Ear plugs!

Has any of you had any experience with ear plugs at gigs? Can you tell me what I should look for when buying some?

I've never had problems at all with my ears, but in recent months I have had to call my doctor on numerous times to have eardrops, as post-gigs I wake up with watery liquid seeping out, and some swelling. Not nice!

I went to see Josephine Foster on Saturday, and remarkably woke up the next day with the same problems.... and she's all folky!

I've got Daniel Johnston at the weekend, and Joanna Newsom just after that, so I'm getting a bit concerned.

What should I be looking out for?

.

my brother uses them all the time as he gets bad ears.
There's no exact science about it, any old ear plugs will do and it's easy enough to adjust them to let in as much low/high frequency as you need.

To be honest

if you are at a folk gig (ie, not a loud rock show) then I don't know if volume is the problem.

Unless the doc said that of course.

Do you stab yourself in the ears whilst asleep?...it could be that.

I use

the er20's from here (look under musicians hearing protection)

http://www.hearingprotection.co.uk

I had terrible troubles with my ears - shooting pains and tinnitus for days after gigs etc. Not had a problem since i started wearing them.

Cost about 15 quid inc delivery direct.

i just use cheap boots disposable foam ones

they seem to do the job

Same 'ear

Sorry!

Yes I use the cheap ones from Boots (earfit I think), they seem to do the job, they took a while to get used to as it felt I was missing bits. But it's worth it not to have loud ringing for days after, and seeing as I get mild tinnitus all the time I don't want it to get worse!

Ordered myself a pair of er20s

after reading the various comments here. Hopefully they'll arrive in time for Pelican next Wednesday!

They did

and they're brilliant! Just as well as These Arms Are Snakes sounded as if they were bloody loud!

Get a pair

of attenuated ones, they're specially designed to let in a wider range of frequencies than the bog standard cheap ones, hence you wont lose the bottom end but you will get reduced volume. I think you can pick them up reasonably cheaply from richer sounds. In fact i need to investigate this myself, i've been meaning to buy a pair for ages myself

ahh

those ones that kooze mentioned above are the ones that i'm thinking of. Oh and it appears that its high end that gets extra roll off, not low end, oopps

argh

*krooz even

Weird

I was gonna post about this. Been without a decent pair of ear plugs since december and was worried about Wolf Eyes next week.

Will check out those er20's recommeneded below.

...

I've been using a generic pair of swimmers ear plugs for a couple of years now, thanks to a combination of a 3-day deafening after a gig and a doomy article about hearing loss. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

It was also behind my decision to stop wearing in-ear phones. I use closed-cup only now.

Thanks all..

..There was some Spanish guy who joined Josephine Foster, and did some heavy (and loud) guitar work for a number of songs. I think that's what did it for me.

I read this that someone posted elsewhere, and it made me realise that I should be doing something about it now, rather than just relying on eardrops for days after:

"Coming home after the kick ass Kylesa show I realize it. It is back again, but different this time. For the last year or two I've heard a buzzing in my ears after shows. Sort of like a faint gang of bees just off in the distance. It stays with me till I fall asleep and is usually gone by morning.

That night the bees were gone, replaced by what I can only imagine is sound that people call ringing in the ears. A constant high pitch, just loud enough to notice, that doesn't go away. It sucked. When I laid my head on the pillow I was nervous it might be with me come morning.

For twelve plus years I've been consistently going to shows. It is impossible to come up with a total number, but plenty of 'em. Lots of punk bands playing loud in small spaces and myself jammed as close to them as I could get. And I can count on my hand the times I actually put something in my ears. I have never worn earplugs. I hate the way they muffle everything. Bands just don't sound right through a layer of foam or toilet paper. Plus I don't like the feeling of having something in my ear. Sometimes I would put them in and then take them right out after the first song. I've even had a top notch pair of earplugs given to me - which were promptly lost in my drawer many moons ago.

