Brian May in DiS-hating shocker!

brian may

Aww, and Gareth always used to play at least one Queen song per DJ set...

Said band's guitarist, silly-haired old man Brian May, has criticised ace-o-rama DiS scribe Mr Gareth Dobson on his website.

It seems May, pictured in all his curly-topped beauty, didn't take too kindly to Dobson's review of the utterly, utterly shit Mika album, Life In Cartoon Motion. Read the review here.

Writes 59-year-old May on his site:

Good God ! Another nasty piece of work in Drowned In Sound. What is it about journalism which attracts the filthiest scum of the Earth? What decent person could write something so despicably and nonsensically insulting as calling someone a "diseased Leo Sayer"? I don't even want to get into the rest of this manifestly stupid article.

This young guy Mika is just starting out, and has, by his own talent and hard work, already caused a splash. Why do these pitiful writers feel the need to try to vilify him, and bring him down? By all means criticise the music, if you really think you know better than he does. But these personal insults tell us nothing about anyone, except the diseased, jealous brain of the writer.

I wonder what YOU look like, Gareth Dobson, you fabulous intellectual giant, you. You'd better be good looking, writing garbage like this. Even if you were, you would still be worthy of nothing but our contempt. Take my advice. Get a proper job. Make something of your own that gives pleasure to people; have the courage to put YOUR creativity on the line - and see what treatment YOU get from the 'critics' of the world. Meanwhile... shame on you.

Gareth looks hot, Brian. Thanks for asking.

  • Does Gareth look like Anita?

  • oh i forgot that gareth ALWAYS plays don't stop me down when he djs

    this has made my week

    • that's my favourite queen song.

      'don't stop me now'.

      • it's also

one of brian may's least favourite queen songs.

    • me too!

      never again Gareth!

  • this is amazing.

    dobson: hate figure

  • Brian May is a cock

  • i agree with him on some points

reviewers can get a bit personal and scathing and clever sometimes.

    • And so,

it would seem, can Brian May.

      • yeah

but i think it was completely deserved.

i dont like that mika guy, but seriously, the reviewer just shouldnt get personal, youre supposed to be reviewing the music, not slagging off the person who made it.
        call me old fashioned...!

    • Are but here's the thing

No one asks you to put yourself in the media spot-light.

That's the point. If you are putting "YOUR creativity on the line" don't be surprise if people don't like it, or you.

These idiots need/love press attention, and all too happy for people to write fawning bullshit in their support.

      • yeah but

honestly, opening with "looks like a diseased leo sayer" is pretty childish and cruel (though i'd be lying hugely if i said it didn't make me laugh). imagine if someone opened a review of the gossip album with something like "looks like lucy van pelt after a barrel of cream cheese has been pumped into her arsehole" or something. actually that'd be pretty funny too

      • but

im in a band. i wouldnt expect everyone to ike my music, and weve had a couple of people criticise our album.

but if some reviewer started laying into me or one of my band members, id be pretty upset to be honest.
        its just out of order.

        • loads of reviews

seem to do this, not just on drowned in sound, although its pretty evident both in the reviews and in the forums.

personally i reckon its a sign of a poor review unless it's genuinely witty.

on this case though, brian may vs mika, i couldnt give a toss

  • i think the important point we're missing here is

    brian 4 mika

    • Oh yeah.

I'm starting a petition round my college to remove that horrible Mika song from the college jukebox. I started it today and have already got 8 signitures so far

  • "diseased Leo Sayer"

    - I hadn't read that! Utterly, UTTERLY brilliant!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAA! Etc.

  • Go on Brian!

Ha, bless him. I like that he noticed. What do you reckon his screenname is?

  • That's brilliant

it certainly beats me getting abused by aggrieved Little Man Tate fans

    • just noticed thaT

he slags off Alexis Petridis too for daring to give Mika a crap review. Is he is dad or somefink?

  • I just picture

him poking with the end of that guitar:

"you fabulous intellectual giant, you eh...eh [pokepoke]... wonder what YOU look like [poke]"

    Best news story ever maybe.

    • I am Brian May

      And I hate you all.

    • I like that image

Do you reckon he attaches a biro to the end of his guitar so he can write with it too?

