The Bluetones

I am going to risk ridicule here and proclaim my love of The Bluetones. 'Science and Nature' in particular is a great album.

Go on, slate me all you want. I love the Bluetones and I'm fucking proud of it.

  • I loved

them when i was 14 or so, saw them play live lots, got the t-shirt. But I haven't listened to them in years, I've kind of moved on in my tastes. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!...nearly.

  • they were my first ever gig

I only have their first album though, which is gold.

    • 'Can't

be trusted' was a good one.

      • *Carn't

Don't know why but I'm sure that's how they spelt it.

Maybe it was a britpop thing?

        • It was spelt like that (carn't)

          I haven't the foggiest.

          • I'm think they're

playing in Preston soon. I may go with a placard asking them why.

          • they had

a superfluous r on a number of tracks

            carn't be trusted
            broken starr
            zorrro

  • I am with you 100%

I have all there stuff. New album out now! Can I just say . . . Slack Jaw!

    • They have a bbc sessions album out soon as well.

      • I know

very excited! Putting out Fires was MY song when I was a teenager. So many memories associated to the Bluetones.

    • Slack jaw is superb!

Aside from Luxembourg, they're albums are fab!

  • bluetones

love is more or less universal. they're the steed malbranque of music :P

    • I shall let you off that one

  • Marblehead Johnson

    = 14 year old's anthem. Good mamories.

  • Don't Stand Me Down = AMAZING

Seriously, I love the Bluetones so much. I've seen them about seven times, or something stupid like that. But not recently. Maybe I should go to a 'nu-bluetones' show.

    • they are touring soon...

including KOKO in Camden. I am going. I suggest everyone else joins me.

    • I think I've seen them

about 14 times. Always so much fun.

  • YES!! I've recently rediscovered my love for them

I got Expecting to Fly in a charidee shop the other day and i can't stop listening to it.

I've been resisting the urge to post about how much i love Cut Some Rug.

    • Its always in charity shops...

yet it is a great album!

    • I love it when the plane starts up

and the music quietly kicks in, and I get magically transported back to the way I felt as a hormone fuelled 13 year old.

      • I prefer the Start of Science and Nature

ah Zorro, you never fail to cheer me up.

        • How good

          is Blood Bubble live?

          • How good

            are the Bluetones live?!

            • The most goodest

              EVER.

You've gotta love Mark's little dances too.

              • And his between song banter

                is priceless.

              • speaking of Mark

have you ever seen Fi Lo Beddow?

He keeps playing Soton/Winchester but I've never been able to convince anyone to go.

                • I've never had the pleasure

                  but I keep meaning to.

                • He never played Winch

Soton when I was there. Why oh why did I leave? I have heard Fi Lo, check his myspace.

                  • I think he's played round here 3 times

                    in the last year.

Bluetones are playing the Brook (i think) soon, but it clashes with Aereogramme at t'Joiners...I really am in a dilemma about which one to go to.

                    • They're playing

next week on the 7th at the Brook. I have to work, or I would have made the journey.

                    • Thats tough...

                      but I'd say the Bluetones.

                      • do you think they'll only play new stuff

I only really know the first 2 albums

                        • They mix it up a bit

                          they ALWAYS do

                          Slight Return
                          Cut Some Rug
                          If

                          • interesting, very interesting

Plus, I'm more likely to be able to convince friends to go to Bluetones than Aereogramme

  • I also love The Bluetones

You will get no ridicule from me. I think somehow I've managed to see them seven or eight times.

    • I think they

are the band I've seen most in my life. I think I have seen them at least 11 times now.

      • brilliant band

still debating whether to see them on Monday.

  • And to think I was expecting abuse!!

Its nice to see other Bluetones fans!!

  • I like The Bluetones a great deal

A lot of bands that emerged around that time disappeared because life isn't fair. A lot disappeared because they were rubbish. That this one survives, albeit in slightly reduced circumstances, gives me some hope for the human race...

But if anyone talks about 'relevance' in an NME stylee, well. Their first album came out a year after the first Oasis album. Unlike Oasis, the quality has remained consistent - if you liked their old albums, you should like their more recent ones, whereas Oasis have gone downhill artistically since the beginning. So why do we continue to read about Oasis all the time?

I don't want the music press to become a nostalgia fest but equally I get fed up of them telling us what's still worth listening to, and by implication of not talking about others, what isn't.

    • Of course

Equally if you didn't like them then, you won't like them now. But you catch my point.

  • Yep

    I like The Bluetones too.

HOWEVER today I have listened to Olympian by Gene twice. What a great album. Does this deserve it's own thread?

    • Gene thread please.

It saves me the embarrassment of starting one myself.

Also, I'm rediscovering the joys of Silver Sun. Their first three albums are bloody fantastic (though I'm not sure about Dad's Weird Dream...). Garlic, off Disappear Here, may be the best thing they ever did.

If I spy a cheap copy of Expecting To Fly while REKKIDSHOPPIN' tomorrow, I shall get it, fo shiz.

  • i like them

not thought much of them post Science And Nature though.

    • I've only heard one album by them...

...their self-titled lp that was released last year. Loved it, a great pop record. I am compelled to hear more by them.

      • i loved the bluetones

and i still buy all of their albums / eps out of some bizarrre loyalty in the hope that they will will hit the heights of expecting to fly / return to the last chance saloon / early b-sides but always end up a bit disappointed really other than the odd gem here or there...

still a great live band though and i must've seen them over 10 times now (not sure whether to be embarrassed or proud of that)

    • I think one of their best

songs was Never Going Nowhere, post Science and Nature. They are consistently fab!

      • bluetones

are a nice band. saw them when they started out supporting everyone..decent lads indeed..

        • anyone remember...

when they were slated for being racist? they actually did a Jade Goody. Steve Wells(Swells)of NME, ripped them apart over it, their Career very nearly suffered...perhaps we are less tolerant now than we were then.

I SAY sexism should be treated as seriously as racism.