For this, I am a moron. For this, I now pay the price. I used to think it was just a simple visit by the bees at the end of the night; something easily repaired by a good night's sleep and the ability of youth to bounce back. I've always been pretty healthy. What I see now is the damage done. I used to have really sharp hearing. That sharpness is gone. If there are two sounds going on at the same time I often can't distinguish between them. Listening to music and talking to someone means I have to fill in the gaps of what I think they said, because it all sounds like mumble when you're far enough away. I have messed myself up good.

Wear earplugs while you still can."

tinnitus

is absolutely awful, and i have it all the time, not just after gigs. it can really stress you out if you aren't careful. er20s are the way to go :)

RNID

Have a good forum for anyone seeking advice about tinnitus.

just thought i'd add that. PROTECT YOUR EARS KIDS! you only get one hearing

Thats the weird thing

...and worrying thing.

I don't actually get any ringing. I just wake up with swelling, and watery liquid seeping.

I'm going to the music shops in town tomorrow to have a look, and pick some up. I live in the Netherlands, but I'm pretty sure that they'll have something similar (if not the same) as the ER20s.

yes i recommend

the er-20s as well. i bought a pair by a company called elacin, but they're good. i think it's some branch of etymotic.

bloody youthmovies

messed up my ears last year at the garage supporting forward russia. tinnitus ever since then..
but yeah, earplugs are definitely the way to go: http://www.dontlosethemusic.com/home/areyouatrisk/earplugs/where_to_buy/
Personally i think volume levels at clubs/gigs are getting ridiculous - obviously it should be loud! but there gets a point when it's just stupid and you can't even hear the music properly! Tis pretty irresponsible i think..

As many people have said

ER-20s are very good, and the foam ones from Boots work well too. I slightly damaged the hearing in my right ear when I saw the Bosstones and have worn earplugs at nearly every gig since.

Best off

getting foam ones in multipacks from sites like sensorcom, much better value as they don't last too long. You can get 50 for £4.50 etc. as opposed to 3 for £3 or something from boots.

tinnitus

is really crap. i also have that thing where it makes your inner ear sort've flinch and hurt if somebody knocks plates together or drops their fork or whatever. i'd recommend wearing earplugs for sure, especially at 'bad loud' kind of events (i'm sure you all know what i mean).

ER 20s...

...I reccomend ER 20s also, I have only recently started using them at band practise, as you can hear better with them in than you can with the foam ones, although I'm pretty sure the foam ones lower more decibels, although they are not so good for gigs and definitely not for singing.

I have only recently started worrying about my hearing after our drummer started telling me that we play a 130db at practise, which lasts about 4 hours which is very very bad.

I have horrible tinnitus already from being an ignornat teen, been going to shows (watching and playing, and a lot of heavy hardcore) since I was 15, so 7 years in total, I really wish I had looked after my ears better.

A lonley night lying in bed is made all the worse when there is a constant ringing.

LOOK AFTER YR EARS KIDZZZZ!!!!!11111ONEONEONE

I just...

...spent the afternoon wandering around my city, going from music shop to music shop, to audio specialists... all to no avail.

I came home, and did a search to find if I could locate anywhere in this country that sold what I'm looking for, and not only did I find a place, but I found a place that had the exact ones that everyone is raving about.

They cost me 21 quid delivered, but as I live in the Netherlands I knew that I'd have to pay a bit more.

Thanks for all the pointers all!

er15s and 20s

the drummer ones are ok for reg practicing and gigging but you do get a 'wooshy' or screaming sound as the igh freqs aren't cancelled our properly.

You should get some custom ones. The start at about £120

i got er20's

from ebay cheap enough, think it was about £12 inc delivery... and no, they weren't second hand.

My only issue is gettig into the habit of remembering to take them to gigs...

dont wear foam ear plugs.

they are designed to block out all sounds apart from conversation, and are designed for predominate use in industrial workplaces, which require you to not hear machinery but still hear your colleagues.

get the er20's, you can get them for a tenner from stringbusters. and they just drop all the levels a bit, so it takes the edge of the noise, but you can still hear all audible levels during a performance. i cant recommend them enough.

here you go

Question Time!!

My ER20s have arrived, hurrah.

The info is all in Dutch though, and I'm just curious on a couple of things.

How far are they supposed to stick out? They feel fully inserted, but the plastic bit does stick out quite a lot, and is very noticeable. Is that right?