      • Crazy little thing called LOL

yes...that would be the bozz bozz...buttering his toast with it too, flora all over the frets

    • Isn't he missing the point a tad...

      as in... Mika is shite.

He's slated one of the Guardian reviewers as well...

"I have a picture in my head of Alexis Petridis, writer for the Guardian - shall I share it with you ? In my mind he looks like a nasty, grubby, spotty, unusually ignorant 15 year old creep, who is foolish enough to think he has one thousanth of the talent, or the courage, of someone like Mika, writing a facile piece of attempted artistic assassination, as if he's trying to prove he has teeth in a 6th form magazine."

Right... what's with the unhealthy obsession with imaging what people look like?

      • Petridis

        is brilliant n'all.

      • I get pleasure...

from reading scathing reviews that rinse people. So as far as I'm concerned Gareth Dobson has a proper job. I would insult Brian May, but he's a govenor at my old school, and used to go there, and how could I possibly insult another Hamptonian?

    • Ay

      thangu

  • Brian May certainly seems like a bit of a tool...

..but he's got some fair points here. It's all too easy for reviewers to resort to insults when writing a piece on something as un-indie as Mika. Furthermore, these insults are always only going to be one-way traffic - were Mika to get a lairy on, he'd clearly just be shot down as is happening to May in this instance. The moral of this story? 1: Try being a little more professional/objective when reviewing music you're not allowed to like. 2: Brian May should put a stop to the current 'Queen' album sessions.

    • Can we have a big reminder article about the Queen in South Africa

      during Apartheid thing now PLEASE

      • I mean

        Queen, not THE Queen

        • actually

it made sense as it was

          argh

          • YES

Every reference to Brian May from now on should begin "Apartheid-backing scumbag Brian May..."

    • Star Fleet

      What about that then Brian?

      • actually

that was pretty cool in an 80's way.

      • I thought...

...that was a cheese-induced hallucination. But yes Brian May thought it a good idea to do a cover version of a kiddies puppet show theme tune. And as for the hair and Anita Dobson...don't get me started.

In his defence, I hear he is an enthusiastic amateur astronomer -- as is Myleene Klass, who should present the Sky At Night when Patrick Moore dies, the boggle eyed old racist would love that.

  • It is a bit childish

how DIS seems to have decided Mika to be the hate figure of the moment, and how you're dropping in nasty comments on the site whenever possible. The best way to stop people having interest in or buying an artist's work (which is presumably the aim) is just to stop mentioning them - not to constantly bang on about them for comedy points. That just smacks of arrogance and some kind of weird ulterior motive.

It's sometimes worth remembering that, even if they're making truly awful music, musicians at any level are *real people*, and it can be genuinely hurtful if bileful hate is directed at you over and over again. I often see good, balanced reviews on here, as well as comments suggesting how constructive criticism is good instead of just saying "this is shit because I think it's shit". In this instance, no matter who it is aimed at, it's beginning to feel a bit too much.

    • but the review itself

seemed considered, sufficiently detailed, really...Although the personal attacks were a bit mean, it did give a good over-view non?

      • Yeah fair enough.

I just have these attacks of feeling sorry for the underdog at times. Give it half an hour and I'll be sounding off to somebody about how shit Gossip are, or something.

    • Yeah but Simon mate

      that would be BORING.

      • Mika is not

the underdog. He's got the full weight of a record label behind him.

In contrast the full weight of the entire DiS staff is probably only equvilent to that half a pallet of ALDI baked beans.

    • .

      gayer

      • You even bigger

        gayer fealey.

        I know where you live

  • bf

There is a lesson to be learned here.

Don't piss Brian May off, 'cos he'll open up a can of whoopass on you!

    I like Brian Mays guitar

  • actually

i heard Mika on the radio last week and he was covering Same Jeans in the style of Cornershop, which made me laugh.

you know what else is funny? Mister Diver has been slagging off Mika for all eternity, but it's Dobson who gets detention.. NAUGHTY GARETH.

    • Now it's official

that Brian May reads DiS, are we taking bets on which other neo-celebrities are avid readers of the site?
I reckon Sting and Michael Bolton may be making an appearance soon...

