Damn! This record's broken, and certainly not in the Roy Castle sense. It just keeps repeating itself. Distorted drop-D chugga-chugga riff, dude yelling about alcohol in a sub 'Design for Life manner, dude shouting about his mother...
Damn! My mistake! How stupid do *I* look? It's actually just a really one dimensional record by unambitious post-grunge three piece Reuben.

Gone are their early days, those halcyon times of constant tippings as "next medium-sized thing", days of dumb, catchy, heartfelt crunch-pop wundertunes like 'Scared of the Police' and 'Let's Stop Hanging Out' and in its place is this. It's certainly dumb and crunchy, occasionally catchy and arguably heartfelt, but, and this is a big but, it’s just not nearly as good. Of the 13 tracks here (at 50 minutes, it's hardly "Very Fast" and the only "Danger" is of frustrated boredom), ten are near indistinguishable Helmet rip-offs (the band admit as much in the lyrics to 'Return of the Jedi'), two are low rent Foo Fighting ballads and one is the narrow-mindedly-titled 'Every time a Teenager Listens to Drum & Bass a Rockstar Dies', a failed attempt at broadening the album's horizons with a drum machine.

Of the up-tempo numbers, current single 'Keep it to Yourself' is sweet like (Mud)honey and shows that they aren't all that bad, as do a few other nifty riffs and the string coda to 'Nobody Loves You Like I Do'. In fact, they're still fun live - wheeling out the oldies for a little nostalgic pogo - but their entertainment value is mainly thanks to frontman Jamie Lenman's immense affability, a charm almost entirely lacking from this record.

When 'Return of the Jedi' complains about having to quit the band and get a real job, given this album’s workmanlike nature, you’d be hard-pressed to see a difference.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

Love Reuben, but i too am dissappointed with this record. The debut was fantastic, but the new songs simply do not match up.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

'Nobody loves you' is a charming little ditty however.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

dudes peaked with Scared of the Police

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

I actually like the album, been listening to it for a while and my LEAST fave is 'nobody loves you', I can't stand it, to me it's a vein attempt to sell-out and it just doesn't suit em.

I think songs like Lights Out, Alpha signal Three and Good Night are great songs. As are the 3 singles they released.

Sometimes I think some people expect too much from Reuben. If I wanna rock hard, and sing along, I put on Reuben, either album, end of story.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

stupid fucking review

your totally missing the point of reuben. Its fun

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

ROFL HARRIS

But he really isnt missing the point. This album is trying too hard and frankly fails. Other reviews say so too...try www.joyzine.co.uk and other such sources

But to say this review is stupid belittles the efforts the author had to go through by actually listening to this turgid rock thing.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

effort listening to reuben

now ive heard it all

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

no. youre missing the point of the review.
their old tunes were "fun"
theyre still "fun" live
occassionally songs on this record are a little fun (eg keep it to yourself)
all of which is in the review.
but most of the record simply ISNT fun.
them whining about having to quit making records, them using shit drum machines, them doing lame ballads
NOT
FUN.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

I've seen other reviews and they like the album so I guess it's another one of those love/hate bands

I agree with zombie crew, it's fun. I love sing along vocals and chugging riffs

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

What reveiws? The Fly tore it apart called it "painfull" to listen to. Lou Vale is quoted as calling it "A sell out joke".

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

this album is totally laclustre compared to 'racecar...' that album was strong, this one.... not so.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

well i don't care what you think i think this is a great little record with good tunes, charming lyrics and a sense of charisma that half of the bands DiS is currently humping the legs of never even came close to pocessing

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

This is a very poor album and despite Reuben pushing all on their mailing list to buy it far too much it has not done well. I for one am totally fed up with their moaning about being overlooked , there is just better stuff out there.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

I always thought that too. Hmmm.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

surely the loops at the beginning of 'every time a teenager listens to drum....' are tongue in cheek no?

Maybe that's the point of that song, shitty loops and bullshit sounds, fuck this, lets rock you cunts!

Coz if you notice, the loops don't return in the song

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

considerng that they cite aphex twin as an influence on this ere site, and how much effort there is on the production, its not just a little hrowaway joke. either way it sucks.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

I saw them live in Brum the other week and the new material just just doesnt stand up as well the first lp. It's a fair effort tho but Disappointing. Hope they start writing more material again :P

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

I saw Michael Diver AND Jamie Lenman standing next to each other last night. LOL!!!