Just tried putting them in and I've put on some music, and it sounds less muffled than I'd have imagined, so very happy right now :)

Depends on the size of your ears!

Mine stick out a bit but a mate fits his all the way in.

Are you pulling your ear open when putting them in?

If the info is all in dutch then this may not be clear - make sure you take off all the plastic bits before washing the rubber bit that goes in your ear ! Aparently water knackers the filter. The first time you do it it's quite hard to get the apart - they will come apart and go back together tho.

Apart from that just pop them in before the loud music starts and bob will be your uncle.

The plastic bits

on mine stick out a bit as well. They're probably noticeable, but I feel better for wearing them as I've built up quite a paranoia regarding my ears and loud gigs.

oh thanks.

I feel reassured. Here's hoping that I wake up on Monday with ears that still work!

I use 'Doc's Pro Plugs'

the vented ones cut out the harmful stuff whilst preserving sound quality, plus they don't make you fall over if you have naff ears like me.

You can pick 'em up at pretty much any music shop that sellls drum equipment for around a tenner. They're comfortable too!

Hope this helps

i do too

but i've noticed they do tend to muffle things a bit.

could that be because i've followed someone's advice and washed them under the tap?

i used to get

awful ear pains, now i don't but i have never worn plugs.

Hmm

this thread is making me buy some earplugs. I really should, I'm about to look into it now, your hearing is definitely something you don't want to mess up.

Do you find yourself

saying "pardon?" a lot?

UPDATE

I woke up on Monday feeling fine. The earplugs worked for me. Although I did feel a bit of a tit, as nobody else was wearing them. But I guess I will have to get over that, and in latter life rejoice in being able to listen to the television on volume 7, rather than 32 like my mother.

plugs

I found these ones which don't suffer from the muffle effect - you might look like a bit of a tool, but at least (like you say) I won't be using an ear horn in my 40's:

http://www.allearplugs.com/AEP37/High-Fidelity-Hear-Plugs-Earplugs-Large-(x1-pair).htm

Or

you could visit www.dontlosethemusic.com as they've got loads of info about protecting your hearing. Down with ear horns!

the Boots foam ones

are terrible. I honestly don't understand how you can get any enjoyment of a gig when wearing them. I tried using them once and it just felt a bit ridiculous, although they do protect your ears. ER20s are great, but take a bit of getting used to. Sometimes I think that if sound levels were more sensible or if venues had a better sound set-up then there wouldn't be any need for ear-plugs.

The foam ones

aren't really designed for listening to music to be fair. You need some like the ER20s which have a filter that takes down the volume level. They do take some getting used to, but it's better than murdering your hearing. I agree with you about the sound set up in some venues - then the sound engineers wouldn't need to crank everything up to 11.

sadly

there is still some social stigma about wearing plugs

wearing ear plugs is a really easy way of finding out who you want to hang out with.

reading this thread again

has reminded me that i need to get some earplugs.

probably these ER20s as they seem to be highly rated around here, but where did you guys get yours from? A shop? online? i can't find them on amazon (except one guy who is selling some but he only has 1 seller rating...)

social stigma?

in what way? As in people taking the piss because you're wearing earplugs? That's completely ridiculous. In an ideal world no one would need ear-plugs, but until then I reckon they should be actively encouraged.

just ordered

some er20s. the foam ones from boots etc are aweful - block to much sound out.

Listen to me if you can still hear...

ok my old band used to rehearse at silly volumes and now I have tinnitus. But to stem the flow and still be able to go to gigs and play music I got myself a professional pair of earplugs. They are not cheap but they have been invaluable at not only gigs, but loud bars and even on the tube (which reaches ear splitting volumes when the
rails screech near Bank).

These earplugs are comfy cos they are moulded to your ears, they also attenuate the sound so that instead of muffling, they just turn the volume down.

You can get them fitted in Harley Street for about £170. Bear in mind that I paid £150 or so back in about 2002 and am still using them (except I lost one and had it replaced for an extra £70 in that period). I use them all the time and they are great.