      • Note to May

If you're reading this, you better not read Stylus Magazine's review of the album

        • Note to May

OMG I LUV U UR LIKE A HERO TO ME I LUV QUEEN. p.s. mika sucks

      • STINNNNNGE!!!!!!!!

        Get me Sting!

        NOW!

    • Yes..

it's shit. But please...."diseased Leo Sayer"?? How old are you? Surely that's from page 1 of the school boy book of general insults! Closely followed by "You look like a demented [insert first thing that comes to mind here]"

      • Why don't you like me?

        WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME?
        WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME?!!!!

LA LA LA LA LA LA LA

It also sounds like a diseased Leo Sayer.

  • he did this

to alexis petridis from the guardian as well. i hope gareth slags him off back.

  • Brian's doorbell

I hope in my heart of hearts, that it makes the noise at 2m05 of this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCWW01N8ql4

    that'd be ace.

    • 2m06

      even

      • that is brilliant!

        i want a door-bell like that.

  • People I'd most like to punch square in the chops:

    1. Brian May
    2. Hazel Blears
    3. Mika

  • 'pissed off brian may'

would really be quite brilliant on your c.v.

    • .....

queen rule. mika is not good, but brian may is bang on.

  • DiS is now officially

    a great known place...

  • Brian will always be my god!

    <3

  • Brian May collaborated with 5ive

    That is all.

  • he's doing his Astrophysics Phd at my college

so i could find out where his room is if anyone wants to pay him a visit :)

i dont think he is around too much though :(

    • lolz

queen were shitter than mika will ever be.

      • hes got a point

reviews here are turning in to a
        i like x.
        or
i hate x. they are shit. at least be constructive. even on a tour sponsored by DIS they didnt bother reviewing the support acts other than to say. They were shit.

if that was the case (which it wasnt) then why did you book them to play on the tour? ahh ive had enough of tyhe close mindedness of this website.

        • thats a fair argument

but, Mika really is shit in this case, and the majority of other review sites are pretty much the same, they all say somethings good or its bad, otherwise i'td be no fun to read.

  • Awesome!

I wish Brian May would slag me off. I hate Mika too!

  • Anyone Else Amused By The Fact

That the rock star, Brian May, tells the journalist to get a proper job?

    • Brian May has millions

He can tell anyone he likes to get a proper job!

      • Why does he seem to be

        attacking the reviewers looks though?
What on Earth has that got to do with anything?

        • Why does he pick on Drowned in Sound?

'its you who sink struggling young artists' does he even know about the sort of acts we promoted.

          • * DiS promotes

            freudian slip.

            • This has

              made my day.

              • ^youve

made my day. yay sky larkin. boo Brian May.

  • well, the man makes a good point.

    DiS is shite...

except for that Mike Driver chap!

  • Who gives a shit

what brian may thinks about a DiS journo? May's launching a personal attack against a personal attack so he's perpetuating this vicious circle that can only end in dental torture. all in all, why can't we just get along and ignore May as the fuzzy haired has been he is and Mika as the pretty tallented purveyer of shite music?

    • An endorsement

from poodle-fucking fret-board wankers like him would be a deathnell old dobbo.
      more power to you.

(i also imagine DIS writers don't base their choice of partner on whether if, when drunk and a little myopic, it could seem like you're shagging yourself. The filthy perv).

      • he's more like the result of poodle-fucking

a weird symbiosis of man and pedigree bitch.

        • Mika is a

"peculiar combination of overbearing self-confidence and desperate neediness"

not my words, the words of Alexis Petridis

          • thats actually

bang on. He wants attention and tries to get it by any means necessary, even if it is by being crap.

          • that whole section

"Listening to Life in Cartoon Motion is like being held at gunpoint by Bonnie Langford. In both vocal style and the peculiar combination of overbearing self-confidence and desperate neediness that emanates from Grace Kelly's chorus of "Why don't you like me?" or from Love Today ("Everybody's going to love today ... you've got to love me!" he cries, while the oompah-disco backing goes all out to unite everybody in a desire to thump him), Penniman resembles Robbie Williams, albeit a Robbie Williams who has abandoned his array of knowing winks in the audience's direction and instead keeps frantically grinning and doing jazz hands every 30 seconds. "

            is spot-on

  • Can I just point out

that in that picture he is playing the National Anthem on top of Buckingham Palace. How many of YOU HATERZ have done that?

