Morrissey: Let Me Kiss You

  • Type: Single
  • Release date: 11/10/2004
  • Label: Sanctuary

A nifty touch of dualism from the comeback man of the year: ‘love the aesthetic of me / love the warm heart I possess’ – he just can’t decide, the poor man. What would have happened if Stephen Patrick was born ugly, eh?

Certainly this musical cousin of ‘The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get’ ticks all the boxes; that trademark Moz vocal sigh, the sweeping balladry, the arch, almost subversive lyricism – it’s all there. So why are we so unmoved?

Perhaps after the triumphant highs of his returning singles, gigs and album, this just falls a little flat. It’s not classic Morrissey, like ‘Last Of The Gang To Die’, it’s more solid, mid-period Morrissey, and after the standards he’s set recently, it just won’t do.

Point noted, not the best choice, I would have preferred to hear 'I have forgiven Jesus' or even 'The World is full of Crashing Bores' as this single, but then I suppose it's a case of consolodating (sp?) his postion this year and mid-period Morrissey is still as good as most things out there. Oh and by the way, it's called 'First of the Gang to Die', but I won't get all Morrissey obsessive on you. Well, just yet anyway.

It's one of the standout tracks from the album, so i'm not suprised it's a single. My wife thinks it's the best of the bunch just for the line "Think of somebody you physically admire and kiss me" (roughly). That is a pretty good line, I must admit. Still, my fave is Come Back To Camden. But I'm getting a bit bored of all the people slating Moz for being less good than he used to be, when a lot of his output is still better than 90% of bands.

    Morrissey: "Let me kiss you."
Me: "No thanks, you crusty, egotistical whinger..."
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

    utter utter shite
  • Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

Why don't Morrissey, Johnny Lydon and Bono just fucking piss off like they should of done 20 years ago when they were actually decent and people my age listened to them, Proof? "My wife thinks it's the best of the bunch".

I just hope I'm not listening to doherty's solo singles in 20 years and reliving the glory days of the libs, Then I will know I am an old fogy
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

    what glory days?
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

Thank you for your ageist comments. I hope people treat you the same in ten years time. you cunt. What next? Wanna have a go at my skin colour?
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

Okay. Thanks for putting us all straight. Music is just for the young. I thought it was for everyone. I see the error of my ways. As a 32 year old wife and mother, I should know my place. I'll just get my slippers on and settle down to watch Richard and Judy.

I love Morrissey's new album. The lyrics are as good as ever and the sound is fantastic. His Manchester gig was flawless. Of course, with his receding hairline and slight middle aged chubbiness, he should have been banned from making music. We all know that only the young have the right to make music or listen to it.

What makes me sad is that you probably thought your comments were funny and insightful. They were in fact out and out bigotry and no better than racist or sexist slurs.

Rant over. I'll just get back to scrubbing the floors and making dinner like a good little wifie. Hmmm.

....do I even need to say anything?
  • Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

morrisey's still got it. if he didn't he wouldn't still be able to sell gigs out as fast as he does. and i've been to 2 off the latest tour and there were probably an equal portion of people under 30 than there were over 30.

But what are the b-sides like? There usually pretty good, and thats the only reason i'd buy the single.

Ageism the same as Racism? Thats a bit silly now isn't it. The plain truth is Morrissey is a brilliant song writer he's shown that with 'Sheila take a bow', 'What difference does it make' and 'Ask' but has he even come close to those songs since the smiths split so whats the point? My main point (that you all missed) was no matter what your age you can still follow what the smiths legacy has influenced (Bloc Party, the Departure, the Libertines) which is new music. In twenty years time I hope I'm listening to bands that the libertines and interpol have influenced and not Doherty's shit single stuff, pretending that it's as good as the libs.

P.S (Im not saying that all old music is shit, just people like morrissey living off old glorys)
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

As an old fart who loved The Smiths and hated the majority of Morrissey's solo career (last saw him in '99 play to a half empty university hall) i'd say his new album is the best solo one he's made.

For me 'You Are The Quarry' comes close to many Smiths tracks in quality and i'm pleased he got the chance to make it. Much better than any of those fake bands you mentioned (The Departure.... I mean! They're really, really terrible).

If this album had flopped you'd all be saying it's a classic.

