Elvis refuses to reimburse fans after Champions League delay

Elvis Costello has refused to cough up any compensation for fans left waiting for the singer for two hours at a gig last week. Costello was late for his headline performance at the University of East Anglia on Wednesday 25 May as he'd been watching Liverpool - the team he supports - win the Champions League. Fans booed him when he finally took the stage, and some left after Costello reportedly reacted with swear words.
Ticket holders that left early were hoping for some reimbursement, but Costello ruled that out, saying: "Those who've asked for their money back should stay at home reading their cookbooks over a nice cup of Horlicks, while listening to their K-Tel collection of Punk Rock classics."

fromone liverpool fan to the other I was booked to play a gig that night and it coincided with extra time thankfully and finised in time for the penalties - needless to say no-one was watching us!-

Wasn't basically the same story going around about Starsailor's gig on the day too? Although no-one much seemed to be complaining when Oasis did the same, maybe because they were the only ones to show the match on a screen there. -

Sorry, but no... i do not agree with anybody who thinks what EC was ok, or funny!
I don't think a refund should have been offered no, but an apology would have been in order. He showed a total lack of fucking respect for his own fans. I hope those sams fans shun him in the future, its the least he deserves for that outrageous statement!

yeah but i sure a good number of fans might have had to catch a last train etc home, and I think that they have a right to at least ask for their money back. He knew it was the final that day so if he wanted to see it that much he could have rescheduled well in advance or done something like that! -

I think it's a bit of a cheek, you'd think he could have at least let them announce that there'd be a late start, or re-scheduled the gig when he found out Liverpool were in the final.
I do find it weird though, when people go on about the "last train" Why go to a gig and miss the last 4/5 songs as a lot of people do? You can't really complain in that situation. If you want to go to a gig, make sure you can go to it, otherwise you'll just sit there worrying about missing the train all night and you won't enjoy it. I know not everyone lives in London and can get night buses back home at whatever time they want, but it's just strange. Even if it was a band I really liked, I'm not sure I'd want to go if I knew I was gonna miss the end.-

oh yeh, i think costello is a cunt for doing that. you do not pay £25 for a 30 minute set(which is what happened), if he didn't wanna play he should have cancelled. -

but this gig was in norwich, so i doubt anyone was rushing to get the train... the station is miles away. -

the problem was he came on really late but still finished on time, thus only playing for about 30 mins... which for about £25 is a right rip-off.
he still wants to use the old 'punk' attuitude when it suits him but he's not charging £1.50 a ticket anymore is he.

I found this disgraceful. No doubt millions of people in this country missed the game to do their JOBS, and so should he have done. If any of those millions would have not turned up, and reacted in the way he did, then they would have been sacked.
I like him a lot. Oliver's Army and all that. But this has made me rethink any respect I give him. -

As someone who doesn't live within walking distance of any venues, I can appreciate the need for a timely and concise performance....there's nothing worse than having to leave early cos you're going to miss the last bloody train from london (which seems to turn into a slow moving bus two out of three times anyway)......I wanted to see a back in twickenham, but would have had to leave at 9.30 thanks to the shitness of the public transport in this Cuntry......-

'a timely and concise performance'. this reads like alan partridge kicking off. elvis costello clearly cared a great deal about the other important thing in his life, which is liverpool fc. oasis did exactly the same thing that night, and they support Manchester City. refusing to come out until after penalties, they then took the stage and sang 'you'll never walk alone' with the fans, who seemed in a pretty good mood and willing to go along with it all. deal with it. suppose you whinge when a performer's had a drink before playing as well, do you?you grumpy old bastards. -

Did it ever occur to you that maybe people want to see the bands they like so much that they're prepared to only see half the set, but would prefer (if trains ran a bit later) to see the whole set. I mean for fucks sake, you seem to be suggesting that you should only go to a gig if you can see the whole thing. For a lot of people that would mean not going to any gigs. -

this is bad of him like, thankfully when he was playing in Newcastle he was spot on and played for about 2 hours non stop and it was excellent!