    Exactly.

    • Yeah

and im sure he's took the time to check this website more than once to justify his rant.

      • does it really take a 2nd look?

        i don't think so...

  • bf

I think I need to see a picture of Gareth Dobson

    is this him?

    http://election.su.ucalgary.ca/typo3temp/pics/e8b6a90c31.jpg

    A bit skinny, I feel

    • I think thats because of the picture size.

Personally i'm fairly proud of the fact that ive never taken part in a public propaganda spectacle for that waste-of-tax we call the royal family. If it was to raise money for the NHS then maybe i'd feel differently.

      • bf

        No shit, Sherlock!

      • brian may pissing on hendrix' legacy when he did that

Hendrix rocked on the Star Spangled Banner in a manner that sought to reclaim american identity from the conservative right that assumed they *were* America.

May took the style but not the substance or the talent and did some self-indulgent fret wanking in support of the establishment, the status quo and those lazy dole-scroungers we call the royal ramily.

Apartheid-supporting Brian May can kiss my skinny ass.

    • no

      that's not johnny americo enough.

  • but that Mika article gave me pleasure.

so shut up, May. you were irrelevant then. you are even more so now. get a haircut.

    • *gasp*

      • WOW!

Slagged off by BRIAN MAY! That's the coolest thing I've EVER HEARD. Gareth Dobson: you are a God.

        • Ugh

in reply to jesus' request earlier - http://arts.guardian.co.uk/fridayreview/story/0,,1389455,00.html
ahh... hypocritical diatribe. bless. jovial mocking of someone's appearance is one thing, disgusting political idiocy is another. especially when he seems to have a wierd visualisation-fetish..:S
to be honest, i have nothing wrong with Mika's appearance, as charicature as it may be. but its not music, nor is it even vaguely melodic. its the tortured, strangulated cries of an asthmatic cat simulatneously giving birth to triplets and being force-fed a rusty circular saw. why should gareth dobson not take offense at that??? fuck off brian may, he's just safeguarding the nation's eardrums.

          • ill force feed mika

a rusty circular saw. he might sound good then.

          • Seriously though..

you have a good point brewing there...
this is about free speech. If a journalist thinks an artist is crap he has every right to say so. People like Brian May cant just wade in there and say he cant express his opinions. All right, the appearance attacks were a little off hand. But DiS reviewed the album, for DiS readers, and said it wasnt good, Like they have every right to.

  • Are they, by any chance, related?

Bit dangerous slagging off another Dobson. The wife might not be too pleased.

    • again, ugh

i despair for the musical-state of the nation when a this excuse for music reigns supreme. weve always had collective shortcomings in terms of taste, but this is worse still.

      • ^hear hear

        • May's right

It's lazy journalism, and wasn't even funny. If you can't write about music properly then do something else. I'd slag it off in the Guardian, I'll slag it here too.

          • no

mays argument covers the appearance part..if you actually read the article youll see thats over by the end of the introduction.

The rest of the article focuses mainly on the album and the music contained therein. Its written with DiS-ers in mind, in the knowledge that they wont probably like Mika, and advises them away as such. I also happen to find it quite funny.

          • Did anyone read the review in Time Out?

            http://www.timeout.com/london/music/review/audio/705/mika_life_in_cartoon_motion.html

This one was pretty fair I thought, basically saying that Mika should signal the end of 'ironically' liking utter shit...

  • "Silly-haired old man"

Diver in TO BE KNIGHTED shocker.

    • if he doesnt like it

      he knows where to go

      hell

      • Its likely to happen

especially if Diver starts investigating cash for honours.

        • the rules

          1. music must come from the soul - mikas music clearly doesnt, and that is the divine rule often misread as indie-snobbery.

          2. brian may? - who cares? but bless him for caring.

          3. i want to know if the dis guy does look like bm says!

  • it's hard to take a man seriously

when he's had the same haircut for a quarter of a century.

    and shagged anita dobson.

  • it's funny how

from the words "Take my advice" onwards, Brian's advice is far more applicable to his own 'career'.. I wish that he'd go and decay in a ditch somewhere, rather than embarrasingly and disrespectfully dragging out the Queen cover versions (cos that's what they are now) any time someone at the BBC offers him a chance to get his vest out and "hit the stage one last time".