Oh yeh, ageism is rife in our society... with age comes knowledge and that's what young people lack. Not that the ageism debate has anything to do with this thread... but I thought i'd add my tuppence worth.
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

"The departure, I mean they're really really terrible"

If Oldies like you and my dad liked the libs and departure then i wouldn't listen to it, Your probally from the same generation of 'dad's that hated the clash and the sex pistols making the young generation cling onto them even more.

Like all good rockin roll you hate it and we love it (we being the x generation)
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

couldnt give a toss about morrisey, but on the agism front i love all the stuff my dad likes
    led zep, deep purple etc.

off topic but i thought id have my say
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

'Don't make fun of Daddy's voice' is a glam Moz stomp,
    and it's cracking.
Some b-sides off this record have been brilliant.
'The never played symphonies' and 'Mexico' are worth having.
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

Your dad sounds like mine. Does he like Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Super Tramp and Rainbow?

    It's such 'Dad' music.
  • Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

"If Oldies like you and my dad liked the libs and departure then i wouldn't listen to it"

I dont hate this comment, im not going to judge this comment like alot of other people would on here, but i do feel sorry for you, i really do. So, any music that your parents listen to is "old" music, is "dads" music so you dont like it, instantly? Isnt it possiblt maybe to give it a listen and judge it on its own merit instead of judging on when it was recorded and the type of people who, on average, listen to it?

And for a previous comment, i must agree that saying "im not gonna listen to your music or like what you like because you're old" is just as pathetic outlook on life as "im not gonna listen to your music cos you're black", in my opinion.

Ive just say turned twenty and just because my folks, and others of a older generation listen to Morrissey, Led Zep, Tim Buckley, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, The Beatles etc etc doesnt mean it isnt all music I've come to respect and love. A good album written 20, 30 years ago is still a good album today, in most cases, music does date but you can't judge it to be shit in the modern day just because of the way it sounded when it was recorded in the 60's, technology has progressed, you know? And who else do you expect to have listened to Pink Floyd and whoever when they were around? We werent, all we can do is catch up, and if someone my age refuses to do that just on an age factor i really dont understand the logic in that, all of them, including yourself are missing out. If you're into the Departure and The libs or whoever else, i dont see why you shouldnt still feel you could listen to them in ten and twenty years time.

  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

It's not that I don't like it because it's old and my dad likes it, It's because it's shit. My dad and other oldies liking it is a by product of that shitness. Just like morrisseys shitness.

P.S At no point have a slagged off old music, If anything I have praised the Smiths on this post while berating Morrisseys solo stuff. What I have slagged off is Dad's music which embarrases and annoys in equal measure (For instance the Darkness are liked by my Dad, they are new and not old but are equally as shit)
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

it might be 'dad' music but it rocks harder than any bands around today
  • Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

You think your so clever when all you have done is spouted a load of bullshit. I am not that much of a prick so i will put it simply for you:

    Morrissey = was good
    Morrissey = now shit
  • Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

Generally, all the old bands my dad likes are good, but all the new bands he likes sound like pale copies of those bands. Same way that Moz sounds like a bad copy of the smiths.

I don't think old people should be allowed on the internet because they miss the point and get arsey.

    x
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

You don't think "old people" should be allowed on the net? You 're so fucking stupid it's scary. Think you'll be young forever do you? I suppose when you get to be what you consider to be "old" you will be the only exception. I wouldn't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to title a story about your life, "My Struggle"

    Heil!

P.S. "pale copies of those old bands" ... sort of like Interpol?
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

Because genius... They're musicians. That happens to be what they do for a living. Do you really need someone to claify that fact. when you become 30 or 35 or whenevr you think is too long for these guys to still be 'round, I would like somone to ask you to retire and sit 'round colecting dust for the rest of your life.
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

Do yourself a favour and just shut the fuck up. With every new "clairifying" post you only sound more & more stupid. Unreal!
  • Re: Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

    did you see that?

it was the joke, and preceding sense of humour, pass you by completely
  • Morrissey - Let Me Kiss You

i think this J guy just follows me around DiS missing the point of everything i post, thus proving the point i didn't make.

as a rule of thumb, dickhead, if it looks too stupid to be a real opinion then it probably isn't.