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

I don't understand why Reuben get such a hard time in the music press. They write really great, catchy songs and are a lot of fun. They never take themselves too seriously and that includes the new album. The lyrics are always smart and tongue in cheek but no one ever mentions them.

I just feel that most reviewers automatically want to dislike them before they have even heard it, purely for credibility value. This review isn't TOO bad and I think the points are actually genuine but still misses the point. Of course that drum loop at the start of 'Everytime....' is ironic, they're not trying to be Fear Factory or anything!

Also, I don't see how the argument that 'well, other reviews have slagged it off too, just look at these...blah blah blah'' is a valid one. Do you expect people to change their views??

-I really like the new Reuben album
-Oh you don't do you? It's shit!
-Yeah I think it's really good
-But look! The Fly said it was crap!
-Oh yeah you're right. Sorry about that.

Fucking stupid isn't it!!

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

for what it might be worth...

Racecar... was my undoubted album of last summer. I know at least 3 DiS scribes who wholeheartedly agree.

This album just doesn't cut the mustard. We thought it was cos Jamie Lenman was really busy being Deputy Editor of DrownedinSound.Raz but it wasn't

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

this band is fuckin amazing if u ask me... they should be huge.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

Reuben are a great band and a really nice bunch of guys, but I don't think they'll ever be huge. A lot of people have already dismissed them, but I don't think they've peaked, they're about 21 for fuck's sake! They have their whole career ahead of them. I think this album has some great tunes, but overall it's not amazing. They have been given a hard time over it, and I think it has been criticised quite harshly. 2 stars? Come on, it's worth 3! I look forward to what they have to offer next, I hope they take their time and produce something really great, cos I know they have it in them.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

They are 24 ish and have been going for 7 years at least that is hardly at the start of their career. The last live shoes were lackluster to say the least.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

They aren't 24ish, a mate of mine went to school with Jamie and Jon, he's 21, Jamie is at most 22. I know they've been going for ages, before they were Reuben, they were Angel, before they were Angel they were Vodka Lilly. But when they were Vodka Lilly they were about 13 and Jamie's voice hadn't even broken, I've heard a tape, it was most amusing.

My point is, they are a good band, I've seen them live 7 times and they've never disappointed me. This is only their second album, that's what I mean by the start of their career, sure, it's not a great album, but so many people are writing them off already, give them a chance! The first album was basically a collection of old songs, this one is the difficult second album. I'm eagerly awaiting the third.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

This is silly arguing about the age of the band however if you read the bands site you will see they are 24ish.It looks like Jon is 24 on new years day!I have seen Reuben many times and they have disappointed me in the last year or so that doesnt mean they always will but this album is a downer for me.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

i disagree with this guy, i think this is better than the 1st album, its much more consistant.

I also hate it when nobody reviewer on an internet try to be Simon Cowell.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

gosh.

it's not quite "once i killer a man"...

but it's definitely playing from the same rulebook.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

once i cookered dinner for this new Simon Cowell man

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

2 stars is a bit harsh. It's dissapointing but its still a good album. Apart from "Nobody Loves You".

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

The new album is aweful! There's no denying that.

Well...

Your spelling is awful.

Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

I find it strange that some people loved the first album and don't rate the second one - I actually think it's as good if not better (bar 'Nobody Loves You' of course). Then again I am a Helmet fan (oo-er missus, etc)

I agree!

'Cept about Nobody Loves You, it's grand.

Re: Reuben - Very Fast Very Dangerous

One of the best albums of 2005.

Obviously this album was given a once over, and CJ Alcock decided to give it an opinion. You sir, are a penis.

I listened to it once and thought, this... isn't that good. Went back the next day and listened to it. Ended up listening to it about 6 times. Because It is so god damn good!

Theres so many good songs on this album! 'It's All About Control', 'Blamethrower', 'Lights Out'. I picked them at random and all get 10 out of 10 from me!

And as for comparing it with Racecar? Not really something you can do. Its done in a completely different way.

And whats with this 'Nobody Loves You' hating? Its a fantastic song. Obviously not their best but still great!

yes

i am a penis
for writing a review.

have a biscuit.

Yes

You are a penis.

T.F.T.D.

Give it up. It was a poor album best forgotten.

Never

I enjoy it more and more with every listen.

It's ok

But it just ain't racecar... Tenner says Jamie gives it all up for caretaker in the not too
distant future