Oh yeah, there was that one time he played the National Anthem on top of the Palace too, though, wasn't there?

    I fucking hate Brian May.

    • Amazed he visits DiS!

I think he missed the point of music criticism.....was he hoping DiS would say 'well, we'll keep the fact we hate this album under our hats, because let's face it - he is a new artist just starting out after all, leave him alone!'. GD was spot on, the more people warned against buying this cr@ppy record company hyped turd the better. Well Done DiS. Taxi for May.

  • ...

on top of buckingham palace playing the national anthem? say no more...

  • I can't believe what a bunch of stupid, naive, silly little boy's you are!!!

Espically you Alex!!! My god you love the fact that your articulate (well done congratulation's!!) but you CLEARLY have alot of growing up to do!! You try, In vain, to argue point's about subjects, and In this case people, you know NOTHING ABOUT!!! If you do Insist on using your big words in hope of putting across a slightly interesting point of view, why don't you get some background knowledge (even alittle would be nice) oterwise keep your Ignorant, childish comment's to yourself because it really is getting boring now!! you resort to insults EVERY time you try to put a point of view across about things you know sod all about!!! Why don't you set up your own site in a kiddies corner somewhere so you can play with your big words!! you silly little boy!!!

    • has anyone read

      http://www.brianmay.com/brian/brianssb/brianssbfeb07.html

It seems that this Brian (whoever he may be) is a very defensive young man. He also seems to have serious anger management issues and basically comes across as a bit of an arse (and i know which bit).

      • Wow

Brian has ISSUES. With just about everything.

I loved Queen as a kid, but MAN does he need to chill out.

    • is this for real?

      er... 'Tracy'

My guess is that it's Gareth trying to stir a bit more interest in the article.

  • Leo...

No, Leo is it? (sorry if not), it is Tracy. I'm not usually that emotional?? (I don't know if that's the right word!! lol) but I've been reading this particular Guy's comments on a few pages and he got under my skin alittle. I should have taken the higher road I guess.

    • wot

that old clog wearing fart is still doing his bloody PhD???!!!!

      I suddendly feel younger again

      • he is

doing his PhD at my uni, Imperial College. Shows how much of an idiot he is to return to this shithole... he should've returned to somewhere that doesn't suck like your grandmother eating baby food.

        • I am

at KCL - can't wait for the face off then

  • leo

He say's he's not Gareth lol!!!

  • Go brian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I completely agree with Brian's comments. This sit needs to show some integrity
within its journalism by not launching hateful personal attacks towards musicians and artists, especially respected ones such as Brian.
Your 'silly-haired old man' comment is an unjustified response that proves exactly what Brian is talking about.

    • Go brian!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go and fall into a deep, deep hole and die there alone in a pool of your own reeking piss, for that would be an appropriate punishment for you

  • Oh the irony

of Brian May telling someone to make something of their own that gives pleasure to someone, coming from a man once in Queen! the only band i know who can cause as many suicide attempts in society as..well..Mika!

  • Dear Lord

There's too much to read to get involved...
But while BM is an incredible guitarist, composer and musician, he obviously believes that humour and music journalism should be mutually exclusive. One imagines that when it came to discussing the Frank Zappa adage 'Does Humour Belong In Music', p'raps Bri and Fred might have been on different sides of the debate?

    • .

"But while BM is an incredible guitarist, composer and musician"

What does BM stand for then?

  • Brian is right.

I think the album rocks personaly, and just pointlessly flaming the guy singing isn't really what music reviews are about. Unless you want to change the website to "Drowned in good looks"?

  • idiots

After reading this and the Mika review, I've come to the conclusion that this website is ridiculous in the least but mostly, juvenile. Making personal attacks that are both stupid & unwitty just seems so trite. Mikas album wasn't even that good, mostly the songs annoyed me but I liked maybe a few that were not released. Here's a tip you fuck-tards, try reviewing the MUSIC next time instead of making pathetic personal remarks. This article with it's defensive, playground prose just smacks of bitterness and idiocy. Because a crappy webzine is Oh So relevant.

    • after reading your post, i've come to the conclusion that

      LOL