They are the pro ER 15 or ER 25 manufactured by Elacin who manufacture the cheaper ER 20 pre moulded cheap version. I would highley recommend the more expensive ones though as they are moulded to your own ear to a higher quality, and are also much less obvious. They also have high removable quality filters.

My problem was that I was totally ignorant to how you can damage your ears with loud music. Nowadays clubs and bars seem louder than ever. I have managed to cope with Tinnitus so far but it can seriously get on your nerves. I wish I had someone to tell me about this years ago, but now I am telling you. Get some earplugs! and if you love music you won't mind paying a bit extra for some good ones. If you get cheapo Boots ones you will just hear muffled music and want to take them out.

correction

for 'high removable quality filters ' read 'high quality removable filters'

You can get them everywhere

This was the first result I got from typing ER-20 into Google, and I'm fairly sure it's the site I used:

http://www.audiorelief.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=24&products_id=31&gclid=CMT28P-f148CFRMXQgodIx5tOg

These are great by the way - I've even taken to wearing them to clubs, it's amazing how clearly you can hear conversations around you.

cheers

i look forward to trying them out. i've had post-gig ear ringing for years now.

i think it was worst when i first started going to gigs and i suppose i wasn't used to it (plus the venue's sound was shit and always too loud) - i used to have ringing ears for a couple of days then!

i would add

that the ER 20s only provide 16 db of gain reduction. I would go for the ER 25s if you can afford it, for the reasons outlined above and for the extra protection.

thanks for the advice

i'll try these ones out and see how they feel i think

no probs

i also sometimes i carry a cheaper set of disposable earplugs in case anyone i go to a gig with wants to use them, you'd be surprised how many people are grateful for it

I use Pro Plugs

as I'm at so many gigs and in front of the PA half the time. So I value my hearing far more than being slagged off for wearing earplugs. I find I lose some of the highs but it's a price worth paying imo

ER 20's

Got mine a a while back off Audiorelief.co.uk as our band rehearsal was reaching a stupid volume. Yeah, they do cut the volume but I find they also cut out too much of the high frequencies, it all ends up a bit Bass & Drums with very little guitar (even after turning it up a fair bit). However, it's a small price to pay and something I'm willing to put up with...

I'll be wearing them for the first time at a gig this week... Nothing worse than laying in bed listening to yer ears ringing.....

etymotic er 20's in sheffeld

hey does anybody know where in sheffield i can find any etymotic er 20 ear plugs in sheffield.

I...

have just ordered some ER20's. Thought I better get some in before ATP EITS.
Anyway, does anybody know anything about ear phones, ie what kind is best for listening to iPods etc etc. I think I might need to get some better quality ones.

I got some ER-20s

Did a proper lol at the instructions. It says if you can't fit them in your ear then you need to "lubricate the flange".

£8.99 ER-20's

http://www.hearforlife.co.uk/products.php?ppid=1&limitno=0&cname=hi-fidelity%20musicians%20earplugs

They're the best affordable earplugs and this is the cheapest place I found them. They also do two sizes. I bought the smaller ones as they're better for girls ears.
100% worth getting.

i have mild tinnitus too

stops me getting to sleep, innit

get er-20s, the foam or disposable ones are lame. you lose like ALL the trebel and they're no fun!

get these ones here..

http://www.sensorcom.com/product.asp?P_ID=975&PT_ID=271

i find a lot better than ER20s, they actully fit in my ears and don't have the big sticky-out antennas so are a bit more discreet. also you can adjust them so you lose less treble.

Anyway i have all that stuff mentioned in this thread ^ 'the bees' the permanent ringing. i am a fucking idiot for not wearing them sooner than i did.

Really annoys me when people working in established music venues look at my friends blankly when asking if they have any earplugs to give out.

to be fair

they are probably staring blankly thinking "buy your own plugs, fool".

i go to gigs

on a weekly basis. and until fairly recently had genuinely had no idea it would fuck up my hearing for life. so a little awareness from people working in specialised music venues would be nice

even if it's just have a load of those chuck away foam ones behind the bar

pussys

gristle 70s,non,swans...mbv..only time i lost bloody hearing was the family cat.
