Favourite Worst Nightmare: unsurprisingly set to be 2007's biggest seller...

Sheffield's popular indie-pop types Arctic Monkeys look set to score 2007's biggest-selling LP with their second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare. So far, anyway.
The album shifted 85,000 copies on its first day of release, on Monday, and could reach a quarter of a million sales by the time the chart's compiled on Sunday. There or there abouts.
The album is currently outselling the rest of the top 20 on the albums chart, combined.
The band's debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, sold 363,735 in its first week. HMV's Gennaro Castaldo has commented:
"It was always going to be next to impossible to match or beat the phenomenal first day sales of Whatever People Say I Am..., but coming this close is a fantastic result which underlines the band's status as the UK's number one rock act.
"People are buying this album not because of the media hype, but because it's had great reviews and they can't wait to hear it. It is easily the fastest selling album of the year to date."
At the moment, every single track from the album is in the top 150 of the singles chart. True fact!
143,000...
...by Wednesday evening. But the thing that's really gonna get the haters out in force on Sunday is the very real possibility that the band will have EIGHTEEN of their songs in the Top 200 singles chart. Oh dear.
Hit post too soon there :S
On the day we see The Cooper Temple Clause split up, we also see this.
It's depressing.
I couldn't agree more
Pretty much sums up how everything is fucked right now.
Ha every track!
That's quite interesting.
best thing ever-centric:
"At the moment, every single track from the album is in the top 150 of the singles chart. True fact!"
They could have released
an eleven-track album of forty minute ambient, feedback-drenched drones, featuring Alex Turner doing a poo in Matt Helders' mouth, while Jamie Cook beats the crap out of Kurt Cobain's dead body as artwork, and it would still have gone to Number One.
Maybe.
"not because of the media hype, but because it's had great reviews"
erm, aren't they quite the same thing? maybe?
nah
it can also work with terrible reviews.
see also Brass Eye Paedophile Special
And magazines and papers
have been filled with articles going crazy over the fact that the album is coming out at all, nevermind how it sounds.
LOL
Yes. Surely they are. Unless "media hype" also includes adverts and competitions and shit.
i dunno
remember when the artwork for this was released and several places went "LOOK! EVERYONE! ARTWORK!"
thats media hype without a review.
Not quite what happened.
Several places went "LOOK! EVERYONE! TRULY AWFUL SHIT ARTWORK!"
The album isnt bad
and sure to be better then any other contenders for best selling album of 07
hah true
but.. you know.. i don't see anyone writing big news stories about the artwork for the new Fountains of Wayne album, so there has to be some degree of hype somewhere without the need for a good review.. or even a good ARTWORK review, it seems!
Same thing happened to...
...Steve Brookstein, funnily enough. And he went on to sell shedloads of his second album. Oh, wait a minute. Eventually, hype won't work, a crap artist/band gets found out, usually by their second album. The reason this hasn't happened here is FWN fucking hits the spot, spectacularly.
Well, fair enough
It may not be my favourite album of the year (although that too was released this week) but it's bloody good. If this sells more than anything else it gives me some hope...
it's just a shame...
that it's not that good. give people the summer and everyone will be saying it.
Not even....
...everyone on here will be saying it. Next!
it needs time
at the moment I quite liked it.
but I quite liked razorlight's new one at first.
and I didn't really like the killers' new one that much.
I'm waiting a few weeks before I pass judgement.
but is that every track from the new album, or from wahtever people say...?
:-S
lets be honest
even if it was a blank cd people would have brought it. people suck
Let's be honest....
...your 'theory' is the only thing that's sucking donkey balls on here.
the new one
presumably!
although it would be funny if Worst Nightmare was pipped to the #1 spot by the first album.
Grrrrrrrrr
I hate this band! Damn them.
Are you descended from...
...King Canute? Resistance is totally futile, for the good of your health, let it lie.
Why are you SO pro-Arctic Monkeys?
I mean, fair enough, I quite like em and I think they're a good band.
But it's also pretty obvious they're WAY too overhyped and a lot of their sales have been on hype alone..
So, why the huge defensive streak, drownedinvitriol?
doesn't hide the fact the album is a right old dog of a record
200,000 odd may have bought it - but that's gonna leave a lot of disappointed people. The record is very dull. the clever lyrics and tunes that made the band so appealing first time around are nowhere to be seen. apart from Flourescent Adolescent which sounds like George Formby gone electric. disappointing
