't know what that is..
minus 10 indie points for me
Dirty Three
well thats if you class them as post-rock. some people do. so they win.
I got this
I like it a lot. I've never been a big fan of violins though.
you'll find that it
becomes worryling addictive
I like Mogwai. Sorry
I also like Explosions In The Sky. I like post rock a bit too much rly.
well.
you should cream yourself over Spiderland then
on record, average to dull
live, really fucking ace
might get a tick for their DLB if this is really that great
tis
Don't get Tweez though
it sucks.
they're boring live
When I saw them live it was like listening to the record..
I was hoping for something a bit more exciting.
they were really, really great at primavera!
255
This
made me think they'd be incredibly boring live

i enjoy
slint live.
Wrong way round, is that
Yup, Slint are teh dull live
to answer the question

if you love it
please buy my spare ticket to see them play it in august, as i want to go to glasgow to see them there instead. thanks!
I....
...rank this as one of my top 5 albums of all time...
Wonderfully wonderful..
It's
very good in a wonderfully non obvious way.
the recently reissued For Carnation compilation is also good.
I like it. However the Slint E.P shits all over it FROM A GREAT HEIGHT.
Get that NOW.
NOW, YOU FUCK!

The 2nd track on that is ace..
the drum sound is teh awesomeness.
I can confirm
it is not all its cracked up to be
awesome

did
I just contradict myself? Wait, no.
No.
yes
It most definitely is. It's absolutely spectacular. Prefer Godspeed though really.
The For Carnation (McMahon's other band) are worth a good listen as well.
yyyyy
.
I really need to have a listen to this.
It isn't nearly as good
but still very good.
